Her sister Jessie married Jack's brother George. After Jack died, Mattie later married her landlord, late in life, Reuben Sparbier after his wife passed away. She lived in Herkimer, New York. The photograph taken in 1930 of the Harvey family reunion was taken at Mattie's house. It was taken by Harvey Raymond Bassett, who was a photographer with the Associated Screen News Agency in Montreal. Mattie and Grandma Harvey (Amney Bishop) lived in this house together as widows. Bass (Picture included) William Marvin Bass III (born August 30, 1928) is an American forensic anthropologist, best known for his research on human ostelology and human decomposition. He has also assisted federal, local, and non-U.S. authorities in the identification of human remains. He taught at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and though currently retired from teaching, still plays an active research role at the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility, which he founded. The Facility is more popularly known as ?The Body Farm?, a name used by crime author Patricia Cornwell in a novel of the same name, which drew inspiration from Bass and his work. Bass has also described the body farm as "Death's Acre" ? the title of the book on his life and career, co-written with journalist Jon Jefferson. Jefferson and Bass, under the pen name "Jefferson Bass", have also written several fictional works: Carved In Bone, Flesh and Bone, The Devil's Bones, Bones of Betrayal, The Bone Thief, The Bone Yard, The Inquisitor's Key, Cut To the Bone, and The Breaking Point. Bass is the third generation in his family to have an educational building named after him. The Dr. William M. Bassett, was born in Washington, Connecticut, October 24, 1829; died at the home of his son at Wilbur, Washington, February 4th, 1901, in his 72nd year. He and two sisters were left orphans when he reached the age of 13 years. He received a good common school education and then learned the carpenter and joiners' trade, after which he served an apprenticeship of three years at ship carpentering. Being possessed of the natural American instinct for pioneering, he turned his face to the Pacific early in life, having traversed the continent twice by water, around Cape Horn and three times via Isthmus of Panama by boat and by rail. Much of his life in the west was devoted to mining and he ammassed a total, at different times, of $10,000 to $12,000, but it was all dissipated in a continued search for the hidden treasure. After several years of western life he determined to settle down to the quiet life of the older states, and in pursuance of that resolve, returned to Washington City, where an uncle, then in Congress, promised to obtain for him, a goverment situation. On December 31st, 1867, he married Adelia Lenora Lewis, bought a farm eight miles from Washington City in Fairfax county, Virginia and there he sojourned one year, but the appointment failing him, he once more became restless with the western fever, and came to Portland, Oregon, where he worked at his trade during the summer. He then returned to his Virginia home, sold his farm and brought his family to the Pacific coast. He soon drifted north to Spokane, which was then little more than an Indian village. There, in the employ of Downing and Scranton, he "framed" the timbers for the first sawmill built at the Falls. Early in the spring of 1871 he located a claim on land midway between Medical Lake and Cheney in what was then known as the "Four Lakes" country. To three of these lakes, Mr. Bassett gave the names of Granite, Silver and Clear Lakes. In those pioneer days, all who lived within fifteen miles were near neighbors, and Walla Walla, over 100 miles away, was the base of supplies. There he lived until 1887, and during the time of his residence on the farm, the Northern Pacific Railway was built, passing only four and one-half miles away, and he saw settlements spring up as if by magic. After the death of his wife in 1887, he sold his farm and taking his daughter, Bertha, then a little girl, he went to Grangeville, Idaho, and from that time on, the greater part of his life was spent in the mountains of Idaho, where he lived the life of a prospector, though his relatives believe that during his latter years he sojourned among the mountains more to be nearer the heart of nature than for any hope of uncovering Earth's riches. This love of nature's dwelling places is set forth in the following verses, selected from many which he penned during the days of his solitary life: I love the woods, the shady wood, Where nature in her moods, Takes me within her sympathy, And shares with me her goods. The pheasant, grouse and mountain trout, She spares me for my fare - - The fragrance of the evergreen With balmy mountain air. When troubles vex and cares abound, And when my soul needs rest, I know the mountain air, for me, Is ever yet the best. With water pure, from mountain snows To quench my parching thirst - - With living green, the landscape o'er, Upon my sigh doth burst. With all these objects in my view, Companions while awake, My thoughts, they drift from worldly cares, And other courses take. Joe was born on September 20, 1932 in Ivan, Louisiana to James and Hattie Bass. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Barbara Arthur on November 7, 1953 in Palo Pinto County, Texas. He played Bluegrass, Country, and Gospel music and was the lead singer for The Double Mountain Boys since their beginning in 1960. They played all over Texas including the first Mayfest in Fort Worth and made many friends along the way. He loved watching the Lipan Indians and the Lady Indians play basketball and he especially loved his family. He was a member of Lipan First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters. He was 70 years old. The son of Vera Agnes Scheffel and Wilfred George "Bill" Bassett, George was born on January 13, 1942 and raised in Jackson, Michigan. George was a graduate of Jackson High School (1960), the University of Michigan (1966) and University of Michigan Law School (1969). George and his wife, Edwina Jean Woszczak were married in 1966 and moved to Washington state in 1969. George was a 42 year member of the WA State Bar Association. He authored and was editor-in-chief for the Washington Civil Trial and Evidence Manual, From Voir Dire to Verdict, first published in 1978. He was a founding member of the Bassett & Morrison law firm, and a shareholder this past 20 years at Graham & Dunn PC, Seattle. A long time resident of Mercer Island, a member of Mercer Island Presbyterian Church for the last 35 years, and a resident of Issaquah for the past seven years, George will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father & grandfather, as well as a friend and mentor to many in the communities in which he worked and lived. George is survived by his wife, Edwina Bassett of Issaquah WA, his children Emily J. Snyder (Eric), Vanessa J. Bassett, John E. Bassett (Brandy) of Sammamish WA, and four grandchildren, Melia, Jayna, Olivia Snyder, and Georgia Bassett. Additionally, he is survived by his brother, Leland K. Bassett (Tina) of Detroit, MI. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 23, at Coolidge Cemetery Association with Rev. Curtis Holland officiating the graveside service. A viewing will be held on Monday, May 22 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home in Waco. Charles was born July 25, 1930, in Jonesville, Louisiana, to Budrow and Lilac Morris Bass. Charles graduated from Block High School in Jonesville. He joined the Air Force, traveling throughout his career from eastern Europe to Far East Asia and achieved the rank of Master Sargent. He completed his Air Force career as part of a group that designed modifications to B-52 flight simulators. While stationed at James Connally AFB in Waco, he met and married Retha Furlow, his wife of 67 years. After his retirement from the Air Force, they returned to Waco, where he worked for over 15 years at General Tire Co. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Retha Furlow Bass; brothers, Dale Bass and Budrow Bass, Jr.; and sister, Peggy Bass Stone and her husband, Bill; brother-in-law, J. W. Calhoun; brother-in-law, W. H. Furlow and his wife, June; and sister-in-law Martha Furlow Mueck and her husband, Victor. Leaving behind to cherish the many memories are his sons, John R. Bass and wife, Sydna, Charles E. Bass, Jr. and wife, Sandra, Keith H. Bass and wife, Susan; a daughter, Rebecca; four granddaughters, Carey Powell and her husband, Brandon, Sara Lichty and her husband, Erik, Graysen Bass, and Barrett Bass; and five great-grandsons, Hunter Powell, Hudson Powell, Mason Lichty, Lane Lichty, and Jude Lichty. He leaves behind his sisters, Bobbie Bass Calhoun, Georgia Bass Netherland, Dimple Bass Cooper and her husband, Kenneth, Shelia Bass Mayo and her husband, Everett; brother, Mark Bass and his wife, Alyene; sister-in-law, Melvia Bass; brother-in-law, Norman Furlow and his wife, Sue; in addition to his many nephews and nieces. Charles and Retha also ?adopted? 18 Baylor students, providing a home away from home during their time attending the university in Waco. Charles loved to travel and spend time with his family. That was Brad Bassett. He loved deeply, laughed often, and had a way of making everyone around him feel seen and welcome. With heavy and broken hearts, we announce that Bradley Dee Bassett passed away in the early morning hours of January 13, 2026, as the result of a tragic traffic accident while on his way to work. Brad was preceded in death by his Father Dee, Mother Pat and sisters Angela and Teresa. Brad is survived by his wife Tamra Ann, children, Cassidy Marie, Abigail Anne, Logan Bradley (Jaide Makelle Porter), brothers Wayne Bredehoft (Tina), Tom Bassett (Kelly) and sisters Rhonda Cole and Leslie Bassett. During his high school years, Brad was involved in just about everything. He wrestled, played football and basketball, and played the saxophone in the marching band ? embracing each activity with the same energy and enthusiasm he brought to all parts of his life. He was cast in the leading male role, and that moment opened the door to a deep love of music and performance. His parents were immensely proud of his musical talent and encouraged him to nurture it. Brad was often invited to sing at various events and would later become part of several choirs in church and at Idaho State University. At the age of eighteen, with the loving guidance of dear friends, Brad was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was soon baptized into the faith, and in 1994 he was called to serve a mission in Concepcin, Chile. It was there that he met his wife, Tamra Ann Kesner Bassett, who was also serving in the same mission. Brad dearly loved the people of Chile and treasured his time serving among them. He often shared funny and heartwarming stories from those years, memories filled with joy, growth, and connection. His natural charisma shone brightly, and the people were drawn to his warm smile, genuine kindness, and sincere friendship ? qualities that defined Brad throughout his life. After returning home in 1996, Brad and Tamra ? his wife of nearly thirty years ? were sealed in the Portland, Oregon Temple on November 29, 1996. Brad was a devoted, kind, and loving husband who cherished his family and showed his love for them consistently throughout his life. In May 1998, Brad and Tamra welcomed their first daughter, Cassidy. Abigail followed in April 2000, and finally, Logan was born in February 2002. It was as if Brad was born to be a father. The light and joy in his eyes at the birth of each child were unmatched. When Jaide Makelle Porter married Logan, in 2023, and joined our family he couldn?t have been more thrilled. Being there for his family was always a priority for Brad. He rarely missed a basketball game, track meet, softball game, swim meet, or lacrosse match, cheering them on with pride at every opportunity. Brad delighted in laughing with his kids, playing games, and taking them to the movies. He teased them endlessly and kept the family smiling with a constant stream of humorous memes in the family group chat. He also loved singing Karaoke with his family and would often get the whole family singing his favorite songs. His playful spirit and limitless love made every moment with him truly unforgettable. He was already planning next summer?s trip, excited to share it with the newest light of his life?his angelic granddaughter, Oakley Dean Bassett, born just a month ago. That wasn?t quite right so, with a Sharpie, he wrote in bold letters ?BIG? above papa and proudly wore it everywhere. The first time he laid eyes on her, tears welled up, and his heart brimmed with love?it was a moment of pure, unforgettable beauty. When he got out of the army in 1968, he got a job working for Kettinburg Marina in San Diego, California. He lived and worked in San Diego until he retired and moved to Idaho in 2010. Sam enjoyed building small scale train sets. He also enjoyed spending time with his numerous nieces and nephews. He passed away June 29, 2016. Harry was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton Township and the American Legion Post No. 4. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Harry worked for Upton Industries in industrial heat treating. Mr. Bassett is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley, and three daughters, Cheryl (Frank) Siu, Linda (Russell) Nieman, and Wendy (Timothy) Dornan; seven grandchildren, Rebecca Siu, Bonnie Milton, Laura (Michael) Groeller, Paul Nieman, Joseph Nieman, Kevin (Sarah) Dornan, and Kerry Black; eight great grandchildren; six siblings, Randall Bassett, Alvin Bassett, Ivan (Elizabeth) Bassett, Gladys Bassett, and Virginia (George) Carpenter. I, Burwell Bassett of the county of Hawkins and State of Tennessee being weak in body but sound and disposing mind and memory bringing to mind mortality of this life knowing it is appointed for all men once to die and having a desire to dispose of such worldly estate which it has pleased Almighty God to bless me with do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following, to wit: First, I will that all my just debts be paid that my Executors hereinfater named shall sell so much of my personal property as will be sufficient to pay all my just debts. In the name of God amen I Ciceley Bass of the County of Chesterfield and Parish of Dale being very low and weak but thanks to God in perfect mind and memory do make an ordained this my last will and testament in the manner in form following - Imprimus. First I give my wearing clothes to be equally divided amongst my four daughters Mary Walthall, Anne Branch, Elizabeth Wilkinson and Sarah Friend.
