In the year of our Lord one Thousand eight hundred and twenty one July the 17th
In the name of God, Amen, I Daniel Kirkpatrick Senr. being of sound mind and judgment but weak in body and not knowing the day of my death, do make this my last will and Testament. And in the first place, as infinitely of the most importance, I commit myself soul and body into the hands of the Merciful Redeemer in whom I humbly hope I have been enabled to rely for my eternal salvation My soul when released from the frail body to be received to his glory?my body with decent funeral rites to be committed to the ground in the comfortable hope of a glorious resurrection at the last day. As it reflects the disposition of my worldly property amongst the surviving members of my family my will is to wit I bequeath to my beloved wife Sarah one half of the farm on which she now lives to include the mansion house and opportunences on said land said half to be the eastside of the quarter in its whole length to be hers and for her use until her death. To my son Daniel I bequeath the remaining half of the quarter on which I now live and at the death of his mother the whole to him and his heirs. on which I now live and at the death of his mother the whole to him and his heirs.
To my son James I bequeath all that piece or parcel on which he now lives and occupys. Further to my dear wife Sarah I bequeath my horses, cows and whatever stock of whatever kind, Books, household furniture and all of my moveable property of every description to be hers for her use and at her disposal, subject however to the following deductions & charges viz: (1) To pay whatever lawful demands shall come against the estate (2) To give my daughter Martha a horse in addition to what she has already received (3) to give my daughter Mary a horse and saddle, one cow, bed & bedding equal to what her other sisters have received (4) To give to my other children Ann, Peggy, George & Sally, in addition to what they have already received, one dollar each These legacies to be paid in time and manner so as not to distress or injure the comfortable subsistence of the widow And I hereby appoint my wife Sarah and my sons James and Daniel to be the executors of this my last will and Testament. In the name of Almighty God amen. I DARLING BASS of the County of Granville and State of North Carolina being of a sound and deeply impressed with the thought of this life and how uncertain the same is have made this my last will and testament.
1. Item. I want my body to be buried in a Christian like manner
2. Item. At my decease I want all my just debts paid.
3. Item. I want my loving wife RODAY to have all my property during her life of widowhood if she marries she is only to have what the law will allow her if my executors or administrator should think my wife is wasting the property, he is to take it away from her and place it where I want it to go that is to HENRY ANDERSON.
Item 4th. My will and desire is that at the desire of my said wife all my property be given to her son HENRY ANDERSON my wife son she had by JESSE CHAVIS before I married her.
Item 5th. I want HENRY ANDERSON to take care of his mother and the property.
Item 6th. My will and desire is that when HENRY ANDERSON dies I want all the property I give him to be equally divided among all his lawful children and if any of them should be underage I want there part placed in the hands of some safe person and keep for them untill they are of age.
This my last will and testament signed in the presence of November 14, 1839.

Legatees:

Wife Mary to be given privilege of living on his plantation as long as she remained his widow.

Son William Edward Bass, to whom he willed the trace of land on which he was then living, together with his part of the mill; also his tract of land in Chesterfield County on Turkey Branch, and one-half of his personal estate, plus one-half of what is due the estate and monies on hand when said son reached age of 21 years.

Daughter Ann Giles Bass, willed other half of personal estate and other half of monies on hand and of debts due the estate at the time son William Edward Bass arrives at the age of 21 years.

Executors (bonded for $30,000): Wife, Mary Bass; friend Richard Archer; and son William Edward Bass.

In the Name of God amen, I EDWARD BASS of the County of Granville being very sick and weake in body of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God calling into mind the mortality of Body and knowing that is appointed for all men once to die do make & ordain this my last Will & testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hand of almighty that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a decent Christian burial at the Discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the almighty power of God and of touching such worldly estate where with it hath pleased that God to bless me with in this life I give demise and dispose of in the following manner & form.
Item. I give and bequeath to my well beloved Wife TAMOR my lands where I now live together with all my household furniture and stock of all kinds during her natural life after my just debts being paid.

In the name of God, Amen. I, Jeffery Robertson, of Chesterfield County, being of perfect mind and memory, do make, constitute, and ordain this my last will and testament, revoking all other wills heretofore made by me. First, I will my soul to Almighty God, my maker, hoping through the merits of Jesus Christ to receive pardon and remission for all my sins. My body I desire may be decently intered at the discretion of my Executors herein after named and ask the worldly estate God has been pleased to bless me with, I dispose of in the following manner. First, I leave unto my beloved wife, Judith Robertson, my whole estate both real and personal during the term of her natural life and after her decease to be divided as follows viz: -Item. I give and bequeath unto my wife's son, Henry Mills, one negro man named Dick to him and his heirs forever. -Item. I give and bequeath unto Sarah Slate one horse called Timme, one saddle and bridle, one bed and furniture, one chest, two wheels, one cotton, the other flaxen, also land, unto her one negro boy named Stephen during her natural life and at her death I will and bequeath the negro Stephen unto my son, Nicholas Robertson, to him and his heirs forever, together with the horse if he should survive her.
Lastly I do nominate and appoint my sons Nicholas and Matthew Robertson Executors of this my last will and testament. I also will that my estate be not appraised and that after my wife's death the remainder of my estate that is not herein willed away be equally divided among all my children by my executors as they think proper.

I was married twice: 1st to Lyare (Lydia) Saunders, now dead, by whom I have and have had seven children: Elijah, Elias, James, Sarah, Rebecca, Martha, and Elizabeth; and 2nd. to Maria Richardson, also dead, by whom I have two minor children: Abraham and Cornelia Amarantha. Elijah and Elias to have land between them.
To Abraham and Cornelia Amarantha, $40,000, which is 1/5 of my estate equally between them.
I have recently sold me estate situate in Louisiana for $200,000 payable on credit.

In the name of God Amen I Michael BAFSETT of Cowden in the County of Kent Yeoman being upwards of nineteen years of age and somewhat indisposed in body but of sound and disposing mind and understanding thanks be given to Almighty God for the same doe make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say I first give my soul into the hands of Almighty God my creator and my body I recommend to the Earth to be decently buried and as to my worldly Estate I give and dispose of as followeth

First I give unto the poor of the several parishes of Cowden and Chiddingstone the several sums of fifty shillings to each parish to be distributed amongst them within one month next after my decease by the Minster and Church wardens of each parish
I also give and bequeath unto my Grandmother Elizabeth GAYNSFORD five pounds to be paid her within twelve months next after my decease

In my hall of my mansion house my cubberde; in the kitchen my furnace, and in the mills all my stones, bins, troughs, crowes and other implements.
To Alice Geale my maid servant 40s.
Residue of my goods and chattels to my wife Kateryne, who is to be executrix.
Overseers my friends William Birsty, Henry Streatfeild, Edward Everest and Thomas Saunder of Chiddingstone.

To Kateryne for life my house wherein I dwell and certain parcels of land in full satisfaction of her jointure. If she accept that then she shall also enjoy all my other lands, together with my two mills and also all that parcel of meadow called Eyland, 12 acres lying in Chiddingstone until my two sons Pentecost Bassett and Michael Bassett come of age. On condition that she brings up my two sons in all godly education befitting their degree and pay them from age 16 to 21 20s each yearly.
At age 21 to Pentecost all my said house where I dwell with my mills and all houses barns and buildings belonging except a house standing upon a parcel of land called Gillandes together with all the lands meadows pastures waters streams flowing of waters woods underwoods etc to my said house and mills belonging situated in Chiddingstone.
All the said parcel of meadow called the Eyland to my son Michael. Katherine shall within one year after my decease at her own expense remove and take down the above mentioned house upon the said parcel of land called Gillandes and erect it on the said parcel of land called the Eyland.
To Pentecost all my lease of the flowing of water to the sawmill at 21 and in the meantime Kateryne to have it on condition she does not make void the said lease.

Imprimus, first I give to my loving wife Mary Bass the use of the plantation whereon I now live and all the lands adjoining of the old tract also two hundred acres of land lying in the county of Amelia it being part of a tract whereon my son William Bass now lives on and joining the lands of Christopher Bass divided by nods branch also the following negros are York, Anake, Doll, Beck, Dick, Old Dawson, Civil, Frank, Spark and Hanner, during her widowhood and after her death or marriage to return as hereafter devised.

Item. I give and devise to my daughter Mary Clay a negro wench Phillis and her increase that my daughter have now in her possession to her, her heirs and assigns forever.

Item I give devise and bequeath to my son William Bass my plantation in the county of Amelia whereon he now lives and all my lands adjoining but that he shall not have the use and possession of the two hundred acres above lent my wife until her death or marriage also the following negros, Jack, Museer and all the increase of the said Museer and I do not remember the names of the children, Epap, Sam,Doll and York also one third of my plantation, horses, cattle, hogs, and sheep and all the household and kitchen furniture that he has now in his possession to him his heirs and assigns forever.

Item I give devise and bequeath to my son John Bass the following negros Brandon and Nuth also all the stock of horses, cattle and hogs and household and kitchen furniture that he has now in his possession to him his heirs and assigns forever.

Item I give devise Aand bequeath to my daughter Frances Walthall the following negros Jack and Judy and the increase of the said wench Judy which she has now in possession to herher heirs and assigns forever.

Item I give devise and bequeath to my son Henry Bass the plantation whereon he now lives and lands adjoining up to the line of the old tract whereon I now live including the lands I bought of Henry Womack also two negros Sharpe and Doll, also all the stock furniture and utensils on the said plantation to him his heirs and assigns forever.

Item I give devise and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Bass two negros Combo and Little Beck. Feather bed and furniture of the value of eight pounds current money and horse and saddle of the value of ten pounds half a dozen pewter dishes and a _____plates and half dozen Rush bottom chairs to her her heirs and assigns forever.

Item I give devise and bequeath to my daughter Lucy Bass two negros Young Rosser and Alice one feather bed and furniture of the value of eight pounds current money one horse and saddle of the value of ten pounds half a dozen pewter dishes and a dozen plates andhalf dozen Rush bottom chairs to her her heirrs and assigns forever.

Item I dive devise and bequeath to my son Archard Bass the plantation and tract of land I bought of William Robertson also two negros Daniel and Diner and one featherbed and furniture of the value of eight pounds current money four cows and calves and two sows and pigs also fifty five pounds current money in lieu of twenty pounds and the use of it that he might claim under a gift by the will of Jeremiah Walthall to him his heirs and assigns forever.

ItemI give devise and bequeath to my son Edward Bass my plantation of Skin Quarter and all my lands adjoining also two negros Sand and Agge four cows and calves two sows and pigs and one feather bed and furniture of the vslue of eight pounds current money to him his heirs and assigns forever.

Item I give devise and bequeath to my daughter Martha Bass two negros Jenny and Cully also one feather bed and furniture of the value of eight pounds current money one horse and saddle of the value of ten pounds half dozen pewter dishes a dozen plates and half dozen rush bottom chairs to her her heirs and assigns forever.

Item I give devise and bequeath to son Thomas Bass the plantation and tract of land I bought of James Robertson also two negros Joe and Lottice one feather bed and furniture of the value of eight pounds current money four cows and calves and two sows and pigs to him his heirs and assigns forever.

Item I give devise and bequeath to my son Joseph Bass the plantation whereon I now live on and lands adjoining to include the old tract also two negros Young Jack and Phillis one feather bed and furniture of the value of eight pounds current money four cows and calves two sows and pigs to him his heirs and assigns forever.

Item All mynegroes and personal estate not already by this will given away I give the use of to my loving wife Mary Bass during the time she continues my widow and at her death or marriage I give all the negroes and personal estate lent my wife to be equally divided between all my childrenthat shall be then alive and if any of my children that is or then have been married and dead before this division shall happen and leaving issue the said issue shall have the same part or portion that the father or mother would have had in case they had lived until such division had been made. Mywill and desire is that if either my sons Archard or Thomas shall die before they arrive to the age of twenty one years that the survivor shall have the land given them by this will and the other part of the estate to be equally divided between all the brothers. My further will and desire is that if either of my daughters should die unmarried and under the age of twenty one years that the survivors of them being unmarried or under the age of twenty one years shall equally divide its part or portion alloted them by this will and I do hereby appoint my loving wife Mary Bass and my sons William Bass, Henry Bass and Archard Bass joint executors of this my last will and testament revoking and making null and void all and every other will or wills formerly made by me. I, William Bass of the county of Sampson in the state of North Carolina being in perfect health and of sound mind and memory and knowing that it is once appointed for all men to die do make and declare this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following to wit: It is my will that all my just debts be discharged and satisfied. Item. I lend and not give to my beloved wife Cela, the whole of my property during her naterual life or widowhood wxcepting a few things hereafter mentioned. Item. Likewise my will and desire is that my dear wife Anne Bassett shall live upon the plantation whereon I now live with all the land running to the Branches which is called Charles Fleming's Spring Branch and the same peaceably and quietly to enjoy and possess without any molestation or trouble whatsoever during her natural life and after her decease the said plantation my will and desire is that my daughter Ursellia Bassett shall live upon the aforesaid plantation during her natural life and after her decease to return to my son John Bassett and his heirs forever, as is aforesaid expressed. Willard Otha Gregg, 94, of Grand Ridge died Friday, June 19, 2009, at Jackson Hospital.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, Mr. Gregg was a Navy veteran and served two terms with Conservation Corp during the Depression. He retired from Florida State Hospital as a ward supervisor, was a member of the Assembly of God church and loved farming.
He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Gladys Tew; his parents, Robert Charles and Lola Eva Hopkins Gregg; four brothers, Lee Gregg, Albert Gregg, Howell Gregg and Herman Gregg; two sisters, Mary Lou Alford and Callie Moneyham.
Survivors include one son, Donny Gregg and wife Norma of Grand Ridge; three daughters, Dyphner Hurst of Apopka, Junnell Crell of Grand Ridge and Jacqueline Forro and husband Lewis of Savannah, Ga.; one brother, Everett Gregg and wife Louise, and one sister, Eleanor Edenfield, all of Marianna; and three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 22, at the Sneads Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Juno Douglas officiating. Interment will be at Shady Grove Cemetery with James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.

51682 Willard was the editor of "The Pacific Weekly" in the early 1930's in Carmel, California. He had a daughter that
went to San Jose State University.

Willard followed in his father's occupation as a newspaperman. He
started in Oakland, California in 1904 and covered the San Francisco
earthquake two years later. He worked as reporter and editor for many major
west coast papers, as well as one each in Boston, and Providence, Rhode
Island. In the early 1920's, he started up and owned the Honolulu Times of
Hawaii. He was also associated with the Carmel Cymbal and Pacific Weekly
magazine both of Carmel, California. After the war, he returned to Hawaii to
become John H. Wilson's (mayor of Honolulu) administrative assistant. Until
his death he was very active in the Democratic Party.

HONOLULU, T.H., Jan. 26 (U.P.) – Willard K. Bassett, administrative
assistant to Honolulu Mayor John H. Wilson and a well-known California
newspaperman, died at Queen’s Hospital here today.
Bassett, 66, succumbed to injuries suffered when he was struck by a
car near his Waikiki home Jan. 17.
Bassett’s wife, the former Miriam Stacker Holloway whom he married in
1952, was at his bedside when he died. He also leaves three children by former
marriages, James M. Bassett of San Francisco, Mrs. Wilma McKay of Monterey,
Cal., and Oliver Bassett, who also lives in Californi

Mayor's Aide Loses Fight For Life

W.K. Bassett, administrative assistant to the mayor and long a stormy
figure on Hawaii's political scene, died early this morning at Queen's
hospital of complications arising from injuries he received when he was struck
by a car January 17.
He would have been 67 years old on Feb 15.
His wife was at his bedside when he died. He had taken a sudden turn
for the worse yesterday after apparently being on the road to recovery from a
crushed chest and multiple other injuries suffered when a car flung him 80
feet through the night air on Kalakaua Ave.
Mr. Bassett, destined to leaven Honolulu's political scene for many
years, was born in Oakland, California on Feb 15, 1887.
In a biographical sketch which strangely he wrote himself a short time
ago, he explained that he was "christened Willard Kenneth, much to his
disgust."
Throughout his adult life, he preferred the use of his initials.
During one of the periods when "WKB" was much in the headlines, he quipped he
could think of only three men who would be instantly recognized from their
initials by newspaper readers: FDR,HST and WKB.
It was his scorching wit, together with his refusal ever to compromise
on the principles of political liberalism which he held, that made Mr. Bassett
a center of controversy in the news.
His command of the English language and his knowledge of literature
made him a writer of unusual abilities.
Through his use of first the printed word and later the radi
became a potent influence in the political scene here.
Mr. Bassett's father was James Madison Bassett, a colorful personality
who had crossed the plains to California in 1856 in the gold-rush period, he
was a mining partner for a time with Joaquin Miller, later renowned as a
Western poet.
The elder Mr. Bassett became an editorial writer on the San Francisco
Chronicle, and then editor and publisher of the Los Angeles Herald, now the
Herald Express.
He later was editor and publisher of the Golden Era in San Francisco,
where Sam Clemens (Mark Twain) and Bret Harth were typesetters for hi
The father, too, influenced political events by his writings. He was
the author of a noted series of "Old Pard" open letters to Colis P.
Huntington, providing the groundwork for Hiram Johnson's fight against the
railroad stranglehold on California.
W.K. Bassett was to devote his life to two interests: Newspapers and
politics.
When his father died in 1903 he left Oakland high school to help
support his family, and a year later he became a cub reporter on the Oakland
Enquirer.
He was a reporter on the San Francisco Chronicle at the time of the
earthquake and fire in 1906, and was on the staff of the Examiner there over
the period of the 1916 Preparedness Day bombing and the investigation a
trials that followed.
He was fond of telling the story of his first trip to Honolu
1919 inspired by a run of luck in a payday dice game at the old San Francisco
Newspapermen's club.
Within a day of his arrival, he had become a member of the staff of
the Pacific Commercial Advertiser. He remained as a feature writer and
waterfront reporter on this paper for 21 months, until his resignation Feb.
25, 1921, to become secretary to John H. Wilson, who had been appointed mayor
to succeed Joseph J. Fern.
He also taught journalism at McKinley high school in 1920 and 21, and
there inaugurated the school paper, The Pinion.
In 1923, Mr. Bassett made his one successful entry into the field of
elective politics, when he ran and was elected to the board of supervisors.
Political old-timers recall his election-eve speech at Aala park as a
masterpiece, and give it credit for his election. He later listed his campaign
expenses: 90 cents.
It was a stormy period for city politics - marked by at least one fist
fight on the floor of the board of supervisors - and in Mr. Bassett's life,
marked by two libel charges.
The first stemmed from publication in "New Freedom" of his charge that
sugar planters were responsible for the murder of a worker. He was convicted
and fined $50.
The second came in 1924, after Mr. Bassett and a group of associates
founded the Honolulu Times, a daily paper, with Mr. Bassett as president and
editor. In it, Mr. Bassett referred to his fellow supervisor, Ben Hollingen as
"a cad". The libel case did not come to trial.
The Times continued its lively career for six and one-half months,
until Mr. Bassett left the Islands abruptly Sept. 17, 19?? on the Matsonia,
leaving his resignations as supervisor and editor.
He worked on the San Francisco Call for a year, and then mov
Carmel, Calif., where he founded a weekly paper, the Carmel Cymba
He went to the East Coast in 1927, and worked on both the Boston
Herald and the Providence, R.I. Bulletin.
He returned to Carmel in 1923, and in 1935 founded the Pacific Weekly,
a liberal magazine with national circulation. As editor, he sought to keep it
open to all viewpoints, and Communists and anti-Communists were among those
who fought out their differences of opinion on its pages.
It eventually was the Communists who forced the magazine out of
business, Mr. Bassett said.
He revived the Cymbal in 1935, and continued its publication until
1941, when he went to join the staff of the San Francisco New
in 1945, Mr. Wilson, then director of public welfare, called Mr.
Bassett to Hawaii to prepare a special report on the departmen
After that was completed, Mr. Bassett returned to the Advertiser
staff, almost 27 years to the day after his first employment by the paper.
Mr. Wilson was elected mayor, and when he took office in 1947 he
appointed Mr. Bassett his administrative assistant, an office he has he
since.
Frequently the target of public criticism, Mr. Bassett habitually met
it head-on.
A long-time friend of the labor movement, Mr. Bassett in 1947 appeared
as a member of an ILWU negotiating committee in pineapple wage talks. T
companies' negotiating committee issued a statement, "amazed" at his action,
but Mr. Bassett continued as a committee member.
In 1949, while vacationing on the Big Island, he delivered an address
to striking longshoremen in Hilo. Again there was a storm of criticism, and
again Mr. Bassett defended his right to act as he saw proper, in his role as a
private citizen.
Several times, under fire, Mr. Bassett tendered his resignation as
Mayor Wilson's assistant because he felt he was "a political detriment to him".
Each time, the mayor refused to accept it.
He outlined his political philosophy last December, when the Junior
Chamber of Commerce invited him to address its member
"I am a liberal, not a Communist," he declared, and he said he
believed the success of Communism in America "would be a catastrophe
Mr. Bassett married Marguerite Baptista of San Francisco in 1908, and
they had three children. The youngest died in 1945. The surviving children are
James M. Bassett, of San Francisco, and his twin sister, Wilma, who now is
Mrs. Theodore McKay of Monterey, Calif.
Mr. Bassett later married Dorothy Castelhun of Newburyport, Mass., a
writer of note, and they had one son, Oliver, now living in Californi

In December, 1952, Mr. Bassett married Miriam Stacker Holloway, who

51684 William (Will) Munsey Junkapiller. He was born August 10, 1883, at Gravelly Hill, Arkansas, the son of A.B.L. Hunkapiller, a Methodist preacher in Atoka during the early 1900's. It is believed that Clair and Munsey had two children, one of whom was Bill Bassett Hunkapiller. B.B. Hunkapiller was born in Atoka on December 12, 1910, and graduated from Oklahoma University in 1932. He spent thirty years in the Army and Air Force, retiring in 1962, as a Colonel. He and his wife, Frances, reside in Winter Park, Florida, naer their children and grandchildren.
Muncy Hunkapiller was part-owner of a hardward store in Atoka which was located between Hammons Drug and Cates Drug on the north side of Court Street between Ohio and Pennsylvania Avenues, until 1919, when he moved his family to Oklahoma City.
