No proof of this has been found as yet. Joseph Bassett (born 1715) of Lynn, Essex County, Massachusetts, had a son, Nehemiah Bassett, born 20 Feb 1748. | 51718 | William and Maria Bassett I would like to give some further information about the Bassetts and in particular William Bassett (b. 1831) and Maria Jones, his first wife, which we find interesting and was our starting point of our research. Firstly, I wanted to show that the economic situation in the area around Tamworth during this period was centred around the canal waterway system with the main canal running from Birmingham, via Curdworth through to Tamworth. Also around this area there were two significant natural clay deposits, one at Cliff and one at Dosthill and these deposits gave rise to brick manufacture in the area. On closer inspection of the canal system it becomes clear that thousands of bricks were used in the construction and maintenance of the system. I believe that the Bassett's exploited this potential as Charles, Thomas, William and others in the family were directly involved in the use of bricks either in the canal system or on major house building projects. To one side of the canal system in this area lie the villages of Wishaw, Middleton, Drayton Bassett and Hints. All of them, apart from Hints, are within half a mile of the canal itself. Dosthill, Kingsbury, Coton and Lea Marston are located on the opposite side of the canal, all within a distance of half a mile of the canal. Country lanes linking all these villages that had been there for centuries criss-cross the area and there existence gave rise to bridges being built when the canal system was being constructed. These bridges were to maintain easy transport links for local inhabitants. At some sites, where bridges allowed cross over points for those on foot, this allowed for quick cross-country links by use of the canal tow paths (which were brick covered) being used as easy walking routes between local villages. It is at the main crossing point where Dunton Lane meets the canal at Marston Bridge that there are several locks (called Curdworth Locks) and here we find two lockkeepers cottages (still in existence). In the 1851 census, William, born 1831, was found completing a bricklayer's apprenticeship in Coton Hall with the Langley family. Edward Langley born about 1811 we believe was a friend or colleague of William's father, Thomas (b. 1795), who was also a bricklayer and was at this time living in Wishaw. William would have had to use Dunton Lane and cross Marston Bridge at the lockkeeper's cottage on route to Coton Hall, whish is less than a quarter of a mile on the other side of the canal. It is at Marston Bridge that we find Benjamin Jones, the lockkeeper, his wife Sarah and their children, one of whom was daughter Maria. It is here, on his journey to Coton Hall where William obviously first met Maria and within a few years married her and moved to Birmingham. We assume that this was due to the massive increase in housing requirements and the Industrial Revolution. William, at this point was a fully skilled bricklayer. Later Maria died in 1866 not long after Thomas (b 1865) was born. William continued as a bricklayer working in Birmingham and soon married Ruth Worley in 1867 and thereafter lived in Guildford Street, 63 Outdoor Beer House (Mansfield Road) and James Street all in Birmingham. She was born June 8, 1907, in Salt Lake City to Fred C. and Orma Banks Bassett. Her lifetime spanned the era of early automobiles to space travel and to the end she embraced the century's progress with eagerness and curiosity. On August 12, 1926, she was married in the Salt Lake Temple to William Ferrin Whitaker, a union that was to last 72 years until his death in 1998. They made their home in the Chicago area, where Ferrin, with Martha's support, enjoyed a successful career in the advertising art business. While there they were among the original members of the newly-organized North Shore Ward. Ferrin retired in 1949 and they relocated briefly to La Jolla, California. In 1951 they created the Homestead resort in Midway, Utah, where Martha may be remembered as manager and gracious hostess. She and Ferrin spent thirty years in Midway until they retired to Provo in 1981. She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served at one tme or another in all its auxiliaries. She enjoyed travel, her family and a wide range of friends from all generations. She is survived by three daughters, Orma Claire Peterson and husband Rod, Constance Jacobs and husband Tony, and Susan Kohler; a son, William Ferrin Whitaker Jr. and wife Sandra; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Her life will be remembered and celebrated at a service to be held Friday, February 25, 2000, at 1 p.m. at the Riverside Chapel, 3500 North 180 East in Provo. A viewing will be held the preceding evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, or Friday, at the Ward Chapel, one hour prior to services. Bassett Dies at Orleans at Advanced Age Was Formerly Connected With Hoffman Bros. Lumber Firm Here Word was received here Sunday evening of the death at his ho Orleans, Ind., of W.H. Bassett, formerly a prominent business man of Fo Wayne, and the grandfather of Mr. Guy Bassett, Mrs. J.H. Hanna and Miss Helen Bassett, of this city. The death of Mr. Bassett occurred about 6:45 o’clock Sunday evening and was due to senility. Mr. Bassett was seventy-six years of age. For about twenty years Mr. Bassett was connected with the Hoffman Bros. lumber firm in this city but about ten years ago he went to Orleans, where he engaged in the lumber business. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter, all of whom reside at Orleans. The sons were associated with their father in business. The funeral services will be held at Orleans on Tuesday and will be attended by several Fort Wane relatives and probably by several of Mr. Bassett’s former business associates in this city. Bassett, 92, died Sunday in Heritage Mano Mr. Bassett a life resident of Shelbyville, the son of Ernest a Grace Lee (Bass) Bassett. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1924. He married Mildred Fox on Sept. 21, 1924. She died May 29, 1976. He married Ruth B. Means on June 12, 1977. She died Aug. 4, 1986. He farmed all his life in Marion Township, Shelby County. He was a member of the Liberty United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Paul Earnest, Shelbyville, and Norm William, Seymour; a brother, Ralph, Marion; two sisters, Helen Cosan, and Mary Ellen (Mrs. Robert) Cooley, both of Kokomo; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Carmony-Ewing Funeral Home, 819 S. Harrison St., with the Rev. Judy Purvis officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
