| 51906 | William G. Cutler?s History of State of Kansas Rice County, Part 5 Henry Wilber Henry Wilber, farmer and stock raiser, Section 16, P.O. Lyons, has 160 acres, 100 of which is cultivated. He located on his farm in 1879. He was born in North New Salem, Mass., March 28, 1835. Lived in his native place until nineteen years old, at which age he went to California and engaged in the lumber and milling business seven years, when he returned to New Hampshire and Massachusetts, and engaged in farming until he came to Kansas. He was married in 1867, to Miss Althea Bassett, of Worcester, Mass. They have one son ? Frederic Augustus. Mr. Wilber and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He has a fine farm in the midst of a rich agricultural district. Carthage Evening Press, Missouri, Tuesday, 24 July 1917 Wilbert Will Is Filed Property to Widow for Use During Her Life ? Then Goes to Sons The will of Henry Wilber, deceased, of Carthage has been filed for probate. He bequeaths $1 each to his two sons, Frederick A. Wilber and Burton H. Wilber. All the rest of his property goes to his widow, Althea R. Wilber, for use during her life-time, and at her death goes in equal parts to the above mentioned two sons. The son Frederic A. Wilber of Joplin is named as executor. The will was written January 26, 1910, with L. Liggett, William H. Black and W. Williams as witnesses. The Carthage Press, Missouri, Thursday, 26 July 1917 Henry Wilber Dead At 82 Retired Farmer Had Made Home Here 13 Years Henry Wilber, aged 82 years, died at 12;45 o?clock this afternoon after a few days? illness at the Wilbert home on West Ninth street. Death was due to senility. he had been failing gradually for some time. Mr. Wilber was born in Salem, Mass., in 1835. He moved to Lyons, Kans., in 1879. He was married in 1857 in Salem to Miss Althea R. Bassett. Three sons were born to this union, one of whom died in infancy. The survivors are the wife and two sons, B.H. Wilber of Joplin and F.A. Wilber of St. Louis. Mr. Wilbert was a retired farmer. He moved to Carthage about 13 years ago and has made many friends since coming here. He was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist. Funeral arrangements will not be made until F.A. Wilber, who is on his way from Michigan to St. Louis, can be heard from. Joplin News-Herald, Missouri, Friday, 20 July 1917 Henry Wilber, Octogenarian, Dies Henry Wilber, 82 years old, died at his home, 209 West Ninth street at 1 o?clock yesterday afternoon. Death was due to senility. Mr. Wilber was born in Salem, Mass., in 1835. He moved to Lyons, Kas., in 1879. He married in 1857. He came to Carthage thirteen years ago. He is survived by the wife and two sons, B.H. Wilbert of Joplin and F.A. Wilber of St. Louis. He was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientists, of this city. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 o?clock tomorrow afternoon at the Ulmer Undertaking Company?s chapel. The readers of the Christian Science church will conduct the services. Biographical History of Crawford, Ida and Sac Counties, Iowa (1893) W.H. Bassett was born in Zanesville, Ohio, December 31, 1859, and since he was seventeen has been a resident of Ida county, Iowa. When quite young he began working at the carpenters' trade, and was associated in business with his father until 1887, since which time he has been conducting a successful business in his own name. He employs from five to seven men during the summer seasons, and in the winter three men. He has erected as many, if not more, buildings in Ida Grove than any other firm here, and he also does a large outside business. In connection with his contracting and building he is also engaged in the real-estate business, buying, fitting up, and selli property. He now has a number of properties in Ida Grove, which he keeps for sale or rental. Mr. Bassett is one of the most enterprising and progressive young men in the county. He is a Republican in politics; is a member of the City Council, and is assistant chief of the Fire Department, having been a member of the same since its organization. Bassett died 26 Jan 1880, aged 8 days Obituary of William Clark Bassett William Clark Bassett was born in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, on the 12th day of March, 1848, and passed away at his home in Ripley, Illinois, the 5th day of October, 1923, at the age of 75 years, 6 months and 23 days. At the age of ten he moved, with his parents, from the Pennsylvania home to Middleborough, Ohio. In 1871 like many other ambitious young men of the day, he sought a new home in the west and finally located at Ripley when about 23 years of age. On the 6th of April, 1872, he was united in marriage with Lucretia Hankins. To this union were born five children, four of whom died in infancy. Of the immediate family there are remaining but the devoted wife, the only daughter, Mrs. Maud Seckman of Johnson, Nebraska, two granddaughters, Mrs. Mary Jones of Tecumseh, Nebraska. Mrs. Laura White of Filley, Nebraska and five grandsons: Leonard, Cline, Harlan, Paul and Scott Seckman of Johnson, Nebraska, and two great-grandchilren. William Clark Bassett united with the Christian church under the preaching of Elder Patterson, soon after his marriage in 1872. He was baptized by Elder J.L. Palmer. For over 50 years Brother Bassett has been a faithful adherent of the church of his early choice. He has served the church in every possible capacity from lowest to the highest. He has filled the office of teacher in the Sunday school, superintendent of the Sunday school, deacon and elder. No member of the church would be missed as will William C. Bassett for no place in the church has so seldom been vacant. No sacrifice has been too great for him to make for the church, either financial or otherwise and he has always counted such service "all joy". In time of need he has stood in the pulpit and conducted funeral services and has a been every ready to speak the gospel message when opportunity offered. Even after his health began to fail, he insisted upon caring for the furnace, lights and rang the bell seeming to feel that these were some of the tasks his hands could find to do for the Master. In the entire community there has never been a stronger advocate for Temperance in life, voice, and ballot than W. C. Bassett. The following is the favorite verse of his favorite hymn: "Let shadows came, let shadows go, Let life be bright, or dark with woe I am content, for this I know Thou thinkest Lord of me! For about seventeen years, Mr. Gruelle conducted it as an advocate of Republican principles, during which time, by close attention to the business interests of the office, and a due regard for those of his adopted county and city, he merited and received a fair share of success. He died in Arcola on the 23rd of October, 1883, in the prime of life, after nearly a year's illness. The paper is continued under the management of W.H. and J.H. Bassett, lessees, and bids fair to maintain its high character. Historical and Biographical Record of Douglas County, Illinois (1900) Judge W.H. Bassett was born Januay 12, 1832, on a farm in Harrison county, Kentucky, and there grew to manhood, receiving a common-school education. He later attended a commercial college in Cincinnati, Ohio, graduating May 12, 1854. Afterward he engaged in the mercantile business in Cynthiana, Kentucky. He came to what is now Douglas county, Illinois, in 1857, and was engaged in farming until 1862. At this time he enlisted in Company K, Seventy-ninth Illinois Infantry, and served to the close of the war, filling all the company offices from corporal to captain. Upon returning from his army service our subject engaged in merchandising and farming in and near Arcola until 1882, when he was elected county judge. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1889. Politically Judge Bassett is a Republican, and religiously is an adherent of the Methodist Episcopal church, having joined that society at Millersburg, Kentucky, in 1856. In 1860 our subject was married to Miss Nellie M. Gruell, and two children are the result of this union: Jonathan H., residing at Arthur, Illinois, and Martin H., residing at Mattoon, Illinois. UNEXPECTED DEATH OF JUDGE BASSETT OCCURED AT TUSCOLA FRIDAY MORNING 14 Sep 1911 County of Douglas, Illinois (1884) William H. Bassett, County Judge, was born January 12, 1832, in Harrison County, Ky. He graduated at Bartlett's Commercial College in 1854. He came to Coles (now Douglas) County in 1857, and farmed until he enlisted, July 21, 1862, Company K, Seventy-ninth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry (Co. Buckner). He held all the offices from Corporal to Captain. While he was in rebel prison, he was commissioned as Captain, but was not mustered in. He took part in the battles of Stone River, Liberty Gap and Chickamauga. At the latter battle, September 19, 1863, he was captured, and spent eighteen months in prison; he was in Libby eight months, Macon four months, in Charleston under fire of our guns one month; was then taken to Columbia, where he remained until two days before Sherman's army came; thence removed to Raleigh, later to Goldsboro, and through our lines March 1, 1865. He then went to Benton Barracks, Mo., and remained there until the fall of Richmond; then, realizing that the war was over, he resigned, and returned to Arcola, his home. He has lived here most of the time since, and has been engaged in mercantile pursuits. He has frequently been honored by his fellow-citizens with office; he was Assessor of the township several terms, and held the office of Justice of the Peace from 1873 to 1882, when he was elected County Judge, which office he still holds. It is generally acknowledged that his official record has been marked by honesty, promptness and ability. He was married, in 1860, to Nellie M. Gruelle, from Kentucky; Jonathan H. and Hezekiah M. are their children. Both parents are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Bassett united with the church in Arcola by letter in 1858; he is now the only surviving member here who was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in this place at that time. The Judge has been an Odd Fellow for a number of years. Politically, he is a Republican. Jonathan, his son, was married on his twenty-first birthday to Miss Nora, daughter of Rev. J.W. and Mollie Perkins, of Arcola; Nellie is their only child. Jonathan is editor of the Arcola Record, one of the leading papers of the county. 1905 Coles County, Illinois History Martin H. Bassett BASSETT, Martin H., well-known editor and publisher, Mattoon, Coles County, Ill., was born at Arcola, Ill., June 15, 1867, and there received his education. His parents, William H. and Helen M. (Gruelle) Bassett, are natives of Cynthiana, Ky., and his grandparents, Jonathan and Elizabeth (Discher) Bassett, natives of the same State. Jonathan Bassett, the great-grandfather, was a Virginian. On the mother's side his grandfather, John B. Gruelle, was a native of Kentucky and his grandmother, Prudence (Moore) Gruelle, was born in Macon, Ga., the great-grandfather, William Gruelle, being a native of Lyons, France. William H. Bassett, father of the subject of this sketch, is editor and publisher of the Charleston, Ill., "Plaindealer-Herald". During the Civil War he enlisted at Mattoon as a private in the Seventy-ninth Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and was promoted to be Captain of Company K in that regiment. He later served twenty years as County Judge of Douglas County, Ill. Mr. Bassett learned the printer's trade in the office of the Arcola (Ill.) "Record", becoming an apprentice therein at the age of eleven. He has since served as city editor of the Springfield (Ill.) "Evening Telegram", and from there he went to Chicago, where he served as police and court reporter on papers of that city. In 1895 he bought the "Arcola Record" in 1899 became connected with the "Mattoon Journal" and in August of that year in connection with Hon. Emery Andrews he bought that paper. On January 1, 1905, they sold "The Journal". On September 16, 1891, Mr. Bassett was united in marriage with Mary C. Logan, who was born in Arcola, Ill., where she received her early mental training, afterwards pursuing a course of study in the Oxford (Ohio) Female Seminary. One child resulted from this union: William, who was born in Arcola, Ill., July 17, 1896. Mrs. Bassett is a daughter of Samuel B. Logan, Deputy Sheriff of Coles County, just before Douglas county was created from it, and he was elected the first Sheriff of Douglas County. He enlisted in Mattoon in the Union Army for service in the Civil War; was also a soldier in the Mexican War. In politics Mr. Bassett is a Republican. | 51928 | William Herbert Kibler, M.D. (picture included) The Heritage of Burke County, Morganton, North Carolina Dr. William Herbert Kibler, the son of William Michael Kibler and Louisa Henrietta Bristol, was born on Marcy 7, 1884 in Burke County, North Carolina. The Kibler family first came to North Carolina in 1758 when Jacob Kibler, who was born in 1722, and his wife, Mary Butts, migrated to the western part of Rowan County, now Burke County, from Pennsylvania where they had married in 1754. Their son, David, born in 1760, married a Miss Martin in 1785. Their son, Michael, born in 1790, married Catharine Lowrance in 1818. Their son, Milas Michael, born in 1827, and Evelina Johnson whom he married in 1848 were the parents of William Michael Kibler and the grandparents of Dr. William Herbert Kibler. Dr. Kibler had two brothers and three sisters. His brothers were Michael Benedict, born in 1875, and Ralph Emory, born in 1886. His sisters were Bessie Augusta, born in 1876, Edith Henrietta, born in 1879, and Flora Louisa, born in 1881. The early education of Dr. Kibler was in the Bruce Payne School and the Logan Patton School. He entered the University of North Carolina in 1902 and was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1906. While studying at the University, he worked as an assistant in zoology and continued in this position for a year after graduation. He received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1914. Always eager to keep up-to-date in medical science, he attended postgraduate courses at Harvard Medical School, Cook County Hospital in Chicago, the University of Michigan, and New York Polytechnic Institute. In addition every year for twenty years he took postgraduate courses at the University of North Carolina. Prior to enrolling in medical school, he was a teacher in Durham High School, 1907 - 1910; a biology rteacher at Guilford College 1910-1912; a street car condcutor; and a shoe salesman. After receiving the degree in medicine for the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Kibler participated in hookworm eradication research for the Rockefeller FOundation in Dutch Guiana South America. He practiced medicine in Sevier, N.C. and served as county health officer for the North Carolina Board of Health in Nash County. He practiced medicine in Valdese, Drexel, Connelly Springs, Rutherford College, Icard and Hildebran. Then he established a medical practice in Morganton in 1923 and continued as an outstanding physician for approximately fifty years until 1972. He taught anatomy to the nurses in training at Grace Hospital from 1923 to 1955, was a member of the Burke County Board of Health from its inception until 1972, was chairman of the Extension Division of the University of North Carolina Medical School for Burke County and surrounding coutnies for about twenty years, was chief of staff of Grace Hospital for two terms, and was president of the Ninth District Medical Society. He held membership in the American Medical Association, the North Carolina Medical Society, and the American Association of General Practice. For four years he was a member of the North Carolina Hospital Board of Controls. Dr. Kibler was the recipient of numberous honors. He was Burke County Physician of the Year 1956, Morganton Man of the Year 1959, and General Practitioner of the Year for North Carolina in 1956. On March 20, 1964 he was presented the distinguished service award by the Medical School of the University of North Carolina and on December 31, 1973 the Burke County Board of Health presented him a plaque in recognition of thirty-sex years of service. Upon his return from Dutch Guiana in 1918, Dr. Kibler was awaiting a call to enter the Armed Services when World War I ended. During World War II he was an examining physician for Burke County Local Draft Board #1. Dr. Kibler was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Morganton and a life member of the board of stewards of that church. Dr. Kibler was active in community affairs. Prior to his study of medicine he was Acting Deputy Clerk of Burke County Superior Court. He was President of the Morganton Rotary Health Club, 1950-51. He was Chairman of the Health Committee of the Chamber of Commerce that led in the movement to obtina meat inspection for Burke County. Dr. Kibler married Lucy Cornelia Bassett of Fort Valley, Georgia, on August 9, 1926 in Chicago. They had two daughters: Lucy Maud, who was born September 13, 1927, and Flora, who was born May 30, 1930. Flora married Philip George Luckhardt, who was born August 18, 1930. Their four children are Lucy Anne, born March 23, 1961, Mildrec Corell, born December 21, 1962; Amelia Kibler, born Jan.2, 1966; and George William, born June 1, 1971. Dr. Kibler was ambitious and determined through many years to reach his goal of becoming a good doctor. He became an outstanding and dedicated physician serving Burke County people for half a century. He was a person of great integrity exemplifying high principles in medicine, church affairs, and family life. He was always loyal to his community, state, country, and God. Bessette (Picture included) June 15, 1940 - March 17, 2014 Park, New York - Francis “Red” Bessette, formerly of Saratoga Springs, entered into the arms of the Lord on Monday, March 17, 2014, after a brief illness, surrounded by family and friends at Albany Medical Center. He was 73. Born on June 15, 1940 in Whitehall, New York, he was the son of the late Margaret V. Bessette and Francis Rouse. Francis proudly served in the United States Marines from 1960-1967. While serving in the Marines he did active duty in Viet Nam. He was employed by Saratoga Springs DPW before retiring in 2000. He also worked at Saratoga Harness Track doing security. Red loved fishing and enjoyed playing Yahtzee in his spare time. He would often be found at most of the Saratoga High School football games on the weekends. Red was that man that would lend a hand to anyone in need, no matter what the need was he gave his all. He loved his family deeply and did all he could to make them strong and loving. He will be greatly missed by all. In addition to his mother and father, Red is predeceased by a brother, Francis ”Jake” O’Melia, and a sister, Peggy Roarick. Survivors include his wife, Penny L. Bessette of Clifton Park; his children, Chris L. Shipley of Glens Falls, Anthony T. Bessette of Saratoga Springs, Jocelyn J.(Johnson) Milne of Anchorage, Alaska, Jamie L. and CJ Bessette of Saratoga Springs; 11 grandchildren and another one expected in August of 2014, one great-granddaughter and another one expected in July of 2014. He is also survived by a brother George E. Woodard of Albuquerque, New Mexico and many nieces and nephews located in New York, New Mexico, Colorado, Virginia and Texas. Mr. Bassett was born in 1861 in Downpatrick, Ireland, and was educated in his native land and in New Zealand, where he arrived in the ship "Blairgowrie" in 1875. Mr. Bassett was for two years engaged in business in Christchurch, and afterwards bought "Stormont", which was originally part of the Woodstock run, in the View Hill district, North Canterbury. The property contains 1144 acres freehold and 240 acres leasehold, and the permanent improvements include a fine dwelling-house of ten rooms, large and convenient outbuildings, garden and orchard sheltered by a well-grown plantation. It is fenced and subdivided with twenty-two miles of fencing, is wellwater by natural springs and creeks and has produced good crops of turnips and rape. A large number of crossbred sheep and lambs are reared and fattened. Mr. Bassett afterwards bought "Meadowbank", near St. Andrews, where he now resides. | 51948 | William Laudius Bassett, son of James and Elisa Bassett, was born 16 Dec 1835 in Macon, Georgia. He died 9 Dec 1908 in Neshoba County, Mississippi (NCR). He married Lucy Jeroline Crockett, daughter of Nathaniel and Eliza Crockett, on 7 Feb 1865 in Neshoba County, Mississippi. Lucy was born 8 May 1839. She died 1 Jun 1898. He enlisted in May 1861 as a private in Company D 11th Mississippi Infantry and was discharged from Service in Nov 1861 to raise another company. He enslited in Company F. 40th Mississippi regiment in May 1862 and was elected 1st Lietuenant at organization of the company. He was promoted to Captain on 20 Sep 1862. He was in active command of M. Company in the battle of Iuka, Corinth, Seige of Vicksburg and Big Black River Mississippi, Decatur, Alabama, Franklin and Nashville, Tennessee and the entire Georgia campaign. He was wounded three times but was never disabled. He surrounded command at Greensborough, North Carolina in May 1865, General Joseph E. Johnson in command. William served in the lower house of the Mississippi legislature from 1876 to 1880 and from 1884 to 1886 and was a member of the Constitional Convention in the yaer 1890. Also, on 16 Jul 1896 in the Neshoba Democrat he is listed as Sheriff being elected in 1895 for a term of 4 years. (NCR - Neshoba Church Records). 1870 Federal Census of Dist.
