| 51951 | William Leo Jr. (Buster) Bassett BASSETT, WILLIAM LEO JR. (BUSTER) - 84, Halifax, passed away Friday, February 22, 2002 at QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late William and Caroline (Orman). He served overseas with the Canadian Army from 1940 to 1945 and belonged to the Halifax Rifles Association and the 23rd Armored Highlanders. He was a furrier by trade and employed with Charles Brown Furs, Halifax in his earlier years, and later was employed at Mitchell Furs and worked in both their Moncton, and Saint John, NB locations and returned to the Halifax location where he worked until retirement. He was a long time member of Hibernia Lodge No. 3, Saint John, NB; and was a member for 24 years of the Royal Canadian Legion, Vimy Branch #27. Surviving are his son; Dale and wife Kathy, Gaetz Brook, daughter; Darlene, Dartmouth, and granddaughters; Jessica Dunn and Tonya Bassett, brother; Tom, Windsor, sisters; Joan (Mrs. Archie Holmes), Kay (Mrs. Alfred Bradford), Peggy (Mrs. Frank Ludlow), Dorothy (Mrs. George Jarvis), all of Halifax, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Beatrice (Keefe), sisters; Veronica (Mrs. Warren Murray), Nellie (Mrs. Frank Whalen), and brothers; Harry and James. Visitation will be Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM February 25, 2002 in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax, where funeral service will be held Tuesday 2 PM February 26, 2002. | 51952 | William Leonard Amacker died in early manhood. Nathaniel Amacker Record Mrs. J.P. Morris, Jr. of Kentwood, Louisiana, copied this record from a paper found with the 1859 Bible of Abby Kent Amacker, copied elsewhere in the possession of Mrs. Maud Amacker Arnett of Kentwood. She gives these notes regarding them. "Among the colonists from Switzerland who settled Orangeburg, South Carolina in 1735 were the ancestors of the groups of Amackers of the deep South. First to Southwest Mississippi with his family in 1809 came John Jacob Amacker. He came across the state line into Louisiana and built a home in the then St. Helena Parish on the east bank of Beaver Creek in 1813. The children of the family were seven boys and two girls. Four sons and one daughter married and lived near the original homestead. The seventh child, James Albert Amacker married Lydia Tate and settled in Poplarville, Mississippi. The sixth child, Nathaniel Amacker settled near the old family home. His family records were copied from his Bible by Edgar A. Bassett of Los Angeles, California. He was the husband of Nathaniel Amacker's granddaughter, Eva Kent Bassett." The records copied were on three sheets of paper, with his stamp on them, and this note on the back of the three folded sheets: "Family records, Nathaniel Amacker, born 1811, Father, John Amacker, Mother, Sarah Varnado Amacker." | 51964 | William married twice and had three children by his second wife. Moved to the west. In 1870, he worked for the rail road in China, Maine, and had an estate worth $2000. After the apparent divorce from Flavilla, he eloped with Hannah, who had also been previously married. Hannah's daughter from her first marriage was at that time married herself, so she did not join William and her mother when they left Maine for Kansas. William and Hannah were married in route to Arkansas City, in Kansas City, Missouri. In Arkansas City, he was the superintendent of the Street Railway Company, a street car system for the city, and was the superintendent of the Land Improvement Company, and built the canal and head gates that gave water power to the two flour mills in town. He shot himself for reasons unknown. From a 24 Aug 1899 Dover, Maine Newspaper we have "The many friends of William Bassett of Arkansas City, Kansas, are glad to see him back here on a visit. He left here in 1880. He has been in the employe of a Land & Improvement Co. which has a canal over 5 miles long, a street railway and 14 farms, all of which Mr. Bassett has charge of. | 51969 | William McGinnis Obituary - August 16, 1925 Mr. Wm. McGinnis, sixty-one years, old, died at his home at DeCamp, Mo., at 10 o'clock, Sunday, August 16, 1925. Mr. McGinnis was born August 5, 1864, and died August 16, 1925, making his age sixty-one years and eleven days. He was married to Ellen Bassett, November 22, 1888. The deceased has lived an upright and honest life and was well liked by his many friends. He has taken an active part in the mining industry in the iron ore mines in this part of the country. During the last few years he has lived on his farm near DeCamp, Mo. He took ill with lung trouble a few weeks ago and only lasted a short time. All was done that loving and tender hands could do, but God saw fit to remove our dear one from us. The deceased is survived by his wife and eleven children, Hugh and Roy, of St. Louis; Mrs. Blender, of Carthage, Ill.; Mrs. Shultz, of Cuba, Mo.; Mrs. parker, of Cardinn, Okla.; Mrs. Coleman, of Dillard, Mo.; the children at home are Mike, Mary, Etta and Irene McGinnis. Funeral services were conducted by the Modern Woodman, which were held at the Adams cemetary at DeCamp on August 17, 1925. The Post, Salem, Missouri, August 20, 1925 William McGinnis William McGinnis, a very highly respected citizen of near DeCamp, Phelps County died at his home Monday, Aug. 16, after an illness of about two months. Mr. McGinnis was born August 4, 1864, and was 61 years and 11 days old at the time of death. Wm. McGinnis was married Miss Mary Ellen Bassett on October 22, 1898 and to this union 13 children were born. One son and the first born died in infancy and one daughter ? Maggie Ann died July 17, 1903 at the age of 12 years. The other children were all present at the funeral which was conducted Monday afternoon at Adams Cemetery under the auspices of the Modern Woodman of America of which he was a member. Besides his wife Mr. McGinnis leaves to mourn his death three sons, eight daughters, Mike of Mississippi, Henry and John of Salem and two sisters of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Mary Kneedler of Collinsville, Illinois besides several nieces and nephews. | McGinnis, William M. | 51973 | William Norwood Bass Jr. Obituary, Source Unknown William Norwood Bass Jr., 79, of Hickory, passed away on Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Born Nov. 10, 1930, in Winston-Salem, he was the son of the late Elizabeth Springs Bass and William Norwood Bass Sr. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Hickory and worked at Century Furniture until his retirement in 1995. Bill had polio as a child and was unable to actively participate in athletics, but his passion for sports never waned. He spent over 57 years volunteering his time as public address announcer both for Hickory High School and Lenoir-Rhyne College. As a result he was nicknamed "The Golden Voice." The press box at HHS Frank Barger Stadium was dedicated to Bill and named for him in 1999, and he received a plaque from Lenoir-Rhyne College which said, "You will always be the voice of the Bears." Bill received a key to the city of Hickory in 1996, and Oct. 12, 1996, was designated "Bill Bass Day." Bill's family, his friends and the entire sports community are saddened as "The Golden Voice" is now silent. He is survived by his sister, Margaret Bass Hardin of Concord; nieces, Beth Shuler Kapil and husband, Vijay, of Raleigh, Jane Lee Shuler and husband, Steve Neuville, of Hickory, Beth Hardin Hudson and husband, John, of Concord; special family friend, Shelby Spiva of Hickory; and a number of great-nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Deborah McEachran officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bill Bass Memorial Scholarship Fund (for deserving football and baseball athletes at Hickory High School), Hickory Public Schools, 432 4th Ave., SW, Hickory, N.C. 28602, Attn: Kathy Icenhour. On June 4, 1902 he married Trixy Bell Burson. She was born March 7, 1878, in Union County, Ohio, the daughter of Thomas Oliver Burson and Edith Bault Burson. W.O. and Trixy had four children. Their three daughters were educated at Ward-Belmont. Capitola Bassett, the eldest daughter, was married to Hiram Bedford Crosby. Hiram was Rector in the Episcopal Church and passed away some years ago in Banning, California. They had four children, two boys and two girls. Capitola is now in a rest home in Long Beach, California. Carolyn Bassett, the second daughter, was married to T.O. Wright and they have a son and a daughter. Their home is in Elgin, Illinois. Cathryn Bassett is the youngest daughter and was married to Don Williams, who is now deceased. They had two sons, Tom and Dick. Cathryn was a teacher for many years and lives at San Jacinto, California. W.O. and Trixy's fourth child was William Oliver (Billy) Bassett, born April 25, 1916 and died October 31, 1922, at the age of six from polio. The Bassetts came to Okmulgee about 1915 from Butler, Missouri. They had a beautiful home with servants' quarters on the rear of the property located in the five hundred block of North Seminole. W.O. held various prominent jobs in Okmulgee. He was a stock holder in the Union National Bank, ran the Morris Plan Bank for a time and was very active in the oil business in Okmulgee County. In later years he was Okmulgee County Commissioner, a job he held at the time of his death. He passed away October 19, 1934 and is buried at the Okmulgee Cemetery. After her husband's death, Trixy stayed in this area for awhile, then moved to San Bernardino, California, near her nephew, Fred Fast, formerly of Okmulgee. She worked during the war at Norton Air Force Base, San Bernardino, California later moving to Beaumont, California to make her home near her daughter, Capitola. Trixy Bell Burson Bassett died May 25, 1957, in Beaumont, California. Bassett, 71, of Salem, with burial to follow at the Paradise Cemetery in Salem. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Mike Ice will officiate. Bassett died at 4:18 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, at Doctors Nursing and Rehabilitation in Salem. He was born in Albion on Feburary 5, 1923, the son of Floyd and Catherine Hatlett Bassett. On July 18, 1942, in Wayne City, he married Doris Wilson. He was a retired welder and he attended the Nazarene church. Survivors include: his wife, Doris Bassett; a son, Gary Bassett and wife Linda of Keenes; a sister, Lyndall Patterson of Aurora; one grandchild, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: his parents; a son, Roger Bassett; a brother, Larry Bassett; and a sister, Opal Moore. William Rowe Bass, 84, of Cumberland, passed away Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at Lions Center for Rehabilitation and Extended Care. Born Jan. 17, 1930, in Miami, Fla., Mr. Bass is the son of the late Julian Gordon Bass and Ethel (Rowe) Bass. He was also preceded in death by a brother, J. Gordon Bass Jr., and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Bill was a graduate of Virginia Tech, class of 1960, where he earned his electrical engineering degree. He was a United States Air Force veteran of the Korean era. Bill was an electrical engineer for the Celanese Fibers Corporation of America and retired from B.A.S.F. Chemical Company, Anderson, S.C. He was a past member of the Kiwanis and served on the Board of Directors for Meals on Wheels in South Carolina. Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Ann Bass; his daughter, Kyler Merrick and husband, Steven, Duncansville, Pa.; and his son, Kevin Bass and wife, Carol, Accident. He is also survived by his grandchildren, James Merrick and wife, Allison, Phoenix, Ariz., Kara Ayaram and husband, David, Georgetown, Texas, Jeremy Merrick and wife, Suzie, Williamsburg, Va., Matthew Bass, Washington, DC, Scott Bass, Bethesda, and Emma Bass, Baltimore, as well as four great-grandchildren. Vicksburg Evening Post One Man is Dead in I-20 Smash-Up One Gulfport man was killed and three other people were injured in a traffic accident on Interstate 20 near Bovina about 4 p.m. Friday (October 15, 1982). The dead man was identified as William E. Bassett, 40. He was apparently stationed at the Navy's Construction Battalion Base in Gulfport. His body was taken to Fisher Funeral Home for local arrangements and was to be transferred to the Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, LA for services. The accident happened in the westbound lane of Interstate 20 about 3/4 of a mile west of the Bovina exit. At least three vehicles were involved, an American Motors car driven by Bassett, a laundry truck owned by the Pearl Laundry in Peark and driven by Howard Holcomb, 58, of 6300 Old Canton Road in Jackson, and a pickup driven by Cecil Anderson, 62, of 4516 Lee Road in Vicksburg. Reports indicate the possibility of additional vehicles involved. There are also indications that a vehicle was on the wrong side of the road, but has not been confirmed by officers. Coroner L.W. Callaway III said the inquest ruled that Bassett died of body and head injuries received in the accident. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mercy Regional Medical Center at 5:10 p.m. Emergency medical technicians of the Vicksburg-Warren County Amublance Service said Bassett's car was virtually disintegrated. Holcomb, Cecil Anderson and Mrs. Anderson were taken to the Mercy Medical Center by ambulance service. A hospital spokesman said Holcomb was in stable condition this morngin suffering from a broken leg. Anderson was also in stable condition with a strained neck. Mrs. Anderson was treated for bruises of the leg and released. The accident was investigated by Highway Patrolman Bob Huelett, but he was not available for details of the wreck. His body was interred October 17, 1982 in Ansley, Jackson Parish, LA, Ansley Cemetery. Ruston Daily Leader W.E. "Bill" Bassett, 40 of Ruston, died Saturday as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Vicksburg. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Ansley Union Church with the Rev. Bill Stokes officiating. Burial was in the Ansley Cemetery. He was a SW-1 U.S. Navy and was a Seabee in the Navy. He was a member of the Ansley Union Church.
