They had four children, one of which was Ashley M. Bassett, born July 1, 1840, and married Mary Garner. They had five children; William J. married Katie Personius; Nellie, married George Champine; Ila, married Chester Personius; Daisy, married Lever Champine, and Solomon C. who married May Palmer. I don't know much more of this family's older history and there is no one left to ask. Written by Robert Champine. OBITUARY OF WM. O. BASSETT William Orland Bassett was born in Tompkins County, New York in 1815. His father died when he was a little more than a year old and he then went to live with his grandfather, Peter Powers, with whom he remained during h boyhood and youth. The common schools of the neighborhood afforded him educational privilege, and he made his first start in life at farm work. Industry and perseverance were traits in his character which were early manifested, and he worked long and earnestly to get a start in lif In 1839 he was united in marriage to Katie Maria DeCondris and settled in New York removing a few years later to Port Washington, Wisconsin and in 1863 he came to Martin County, Minnesota, settling on a homestead in Tenhassen Township and for years enduring all the trials and hardships of a true pioneer life. He lived on his farm thirty one years, transforming the raw prairie into rich and fertile fields, literally making the desert to bud and blossom as the rose. In 1893 Mr. Bassett sold his farm and came to Fairmont with his wife to reside, and after the latter's death (about two years ago) he made his home with his son Ashley M. Bassett, where he died, on Tuesday, May 13 at the advanced age of 87 years. Besides his son and daughter, Mrs. W. C. Persons of Ceylon survive him. Mr. Bassett was an honest upright independent man, and enjoyed the respect and confidence of all who knew him. He loved his home, his country, and his God. He showed his love of country by following the stars and stripes through the struggle of the civil war. He was wounded at the Battle of Shilo and carried the scar of the gunshot wound to his death. He showed his love of God and his desire to please him by being a kind husband, a good father and an accommodating neighbor. In all the relations of life, whether a citizen, a soldier or a Christian, he was always faithful and true. He was a man of the strictest integrity, genial and accommodating, and one who made friends of all with whom he came in contact. He has passed to the home beyond but his memory will live in the hearts of many who through his influence and example were led to live higher and better lives. Memorial Record of the Counties of Faribault, Martin, Watonwan and Jackson By Solomon Canright (1895) William Orlando Bassett, a retired farmer now living in Fairmont, is numbered among the honored early settlers of Martin County, his residence here covering a period of nearly a third of a century. He has therefore witnessed the greater part of its development and progress, and has aided in its upbuilding and advancement. The best interests of the community have ev found in him a friend, and to such men the county owes its present prosperity. Mr. Bassett is descended from an old New York family. His grandfather, Isaac Bassett, lived for many years in Cortland, New York, and the father of our subject, William Bassett, claimed Connecticut as the state of his nativity. He was drafted for service in the war of 1812, but it was difficult for him to go and he sent a substitute. He married Samantha Powers, a native of Dutchess County, New York, and a daughter of Peter Powers, a local Methodist preacher. The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Bassett was celebrated in the State of their birth, and there the father died November 5, 1816, at the age of twenty-eight years, his birth having occurred January 17, 1787. His wife was born September 2, 1789. After her husband's death she lived with her family in Tompkins County, New York, rearing her children as best she might, although her financial resources were somewhat limited. Her last days were passed in Middleville, Michigan, at the home of her son, Charles Wesley, and she was called to her final rest when more than sixty years of age. In the family were four children, George, Charles and Nelson, all now deceased, and William O., whose name heads this record. The last named was born October 18, 1815 in Tompkins County, New York, and when he was little more than a year old his father died. He then went to live with his grandfather, Peter Powers, with whom he remained during t greater part of his boyhood and youth. On the 1st of January, 1839, Mr. Bassett was united in marriage with Miss Katie Marie De Coudress, a native of Dryden, Cortland County, New York, and a daughter of Christian and Katie (Powers) De Coudress, the former a native of France and the latter of Dutchess County, New York. Their marriage was celebrated in the Empire State and they located in Dutchess County, removing thence to Dryden. On leaving the East they became residents of Wisconsin, the date of their emigration being 1851. They settled in Port Washington, where both died of cholera. In their family were nine children, including Mrs. Bassett, who was born March 31, 1818. To our subject and his wife have been born four children, as follows: Ashley M., born July 1, 1840, wedded Mary Garner and they have five living children: William J., who married Katie Presonius; Nellie, wife of George Champine, by whom she has two children, Mabel and Sybil; Ila Maud, wife of Chester Personius; Daisy Dean, wife of Leaver Champine, by whom she has two children, Ashley and Madeline; and Solomon C., who married May Palmer. Jerome, the second of the family, is now deceased. Mary Iantha, born March 31, 1844, is the wife of Walter Person, and their children, four in number, are: Katie, wife of William Beach and the mother of five children - May, Carrie, Earl, Burns and Linn; Annie, wife of Frank Rooney, by whom she has two children, Frank and Tressa; Burns and Jesse, both at home. Jerome, born January 23, 1847, married Sophia Nichols and afterward wedded I.N. Drake; his five children are: Annie, wife of George Clark and the mother of four children - Georgianna, Harry, Archie and Rosie; George; Frederick; and Ada P., who married James Lampord, and has a daughter, Miriam Alice. Jessie completes the Bassett family. Upon his marriage Mr. Bassett, whose name heads this article, located in New York, removing after a few years to Port Washington, Wisconsin, where he made his home until 1863, which year witnessed his arrival in Martin county. He settled in Tenhassen township and began the development of a farm, living in true pioneer style. The few settlers of the locality were widely scattered and the people were quite fearful of the Indians about the time of his arrival. He broke his land and transformed the raw prairie into rich and fertile fields, also added many improvements to the place in the way of good buildings and the other accessories of a model farm. He lived on the farm for thirty-one years, successfully conducting and managing his business affairs, and then removed to Fairmont, where he has since lived a retired life, enjoying a well-earned rest and the fruits of his former toi During the late war Mr. Bassett responded to his country's call for troops, thus manifesting his loyalty to the Union and the northern cause. He was assigned to Company F, Sixteenth Wisconsin Infantry, and at the battle of Shiloh was seriously wounded by a gunshot in the right forearm, which disabled him for further duty, and in consequence of his physical disability he was honorably discharged in Madison, Wisconsin. He is now a member of the Grand Army Post of Fairmont. When the Republican party was formed to prevent the further extension of slavery he joined its ranks and is still one of its stalwart supporters. He has served as Supervisor of Tenhassen Township, but has never aspired to public office, preferring to give his entire time to his business interests. The cause of education has ever found in him a warm friend, and he gave land on which to build a schoolhouse. Bassett, were held Friday, August 12, from her home. The Rev. N. Johnstone, retired Baptist pastor, officiated and burial was made in the Ulysses Cemetery. Mrs. Bassett died early Wednesday morning, August 10, at her home near Ulysses following a few months? illness. She was born at Ulysses, November 15, 1876, daughter of George and Sarah Bennett. On January 28, 1898, she married William E. Bassett and spent her entire life in Ulysses Township. She is survived by her husband, two sons, George and Merle; a daughter, Mrs. Alvin Lounsbury, and three grandson, Floyd, Roger and Raymond Lounsbury, all of Ulysses; also one sister, Mrs. Allen Brewster of Corning, N.Y.; two brothers, Bython and Burt Bennett of Ulysses; several nieces and nephews. He passed in his favorite recliner, surrounded by the hearts he had raised. He entered his final season reminding his girls that there should be no tears, and he savored his last steaming cup of tea the morning before his passing. He lived right up until he died: walking the woods, tending his garden, and sending Christmas cards. Born in Hastings, Michigan, August 9, 1933. The son of George and Ethel (Little) Bass, Lee was raised in Nashville, Michigan, by a kind, quiet father and a trailblazing mother who held a UAW picket line not long after she was granted the right to vote. Consumed by tales of the North since he was a pup and a voracious reader for as long, Lee was a devoted patron of the Putnam District Library when the family visited town, returning home most often with White Fang or Call of The Wild. He graduated from Maple Valley High School in 1952 and joined the service one year later, and to his delight he was stationed in Hawaii during the Korean War. He excelled at tinkering and was naturally inclined to disassemble and reassemble anything mechanical so found himself assigned the role of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician and forever boasted to have had all 10 fingers and toes with him at the separation of service. He reminisced stories of young men in empty fields detonating bombs, which undoubtedly contributed to his lifetime of poor hearing. Always adamant about education, after his military service, he used the GI bill to pursue courses in electronics. In 1959 he met his future wife, Betty, who, along with little Pammy, accompanied him to Florida where they married in 1960, on a day where they aligned their lunch breaks to allow time for a stop at the courthouse before clocking back in. Ever pragmatic. The growth in his career saw Lee and his family, now including second daughter Laurie, move to Washington County, Maine, where he was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration as a radar technician and stationed at Bucks Harbor AFB. The family lived in Cooper for 14 years. He was delighted to work with the Cooper community and served on the school board, volunteer fire department and counted Justin Day as a good friend. In 1979, the family returned to Michigan, and he retired from the Kalamazoo Battle Creek Airport at a GS 13 level. Immediately bored with retirement, he went on to work for Raytheon Technologies where he traveled throughout the US and continued in the field of radar electronics. From the perspective of those writing this, and declared by him endlessly, his true life's work and purpose began after his complete retirement - because from then on, he was a full-time grandpa, at which he excelled. Magnificently intelligent Betty Bass was lost to cancer in 1995. They had shared a lifetime together and yet now have spent nearly a lifetime apart. But there is beauty here. Lee has great grandchildren who were not yet born by Betty's death, and grandchildren who were hardly old enough to remember her on their own - yet they know her. They know her through his adoring stories and consistent affirmations. Reveling in any opportunity to support his grandkids, he began dog mushing in his 60s, with his granddaughter. Winter weekends were spent running dogs and holding council around a fire. Beaming with pride when his granddaughter raced. He was a man with a deep love of the outdoors. An avid hunter, he took annual trips to Newfoundland and served his family his (painfully spicy) moose chili, never quite perfecting a recipe- or making the same version twice. If the venison was running low, he'd substitute for "hamburg" but his story of the hunt would remain unchanged. Lee fished, and loved a good summer day that he could sit in his leaky rowboat with a grandkid and a bluegill on the line. He found delight in nature and in sharing it. Creating hunting and fishing memories, especially through the eyes of his grandkids and/or their friends (yes, he would take whoever was available, his own or not) was his true North and occupied the majority of his daily thoughts. He always wore a dirty fishing hat and an old button-up collared shirt with paint-stained Levi jeans and smelled like sunshine and leather. Unless he went to town, then he'd smell like bar soap and Old Spice and don his "town hat". He grew a massive garden, canned tomatoes, dried peppers, and boiled maple syrup. He walked his country block picking up litter, scoured the woods for mushrooms, chopped wood, raised chickens, and loved fried green tomatoes. He avoided mustard and rhubarb pie, always had ice cream, and added salt to everything. He saved coffee cans and peanut butter jars, boxes, and buckets. He was left-handed and wrote letters, the ink was often smeared as he pushed his words through the previously penned lines. He signed his notes "Love, Grandpa." He said, "holy cats" when he was surprised, and swatted dogs and flies with a rolled-up newspaper. He read biographies, journals and magazines and would regale you with summaries of his learnings. He could do trigonometry with a slide rule. He'd problem solve with wedges and pulley-systems. He made popcorn and choked non-stop on the kernels. He'd hum along with "Delta Dawn" playing at a deafening volume. He was a good neighbor, a dependable friend and grandpa to many kids who were not his own. His house was the childhood home to 3 of his granddaughters, he was a refuge in hard times. His endless lessons, grandpa-isms, and very odd fears about things only grandpa would worry about (how long a radio is plugged in, how to store your boots in the summer, when to take the highway vs back roads) will live firmly in the hearts and actions of his daughters and their families. Much like how he constantly elevated Betty Bass long after she was gone through endless tales of his love, the legacy of Lee will live on for generations in the words of his daughters, granddaughters, grandsons, and great-grandchildren. He left them with plenty of stories to tell. Lee Bass lived for his family. The current of his love was strong and constant. It washed over everything. If it's been lived well, closing a life breaks a few hearts. He said no tears. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, his eight siblings, and his grandson-in-law, Travis Robertson. He is survived by his daughters, Pam (John) Barnard and Laurie Hammond; his grandchildren, Charlie (Tina) Barnard, Jennifer (Chris) Barnard, John Jr, Meg (Scott Starr) Robertson; Katie (Evan) Frederick, Annie (Sara) Hammond, and great-grandchildren. Opal was born on February 12, 1923 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Cleo Jesse Beasley and Annie Perkins Beasley. In 1942 she moved from Chandler, Oklahoma to Southern California. While attending business school she met and married George Martin Czarnek. George, Opal and their two young daughters, Judy and Joy moved to Orland, California in 1946. In 1955 another daughter, Janet, was welcomed to the family. Opal, George and Janet also lived in Reno and Sacramento. After George's death in 1999, Opal moved to Chico to be near her family. Opal enjoyed spending time with her family and playing Bingo. She was quite lucky and enjoyed her share of wins. Hormann, Leesburg, Florida; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Borden, LaVon Bassett, Harold Bassett; and two sisters, Helen Sturgis, June Ross. | 52096 | Wilmer Wilson Bassett was educated at Interlaken High School in New York. At the age of 19, he entered Cornell University and took a three year special course. In 1907 he accepted a position as assistant superintendent of the North Florida Pecan Company in Monticello, Florida. After superintending the setting of a 600 acre pecan orchard, Wilmer began business for himself raising nursery stock consisting of pecans, Satsuma oranges and kumquat under the name of "Florida Nurseries". Gradually adding to his acreage, he soon had 740 acres with twelve tenant houses, with an average payroll of 30 hands per day. The nursery was supplemented by a dairy herd of 50 cows and 30 head of young cattle from which milk was sold both retail and wholesale. Democrat and Chronicle Rochester, New York Death Takes W.A. Bassett Interlaken - Wheeler A. Bassett, 86, retired farmer, died Thursday night (February 22, 1945), in his home in West End Avenue, after a short illness. Mr. Bassett was born on July 24, 1858, on a farm south of the village, which has been in the Bassett family since the early part of the nineteenth century. A lifelong resident of this community, Mr. Bassett always took an active part in civic affairs. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary last January. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Agnes M. Thomas Bassett; three sons, Wilmer Bassett, Monticello, Florida; Henry Bassett, Watkins Glen and Corporal Thomas Bassett with the U.S. Army in England; two daughters, Mrs. Earl Wilson, Interlaken, and Mrs. Seward Brooks, Hayts Corners; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Four of his grandsons are with the armed forces overseas. Funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in the home by the Reverend George A. Announcement was made last night by Curry J. Bassett, general manage of the dairy firm, who said the transactions is effective immediately. The Tallahassee operations will be known as Borden?s Bassett Dairies, while the ones in Panama City and Crestview will be known as Boarden?s Dairy. No figures were released as to the purchase price. The sale brings together two names in the dairy food field well known to resident of this area. The Bassett firm has been distributing milk in Tallahassee and vicinity for 31 years. Borden grocery and cheese products have been available in grocery stored throughout this section of Florida for many years. In his announcement Bassett emphasized that the change in ownership will not affect the d airy plant?s operations or products, and that all of its employees will remain in their present positions. September 7, 2022 Carol Loraine Bass, 63, of Wilmington, NC entered peacefully into eternity joining her Savior on September 07, 2022, surrounded by her family and loved ones. Carol was preceded in death by her father Elliott Thomas Bass Jr., her mother Jean Daughtry Pate, her brother Elliott Thomas Bass III, her stepfather WC Pate, and many loving uncles and aunts. She is survived by her aunt Glenda (Gunny) and aunt Ann and many loving cousins. Carol was born on October 23, 1958 and grew up in the small town of Clinton, NC. Her life was truly one marked by infectious joy and an overcoming spirit. To know Carol was to love her. At age 11, she was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. Although debilitating, she never allowed this to prohibit her from an incredible joy-filled and love-filled life. At age 12, Carol?s journey was forever marked by accepting Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She was baptized at Grove Park Baptist Church in Clinton. After overcoming many obstacles along the way, Carol graduated highschool with honors. She pushed on, obtaining both an impressive undergraduate degree in Social Work and a Masters of Arts degree in Counseling. Although some told her it was impossible, Carol did it anyway. She credited her success to the Lord and to the many loving friends and family members who supported her. ?Miss Bass? triumphed on to work as a most beloved Counselor at Blair Elementary School in Wilmington, NC for nearly 32 years. She was cherished by students, parents, faculty/staff, friends and family. Carol was an incredibly loyal member of Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church (MGPC) for 37 years. Carol will be deeply missed and yet always remembered in the countless lives she touched that will echo throughout eternity. Her passing was truly our great loss and her exceedingly great gain. May we all find comfort in the many good lessons that her life taught us. We are all better for having known her. What a true gift. May we be comforted by the indescribably good gift of her Salvation who promises us that she will never again experience even the slightest pain or sorrow. Carol always wished to be rid of her wheelchair and arthritis- well that day has come! May she run, leap, dance and twirl with her Savior for all of eternity?some even say possibly wearing those high heels she wanted. A journal entry from Carol reads, ?My greatest interests are knowing Christ, serving Christ and feeding His sheep. Allowing kids to hear the gospel and see Jesus through me- although not always perfect I freely admit.? May we all hear the words Carol hears, ?Well done my good and faithful servant.? Bass, widow of Kilby Bass, formerly of Kenansville, N.C., but for the last 9 years of her life a resident of Washington county, Texas. Thus, while in the early bloom of life, a kind and pious mother, a lovely and affectionate sister, and and obliging friend and neighbor has been removed from our midst, and we earnestly hope carried to that haven of rest where pain and affliction are felt no more; for, having been an exemplary member of the Baptist Church for the last 10 or 12 years of her life, we mourn not as those who have no hope, for we sincerely believe that she was a Christian on earth and now an Angel in Heaven. The deceased was, for the last 3 years of her life, laboring under that fatal disease, consumption, and for the last 6 months of that period continued to her bed; but being a Christian-hearted woman, she bore her sickness with the greatest fortitude and patience ? never uttering a word of complaint. Although he being young, felt it his duty to forsake father and mother and all that is near to man at home and to go and obey his country?s call to meet the invading foe, and to contend for his rights and privielges. He entered service two years ago in this month (May) where he continued faithful at his post until the Gettysburg fight, where he was unfortunately captured by the enemy and carried to Fort Delaware where he was kept for about seven months, then carried to Point Lookouit and continued until he was attacked with pneumonia, which terminated his existence in this unfriendly world, on the 7th of March, 1864. Thus has fallen a patriotic youth, a friend to his country and dutiful son. Although it is painful to our hearts to think he was called away while in the hands of his enemy, where there was no friends, father nor mother to console him in all his troubles and afflictions. But the Lord?s will must be done and not ours, therefore we bow in humble admission to his will, believing that our loss is his eternal gaijn. We believe that he obeyed that Divine injunction to Remember his Creator in the days of his youth. In October, 1860, he connected himself with the Baptist Church at Beaverdam, duplin County, N.C., and lived the life of a Christian, so far as we know, until death took him to rest from all his sufferings. On the morning of the resurrection he will arise triumphant over al lhis enemies with a body fashioned like unto the glorious body of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, then to enjoy that rest that is prepared for the people of God.
