| 52101 | Wilmington Morning Star North Carolina Wednesday, June 23, 1943 Bass - Downs Wedding Held Clinton, June 22 - Salemburg Baptist Church was the scene of a pretty June wedding Friday afternoon when Miss Sara Catherine Downs, daughter of Prof. and Mrs. Posey E. Downs of Pineland College became the bride of the Reverend Burnice G. Bass, of Clinton. The church was decorated with white candles and tall baskets of gladioli and Queen Anne’s lace, looped with white ribbon, which also marked the seats reserved near the altar. Before the ceremony Mrs. D.M. Royal at the organ, played McDowell’s “To a Wild Rose,†and the “Andante†movement from Beethovens Fifth Symphony, and Edward Chou, of Chungking, Szechwan province, China, and Bowman Gray school of medicine sang “Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms†and “If God Left Only Youâ€. As the bridal party entered, Mrs. Royal played Victor Herbert’s “Oh, Sweet Mystery of Lifeâ€, and the “Bridal Chorus†from Lohengrin. During the ceremony she sofly played “Liebestraum†and for the recessional, Mendelssohn’s “Wedding Marchâ€. The bride was given in marriage by her mother. The ceremony was read by the bride’s father, a Baptist minister; and the bride’s sister, Eloise, also a graduate of Pineland College, was maid-of-honor. A younger sister, Miriam and Mrs. Crotia Bass Warren, Pineland College, were her bridesmaids. Crafton Bass, brother of the bridegroom was best man, and the Reverend Douglas Aldrich, Raleigh, and Cartell Jackson, Roseboro, were ushers. The bridesmaids wore pink and blue organdy. The bride was dressed in white slipper satin with long fitted bodice, full flowing skirt, three-quarter sleeves, net fingertip veil held by a halo of gardenia buds. She wore a necklace of pearls and carried a bouquet of white roses showered with stephanotis. For her going-away, the bride wore a gown of light-blue summer material with navy accessories, while her corsage was fashioned from the roses in the heart of her bouquet. Mrs. Bass, a honor student at Pineland College, later attended Meredith College where she made an excellent record. After taking post graduate courses at Wake Forest, she joined the faculty of Lexington high school where she taught English and Bible for two years. The bridegroom is the son of Lonnie D. Bass. He is a recent graduate of Wake Forest College where he was pledged to Delta Kappa Alpha ministerial students’ honorary fraternity. He is pastor of churches in Sampson and Vance counties. In September the couple will enter the Southern Baptist Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, for further study. Following a brief honeymoon they will be at home for the summer in Townesville. Following the wedding a reception was held in the parlors of Pineland College for the bridal party and a large number of guests. Bass Jr., 36, of 646 Linden, Greenfield, died at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at his residence. He had been ill two days. Born June 18, 1926 in Wilmington, he was the son of Booker T. and Lula Sims Bass. His parents survived along with a daughter, Charon, a son, Booker T. III, and sister, Mrs. Betty Washington, Cleveland. He was a World War II veteran, a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Greenfield, and was employed at Wright-Patterson AFB. His wife, the former Evelyn Lynch, died Aug. 7, 1961. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Strueve funeral home, Greenfield, with the Rev. B. W. Phillips, Columbus, officiating. He died peacefully at his residence after several years of declining health. He was born on October 3, 1927 in Seagate, NC, the son of the late James Lee Bass and Bettie Faison Sandlin Bass. Also remembered is his wife of 57 years, Cherry Nell Grooms Bass, son-in-law, Fred Smith; and six brothers, James, G. P., Duvall, Percy, Norwood and Norman; and a sister, Catherine Bass Cooper, preceded him in death. Surviving are three children, Betty Bass Taylor and husband Steve of Kannapolis, NC, Joyce Bass Smith of Wilmington, and Barbara Bass Curtis and husband James of Belville, IL; five grandchildren, Matt Litaker, Casey Litaker and wife Christina, Jenna Lee Smith, Jamie Curtis Murphy, Jacob Curtis and wife Melanie; four great-grandchildren, Jordan Anderson, Alice and James Curtis, and Barbara Grace Murphy. One brother Alton Bass and one sister-in-law Alma Bass Wishon. Lee was veteran of the US Army, having served from December 18, 1945 to July 19, 1947. After an honorable discharge he returned home to marry Cherry, the love of his life. They moved to Charlotte where they raised their daughters, worked, loved and lived for fifty years. Upon retiring, Lee and Cherry moved to Wilmington, NC. A funeral will be held at 11:00 AM Friday July 5, 2019 at Andrews Valley Chapel on College Road. | 52107 | Wilmington Star-News, North Carolina, October 6, 2019 Mary Elizabeth ?Betty? Bass (Picture included) Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Bass passed away on October 1st, 2019 at the age of 94. She was born September 13, 1925 in Maggie Valley, NC to Wylma Campbell and John W. Phelps, being the oldest of 4 children. Upon graduation from high school, she worked in a civil service position as a check writer for the Army Fifth Corp Area Finance Department in Columbus, Ohio. At the beginning of WWII, Betty enrolled in the Cadet Nursing Program and received her training at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC, where she became a registered nurse. She later taught in the Licensed Practical Nurses School at Cape Fear Community College. Then, after furthering her education, Betty became a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. She saw duty in several hospitals throughout her career including Haywood Community Hospital in Waynesville, NC, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington, NC and SurgCare Hospital, also in Wilmington. She finally retired from the profession she loved at age 82. Among her other loves were her Bichon Frise Dinah, dancing, making stained glass figures, and reading. Betty was also a long-time member of St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church, Wilmington. Preceding her in death were her parents, her beloved husband Robert D. Bass, her daughter-in-law Nancy Case, brother Robert W. Phelps and his wife Dorothy, and an infant brother. She is survived by her sister, Jane Beaver of Maggie Valley, NC and four children: Robert Case of Raleigh, NC, Linda Case of Leland, NC, Jack Case of Maggie Valley, NC, and Billy Case of Maggie Valley, NC. Other survivors include: two grandsons, Willie Case, Waynesville, NC, and Jeremy Case, Maggie Valley, NC, and a granddaughter, Michele Quick of Sanford, FL, multiple nieces and nephews and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by special people in her life: Pam Halsall, Karen Case, and Luna Godwin. The family would like to thank the Eldercare staff and aides as well as the staff at Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their excellent care and support. | 52109 | Wilson ? Little ? Purcell Orville Wendell Bass July 12, 1934 ? April 10, 2023 Orville Wendell Bass, age 88 of Wanette, crossed the Jordan River on Monday, April 10, 2023. He was born July 12, 1934 in Piedmont, OK to Oania Lloyd Bass and Retta Mae (Lairson) Bass. Orville answered the call to service and joined the United States Marine Corp, and proudly served his country during the Korean War. By chance, he met a young lady named Roberta Nadine Ross. He was home on leave, and she was working at Veazy?s drug store when they were introduced by his sister, and the rest as they say is history. Orville and Nadine were married on January 14, 1956 in Okla. City. At this time, Orville worked as a Policeman for the City of Oklahoma City. By 1966, they purchased a farm near Wanette. Together they raised two children, son Cliff and daughter Kay. Orville drove a truck for many years. He retired from Texas Oklahoma Express (TOX) after more than 27 years of dedicated service. Orville?s heart was always on the farm, and loved tractor time, building fence, and believed any day on the farm was a good day. He enjoyed working with wood, and even took some carpentry classes to hone his skills. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed shooting targets and clay pigeons. He purchased some reloading equipment and began loading shells. Orville?s greatest legacy was his faith, and he served the Lord wholeheartedly as a member of the First Baptist Church in Wanette where he served as Deacon, and in many other capacities. He was a wonderful father and grandfather and a true friend. He will be dearly missed! He was preceded in death by: his wife, Nadine Bass; his parents, Oania and Retta Mae Bass; siblings Cecil Bass, Lola Mae Dodgen, Frances Clinedinst, Anna Kessler, Oania Bass Jr, Lloyd Bass, Elvin Bass and Velma Schroder. Orville is survived by: son, Cliff Bass and wife Gina of Wanette; daughter Kay Hamilton and husband David of Norman; Grandchildren, Ryan Hamilton and wife Ashley, Jeffrey Hamilton and wife Christine, Cody Bass, Laura Reed and husband Chris and Caleb Bass and wife Paige; Great grandchildren, Alexis, Charlotte Lee, Rowan, Caroline, Knox, Kate, Lucy, Dottie, Callum, Marigold, Margo and Arlo and a host of other family and friends. Her ?favorite grandson? was by her side in her final moments. Dru is survived by her beloved brothers, Johnny Shiver and Norman Shiver; her grandchildren, Jeremy Bass and Michelle Bass; and her cherished great-grandchild, Evelyn Bass. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. A true force to be reckoned with, Dru?s grit and determination inspired everyone who knew her. Where others saw roadblocks, she made a way. With limited means but limitless will, she built a home that welcomed all?a safe haven filled with warmth, love, and the aroma of shared meals. Whether it was a simple grilled cheese or a full-course dinner, countless memories were made around her table. Dru worked for many years at Dollar General, and outside of work, she poured her heart into her home and her beloved flower beds. Her life was a testament to perseverance, faith, and quiet strength. She worshiped God with joy, danced through the hard times, and lived with love and purpose. Though she lived simply, Dru impacted lives profoundly. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew her, and in the countless stories of love, laughter, and resilience she leaves behind. | 52118 | Wilson Funeral Home Virginia Catherine Bass June 11, 1940 ? October 11, 2021 OKLAHOMA CITY Virginia Catherine (?Kay?) Porta Bass died on Monday, October 11, 2021. Born in Oklahoma City on June 11, 1940, Kay graduated from El Reno High School in 1958 and attended Monticello College and University of Oklahoma where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In 1960, she married her high school and college sweetheart, James (?Jim?) Bass. They spent the first two years of married life at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis while Jim finished his service in the Army. Their first child, Ginny, was born in Indianapolis. A few weeks later, the family returned to Oklahoma so Jim could start law school. In 1966, they made their home in El Reno and welcomed their son, Michael. Setting up family life, Kay spent her time with her friends, family, and community. From playing golf on Thursday mornings at El Reno County Club and Mobile Meals with Jane Ratliff to selling Doncaster clothes and traveling the world with Jim and friends, Kay enjoyed the good life. Later they made the move to Oak Tree to be nearer their favorite pastime - golf. In 2004, they moved to Lake Aluma where they delighted in its beauty and the close-knit community. Their photo albums were filled with pictures, many with golf club in one hand and a glass of wine in the other, from Africa, St. Andrew?s in Scotland, to Tucson and an Alaskan cruise. Of her many organizations, Kay was very active in PEO (Chapters M and CK), Athenaeum, El Reno Arts Festival, Oklahoma Humanities Council, El Reno Public School Foundation, and weekly mahjong games at Oak Tree. A parishioner of Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, El Reno, then All Souls' Episcopal Church of Oklahoma City, Kay was also a Pink Lady volunteer at Parkview Hospital in El Reno and a member of the Oklahoma County Bar Auxiliary, Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club and Tucson National. Kay is survived by her daughter, Ginny Bass Carl of Oklahoma City, her husband, Peter Carl, and children, Collin Groves of Houston, and Rachael Groves of Oklahoma City; and son, Michael Bass of Oklahoma City, his wife, Paige, and children, Sam and Sarah Cate. Kay is also survived by her sister, Carol Kleinhoff of Eufaula, AL, her husband, Bill Kleinhoff, and children, Barbara Balkcom of Fishers, IN, her husband, Lee, and children, Lee Junior, Virginia Frances, and Elouise, and Billy Kleinhoff of Dunwoody, GA., his wife Lindsay, and children Abby and Ellie. He was born on October 1, 1937, in Lucama. Gerald was the youngest of nine children born to Isaac and Bessie Bass. Gerald proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as an air traffic controller stationed in Korea. Following his military service, he built a long and respected career with Carolina Telephone, where he worked for 36 years. A faithful member of Springhill Presbyterian Church and an active member of the Lucama Masonic Lodge, Gerald valued faith, service, and community throughout his life. To know Gerald was to know someone who could make or build almost anything. He had a gift for working with his hands and took great pride in caring for his yard and tending flowers. Some of his happiest memories were made with family and friends on the water. Gerald loved fishing, boating, and trips to the coast, and he was almost always the one behind the wheel of the boat. Gerald was known for his wit and his loyalty. He treasured time with his brothers and sisters and found great joy whenever they were all together. Above all, Gerald cherished his family. He is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Clark (Dewey) of Nashville; granddaughter, Blakely Rollins (Jackson) of Bailey; grandson, Nicholas Clark of Wanchese; and great-grandchildren, Levi and Charlotte Rollins, who brought him tremendous joy. He adored Levi and Charlotte and looked forward to every visit. He also dearly loved Josie, the family dachshund, who brought him comfort, companionship, and always put a smile on his face. One of her greatest joys and fulfillments was simply pouring out her love on children of all ages. Her compassionate heart for kids knew no bounds and her joy around children was contagious. She had a special way of connecting with them, bringing smiles and warmth to their hearts. Her nurturing spirit touched the lives of countless children. While all of these things brought her joy, nothing compared to the love and devotion she had for her daughter, Leah. Bassett, Warrenville, at 6:15 Friday night of pneumonia. He had been sick a week but was in bed only two days. Mr. Bassett was a native of Bristol, this state, son of Zadock and Hannah (Bassett) Bassett. He lived the greater portion of his life in Bristol where he was employed in shops. About nine years ago he went to Warrenville where he made his home with his son. September 24, 2020 Betty Jean Bassett, age 93, of Knoxville, Iowa, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2020 at West Ridge Specialty Care in Knoxville, Iowa. Betty was born on October 31, 1926 to John and Florence (Wohlwend) Hoover in Elkhart, Polk County, Iowa. She attended country school in Bremer County until her 10th year when she was called to work on the farm after her two older brothers left for the service during WWII. She also cared for her invalid mother and through letter writing for her, to the son of family friends, she met her future husband, who was serving in the Navy. Betty and John C. Bassett were united in marriage on August 31, 1944 in Waterloo, Iowa and were blessed with seven children. They enjoyed 46 years of marriage before John passed away July 9, 1991. Betty was a great homemaker and worked hard raising seven kids while John was an over the road truck driver on long delivery trips. She was an excellent cook and baker. It was many a day we would come home from school and smell the wonderful meal she prepared for the evening, beginning with homemade bread. She also made sure we all graduated. Her greatest joy was always her family and she loved the big gatherings that were held throughout the years. February 3, 2023 Delores Marie (Bassett) Cowman was born on September 18, 1948 to John Clarence and Betty Jean (Hoover) Bassett. Delores was the second of the Bassett?s seven children. She graduated from Van Meter High School with the class of 1966. Delores was united in marriage to Carl Lee Busch and to this union 3 daughters were born. Darbie Lynn, Amanda Marie and Jodie Jon, they later divorced. Delores met the love of her life, Gary Raymond Cowman, through mutual friends and were united in marriage on April 15, 1988 after 13 years of being together. Following high school Delores entered the work field working for Farm Bureau and Employer?s Mutual Insurance companies before being hired by Knoxville Water Works on May 9, 1977. She retired after nearly 30 years of employment on January 26, 2007. She also served as a reserve police officer for the Knoxville Police Department for several years. Delores and Gary were nearly inseparable and loved to visit with friends at coffee time, breakfast, or dinner at Mr. C?s, Beulah?s Café, Downtown Diner or Manny?s. They spent many nights at Prairie Meadows where she loved to play KENO, they spent hours sitting at the kitchen table, watching westerns, doing scratch offs or visiting with whichever kids or grandkids may have stopped by. They also loved to travel to Las Vegas to visit their Vegas Family, Fabian and Giselle and their children, grandchildren and extended family. She was an amazing cook and loved to have family dinners. Her greatest joy was her family, most especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their events. Delores was the most caring, unconditional loving, hard-working lady loved by so many in our community and beyond. We take comfort knowing she was welcomed to heaven by those who preceded her in death. Her daughter, Amanda Johnson, parents, John and Betty Bassett, sister Marlene Alcorn, sisters in law Dale Marie Bassett, Linda Cowman and Vera Sparks, brothers in law Richard Houge and Richard Sparks along with a host of extended family members and friends. She graduated from Van Meter High School with the class of 1964. Marlene was united in marriage to Larry Wayne Alcorn on December 30, 1965, and to this union 3 children were born. Daniel Wayne, Victoria Michelle, and Matthew David. Following high school Marlene attended and graduated from American Institute of Business (AIB) in Des Moines with an Administrative Assistant Certificate and later in life returned to AIB and achieved a certificate in Hospitality. Marlene held various jobs over the years, spending several years at Pella Corporation, served as the Director of the Senior Meals program for Marion County, Geetings Warehouse and Jacobson Trucking Corporation. Marlene was an avid reader, and enjoyed watching classic movies, Big Bang Theory, Supernatural and Jeopardy. She crocheted and knitted beautiful afghans for all of the kids and grandkids. She spent hours researching family history and genealogy and creating a database full of information on the Bassett, Loynachan, Hoover, and Alcorn families. However, Marlene?s greatest passion in life were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Spending time with them brought her the greatest joy, even arranging her work schedule to be able to care for Vicki?s children while Vicki worked. She never missed any of their events and always went with Vicki and her family on every family vacation. Some of them were even geared to her interests, such as the trip to Graceland, the Black Hills, and Deadwood in South Dakota and to Germany and Virginia to visit Dan and his family. Marlene was called home to be with the Lord on January 3, 2023, with Vicki, Dan and Tori by her side. She passed peacefully with Elvis? How Great Thou Art playing in the background. Our loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend returned to his heavenly home on March 11, 2019. He passed away peacefully in West Jordan, Utah. He spent the last days of his life surrounded by his loving and devoted posterity. Art was born on June 13, 1932, in Broken Bow, Nebraska, to Edith Opal Life and Joseph Irenus Bassett. He was the fifth of seven children. His family moved to Idaho in 1945, where he attended Jr. High and High School. In 1951, Art joined the Air National Guard and was stationed in Salt Lake City, Utah, and then Clovis, New Mexico. He was honorably discharged from the Reserves in 1954. Art worked for several dairy companies between 1955 and 1962 before entering the sales industry. He sold life insurance for the majority of his career and enjoyed meeting and helping people. Art met his life-long sweetheart, Anna May Wright, in Salt Lake City, and they were married on October 31, 1951. In 1952, Art was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints; and in 1955, he and Anna May were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. He was an active and devoted member of the church, and served faithfully in many callings throughout his life. Art demonstrated kindness, patience, and love to all those with whom he associated. He and Anna May spent the majority of their married life living in Southern California raising their nine children. Art and Anna May loved to travel to visit family. They attended most of their grandchildren?s baby blessings, baptisms, high school graduations, and weddings. They loved their children and grandchildren and great grandchildren and cared deeply for each of them. Art was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Anna May; his parents, Joseph and Opal Bassett; his siblings, Betty West, Claudice Bassett, Ken Bassett, and Richard Bassett; daughter-in-law, Janet Siebenthal Bassett; and grandson, Stuart Hardy. He is survived by his five sons and four daughters, Kathryn Hardy, Arthur Jr. (Jalene) Bassett, Douglas (Nedra) Bassett, Christie Bassett, Steven (Jackie) Bassett, Ronald (Jacquie) Bassett, David (Vonda) Bassett, Diane (Sol) Sagiao, Julie (Robert) Glover; forty-one grandchildren; forty great grandchildren; his sisters Bonnie Corle and Julia Rauh.
