| 52152 | WINKS, MARY JANE nee AMON Mary Jane Amon was born on the 3 August 1849 at Mortlake, Surrey, England, the daughter of Thomas and Priscilla Amon nee Bassett. The Amon family came to New Zealand about 1856 and settled near Scotts Ferry, at the mouth of the Rangitikei River. On the 18 September 1871, Mary Jane married John Alexander Winks at Parewanui, and their first days of married life were spent driving 24 calves of Mary Jane's to their new home in Hawera, more than 80 miles away. The Maoris of Rangitikei had always been friendly with the Europeans, but in Taranaki there had been hostility for some time, and Mary Jane was very apprehensive, expecting "brown forms to spring from behind every flax and toitoi bush along the route" until the sight of the Hawera blockhouse "filled her with infinite relief". Their first child , James, was born there (site of Welsh McCarthy) in 1873. The couple's first home was in High Street, (now the site of the ANZ Bank) and John built a two-storeyed home here, with an outside staircase leading to the upper living quarters from their baker and butchery business. John rode into the bush to buy cattle from the Maoris, as well as advising them concerning their problems and attending to any mail they wished to have written. Meanwhile Mary Jane, still apprehensive of Maoris, served in the shop on her own, fleeing on one occasion when confronted by two large tattooed men. When Mary Jane's ninth child was born in 1887, the old chief Hukanui Manaia, a great friend of John's, wished the baby to be named after him. At least 12 Maori women sat on the lawn with gifts, awaiting the birth, sure it was a boy, and after much persuasion, the baby was named Walter Manaia Winks. In 1884, the family moved to Victoria Street opposite the Catholic Church, and in 1893, the family, now with 11 children, moved to a large property at Normanby, building "The Falls" homestead. The problem of clothing 12 children, six of them girls, was overcome by installing a dressmaker twice a year for a period of three months. The materials were bought during a large shopping session in Hawera, and then the dressmaker arrived to begin on the underclothing, working through to frocks with frills and buttons. Mary Jane had strong views concerning the consumption of alcohol, and with her neighbour Belinda, wife of Francis Job Gane, campaigned for prohibition in the late 1890s. C. Glisson officiating. Burial was in Olla Cemetery under direction of Riser and Son, Columbia. Bass died at 2:30 a.m. Friday, February 3, 1984, in his home. He was a member of Olla Church of God, a veteran of World War II, and produce manager at the Highway Supermarket. Survivors include his wife, Ernie Bass of Olla, three daughters, Janet Haley of Covington, Donna Hall of Jena, and Sharon Oalmann of Olla; three brothers, Bill Bass of Transylvania, and Archie Bass and Henry Bass, both of Oak Grove; three sisters, Fannie Tyson of Oak Grove, Arline Barnhill of Georgetown, and Viola King of Spokane, Washington, and six grandchildren. | Bass, Jasper (I53476)

| 52154 | Winnipeg Free Press, April 8, 2006 Marion Eva Smith Taylor (Picture included) MARRION EVA SMITH TAYLOR (nee Bassett) August 6, 1909 - April 1, 2006 It is with sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on April 1, 2006 at Calvary Place, Winnipeg, MB at the age of 96. Marrion was predeceased by her husband David in 1975, son Donald in 1965 and daughter Davina at birth; her parents, Harriett and Adelbert Bassett; and brother Robert Bassett. Surviving are her daughter Evelyn (Gary) Evans; granddaughters, Leslie (Mike) MacCorby, Linda (Guy) Phillips, Laurie (Darrell) Carriere and Lorna (Ken) Blue all of Winnipeg; great-grandchildren, Marissa and Matthew MacCorby, Emma and Sarah Phillips, Ryland and Kyle Carriere and Elijah Blue. Also very special to Mom were her nieces and nephews. Marrion was born in Dartmouth, NS and moved to Winnipeg as a young child with her family. Marrion attended Lord Roberts and Kelvin High School. Upon graduation she went to work as a secretary. In 1933 she married David Taylor. Until Dad's passing they enjoyed and shared 42 years together. Mom was very active in St. Alban's and St. Patrick's Anglican Churches. Music played a large part in Mom's life. She was an accomplished pianist and accompanied Dad when he sang his many Scottish favourites. Mom and Dad enjoyed travelling, especially their trip to England and Scotland. Bowling, playing bridge and bingo and doing word puzzles were Mom's favourite pastimes. Over the years Mom enjoyed her precious moments with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. These times became more precious and cherished during her latter stay at Calvary Place. The family would like to thank the staff from Calvary Place for their caring support over the years. Mom was very grateful for their kindness and compassion. A memorial service will be held at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave. (entrance on Aubrey Street), Winnipeg, at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11. She fought a short, but courageous, battle with cancer. Janet was predeceased by her mom, Jean. She is survived by her father, Gus Laliberte, husband Doug; brother Larry (Lucy); sisters, Connie (Charlie) and Corinne (Allan); niece Lindsay (Michael); nephews, Lance (Kim), Nick, Parker and Cody; and grandnephew Bryson. Janet was born on April 17, 1956 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She grew up and resided in St. Vital all her life. She graduated from Dakota Collegiate and completed certificates in Business Accountancy and Business Administration from Red River Community College. Janet put as much effort and dedication into her family and job as she put into the sport of curling. The family cottage was one of her most cherished places since childhood. In later years, she took great pleasure in making sure that her niece and nephews enjoyed the same experiences. Janet was always interested with the kids schooling, sports and their life. Janet worked for Shoppers Drug Mart for 35 years and retired in May 2016. Over the years she became an invaluable employee as she earned the trust and respect of all the store associates and staff. She has contributed to the sport of curling as a competitor, coach, instructor, volunteer, club president and mentor coach. Along with her curling successes she also received many accolades as a coach. A celebration of Janet's life will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2:00 p.m., at Canad Inns, 1824 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg. Charles Wendell was born July 11, 1943, in Rochester, MN, to Wendell and Lorraine (Mathen) Bass. He married Barbara J. Schaefer on July 10, 1965, in Afton, MN. Chuck was the owner and founder of Mec-Pro Manufacturing in Winona, which he started in 1975, and where he took great pride in engineering and building customized machinery for the grain malting and fiberglass composite industries. Chuck is survived by his wife, Barbara, three sons: Matthew (Angela) Bass, Byron, MN, Michael (Charlot) Bass, Lakeville, MN, and Daniel Bass, Goodview, MN, five grandchildren: Hannah, Emily, Megan, Jennifer, and Shawn, his mother, Lorraine Bass, Rochester, MN, two sisters: Julie (David) Bass-Haugen, St. Paul, MN, and Debra (Jay) Fotland, Rochester, MN, two brothers: John (Mary Jo) Bass, Rochester, MN, and Roger Bass, Rochester, MN, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father. Chuck was fond of saying, "The happiest people are the curious dreamers," and he lived that philosophy by pursuing many of his passions during his short life. He was born May 29, 1954, in Grapevine, Texas. He attended Grapevine High School and immediately went to work at B&D Mills of Grapevine after graduation. Doug will be remembered as a man of few words with a heart of gold. He enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, hunting, and working in the yard. Doug was married to the love of his life and his best friend, Marie Bass, for 37 years before her passing. He loved almost everything Texan from fried catfish to homemade barbeque, and western movies to the Dallas Cowboys. Doug enjoyed helping his son with home projects and working on cars and motorcycles. Doug was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Bass; mother, Lavada Buckner; father, Elvin Buckner; and sister, Sherri Cardona. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Joe McWethy and the Rev. Philip Wagoner. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory. Mrs. Hauser was born March 28, 1911, in Davie County, the daughter of Bennett and Mattie Caudle Bassett. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 41 years of service and served as a volunteer at Forsyth Medical Center for many years. She was a member of Walkertown First Baptist Church. | 52163 | Winston-Salem Journal February 9, 2006 Dr. Golden Bassett Wall (Includes Picture) Dr. Golden Bassett Wall departed this life on Sunday, February 5, 2006, at Oakdale Heights in Winston-Salem. She was born October 25, 1921, in Winston-Salem, the daughter of the Reverend Daniel B. Bassett and Brownie A. Bassett. Dr. Wall attended the public schools of Winston-Salem and was an honor graduate of Winston-Salem State University. She earned a master's degree from New York University and a Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University (Carbondale). Her love and enthusiasm for teaching, which began in the classroom and continued throughout her career, led her to an assignment as an elementary school principal in Thomasville. In 1966, she joined the faculty of Winston-Salem State University. She became director of Student Teaching and proudly served in that position until her retirement in 1985. Her various honors include the award for Outstanding Teacher of Thomasville City Schools, president of the North Carolina Association of Teacher Educators, President and campus adviser for Phi Delta Kappa and the award for Excellence in Teaching at WSSU. She was also an evaluator of education programs for the State of North Carolina and for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Dr. Wall was an active supporter of her community including social organizations, the Winston-Salem State Alumni Association and Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church, where she was a faithful member for over 35 years. In addition to her parents, Dr. Wall was preceded in death by her brother, Daniel B. Bassett Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of 53 years, Grover C. Wall; her dear brother, Jethro B. Bassett (Vera); adoring nieces Jean B. Fenwick (Victor), Linda D. Askew (Alphonso), Angela Bassett Vance (Courtney), Dannette Bassett and Lisa Carter; great-nieces and great-nephews Robin and Jonathan Fenwick and Brian, Elise and Alexandria Askew, Slater and Bronwyn Vance; and a host of other family members and friends. He was born Dec. 5, 1926, in Forsyth County to the late Will and Effie Williams Bassett and he spent most of his life in Winston-Salem. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He was a self-employed decorator. He fought a courageous battle with cancer. Surviving are his wife, Flora "Flo" Ball Bassett, of the home; a special daughter, Deborah Boles of Dallas, Texas; two sister, Roy Grandy of Winston-Salem and Doris Levengood of Wallburg; a wonderful mother-in-law, Mrs. Eva Ball of Winston-Salem; and aunt, Mrs. Virginia Bassett, who was a great inspiration; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 .m. today, Oct. 23, at Oaklawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Harold Bassett and the Rev. Dale Hancock officiating. A special thank-you is extended to his twin nieces, who visited and called each day, and to his great-niece, Kristin, whose visits brought him great joy. January 4, 2023 Mrs. Ninette Dillinger Bass, 81, passed away in her home on Wednesday under Wellness Hospice care. She was born on July 23, 1941 to Leroy and Jewell Miles. She attended Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools. She was a member of Pleasant Union Progressive Primitive Baptist Church, where she was the mother of the church. Ninette loved her church family and loved to cook for church functions. She also enjoyed thrift shopping, gardening, and interior decorating. She was committed to charitable works by always helping those in need and giving to her community, family and friends. Ninette was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Larry Junior Bass. She is survived by two daughters Judy Hauser and Michelle Carter; four sons: Keith (Tammy) Miles, Timothy Miles, Wesley (Carol Lee) Hauser, and Rodney Hauser; 5 grandchildren;12 great-grandchildren; two sisters Juenelle Sawyer Cuthbertson and Vivian Cunningham and one brother Lee Miles; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; her best friends Mary and Gene Peterson, and Helen Porter; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Wesley Bassett; a granddaughter, Ronda Bassett; and a great-grandson, John Curtis Bassett. Frances Vaughan Exum, the wife of Wyatt Patrick Exum III and the mother of Patricia Exum Bassett, died on Monday, Jan. 2, 2006. She was 87 years old. Mrs. Exum was born in Martinsville, Va., on July 14, 1918, as the older daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bunyan Charles Vaughan. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Galax, Va., where Mr. Vaughn founded Vaughan-Bassett Furniture CO. Two years later, Frances? sister, Margaret, was born. Mrs. Exum was a graduate of Chatham Hall School and Hollins College, where she majored in music. She married Lt. Wyatt Patrick Exum III, an Air Force pilot, on Oct. 25, 1941, just six weeks before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. She would spend much of the next four years living at her parents? home on Stuart Drive in Galax while Wyatt fought in World War II. Wyatt and Frances? daughter, Pat, was born n September 1942. The family lived in Galax after the war, eventually moving to their home on Country Club Lane, Wyatt was the executive vice president and sales manager at Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co. until his death in 1983. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co., Vaughan Furniture Co. and American Mirror Co. She also served on the first building board of Twin County Memorial Hospital and Hollins College Alumnae Board. For many years, Mrs. Exum was a member of First Baptist Church of Galax, where she served as a member of the Women?s Missionary unon and as superintendent of the Primary Department Sunday school. She later joined Wyatt as a member of First United Methodist Church of Galax. Frances Exum was a lifelong musician and gardener, an avid and accomplished bridge player, a lover of literature, a gracious hostess and a proud, loving and supportive daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Vaughan; her beloved sister, Margaret Vaughan Higgins; and her husband, Wyatt Patrick Exum III. She is survived by her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Bassett III, of Roaring Gap. Her grandchildren are Doug Bassett and his wife, Ellen, of Winston-Salem, Wyatt Bassett and his wife, Bartlett, of Winston-Salem and Fran Poole and her husband, Ashton, of New York City. She has nine-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her nieces, Becky Higgins Dorshorst of Tulsa, Okla, and Peggy Higgins Rhodes of Arlignton, Va. He is survived by a brother, Lloyd M. Bass of Clemmons and sisters Jennifer Bass Daniel of Lexington and Stephanie Bass of Winston-Salem. He was born in Winston-Salem May 29, 1959 to John Dallas and Lois K. Bass. He graduated from Parkland High School in 1977. He and his siblings attended Southside Baptist Church while growing up. Nathan was always proud of growing up on the Southside of Winston and proud of the working families in his neighborhood. His father instilled a strong work ethic at an early age, teaching him to lay tile and giving him the workload of a man when he was still a teenager. Nathan became a skilled boilermaker and pipefitter. He believed in treating and paying workers fairly, in maintaining safe working conditions and saw effective unions as essential to those goals. Before retirement in 2022 he worked as a pipefitter journeyman for Fabco Industries at the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant in Waynesboro, GA. He belonged to UA Local 421 for approximately 20 years before his death. In his personal life he overcame drug and alcohol addiction with the help of local 12-step recovery groups and was clean and sober from July 13, 1992 until his death-31 years. Like his father Nathan was a good cook. Wherever he lived one would spot a grill or a smoker outside his home, and especially on weekends the fragrance of well-cooked food would surround the place. A memorial gathering will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., December 30, 2023 at Trinity Moravian Church, 220 E. Sprague St., Winston-Salem. Cremation services are provided by Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home. Although Lessie Bass, 18 or 20 year old girl, died in a hospital here more than eight months ago, from blood poisoning, caused it is alleged, by an attempted illegal operation, the arrest of her sister, Beulah Bass Marlette, East Burlington woman, was not made until a few days ago. The latter is being held in the county jail at Graham, without bail charged with murder in connection with her sister?s death. The death bed statement of the young girl is said to have mentioned the name of her sisters as the one whose hand was used the rude instrument that is alleged to have caused the infection. She was preceded in death by her husband, Denson Gray Hauser; her son, Denson Gray Hauser Jr.; and her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Janice Hauser-Wilson, and her husband, David, of Winston-Salem; a brother, Milton Bass of Kernersville; and two grandchildren, Betsy Hauser and Denson G. Hauser III. Bass IV, 56, a native of Herkimer, NY passed away unexpectedly into the hands of our Lord on March 10, 2012 in Pensacola, FL. Everett was born in Little Falls, NY on September 1, 1955 to Everett J. Bass III and Ruth L. (Busch) Bass. Everett was of the Christian faith and one of his joys was relaying Bible stories and reciting scripture. He shared a special bond with his mother, Ruth. They were true friends. The only bond closer to him was his bond with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He attended Herkimer schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army enlisting in November, 1972 with an honorable discharge in November, 1974. Shortly after getting out of the military he worked at Remington Arms in Ilion, NY. Several years later he worked in management in the restaurant business. He also enjoyed working on the family dairy farm. Everett was very talented and creative as shown in his many beautiful drawings and pastel works. His penchant for eloquent writing was evident in the many cards, poems and letters written to family members over the years. He was a gifted freelance writer with his work being published in a national magazine. He had a passion for traveling to new places and gained many new friends along his journeys. His hobbies included practicing piano and singing old gospel hymns. He enjoyed life and was very much a free spirit. For a period of ten years William Bassett has given an efficient administration of the duties of clerk of circuit court in Forest county, and since the organization of the county the records and administration of that office have never been in better hands. Mr. Bassett, like so many citizens of this section of the state, had his early experiences in the lumbering district, and was for several years connected with one of the factories in Crandon. Besides his county office, Mr. Bassett has recently been honored with election as mayor of Crandon, being now in his first term in that office. He has been clerk of the circuit court since 1903. His home has been at Crandon since 1899, in which year he came from Lower Michigan, and throughout practically all his residence in Crandon he has been engaged in the insurance and real estate business. William Bassett was born at Ithaca, Gratiot county, Michigan, December 5, 1871, a son of Bryon L. and Belle Bassett. During his boyhood days in this county he received a public school education, and his first regular employment was in a stave and heading mill at Ithaca. He acquired a knowledge of all the details of this industry, and it was his experience in that line which gave him his first opening at Crandon. He became foreman for the Williams' Mills Stave Heading Factory there, and held that position until he entered office as clerk of the circuit court. He served two years as deputy clerk before his eelction to the regular office. In 1895 Mr. Bassett married Lillian Shorey, of Saginaw, Michigan. They are the parents of two children, Roy and Mildred. Mr. Bassett is very popular in the local citizenship of Crandon and Forest counties, and takes much part in fraternal work, being affiliated with the Knights of Pythias, the Modern Woodmen of American, and the Equitable Fraternal Union, and the Order of Yeomen. | Bassett, William (I45)

He was under the care of Ministry Home Care Hospice. Floyd was born on Nov. 5, 1925 in Jackson. He was the son of the late Raymond and Grace Davis Bass. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Navy during the Pacific Campaign. His marriage to Shirley Caine took place on Oct. 18, 1947. She died on March 20, 1998. Floyd worked as an engraver/pressman for the Racine Journal Times. He retired in 1988. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing softball, traveling and handy work. His faith guided his decisions, strengthened him through challenges, and shaped the kindness and compassion he showed to others. Mark also possessed an incredibly creative mind and entrepreneurial spirit.
