| 551 | The Virginia-Pilot, Norfolk, Virginia, Monday, October 14, 1996 Earl Bass Chief Earl 'Running Deer' Bass, 87, of the 3400 block of Galberry Road, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 1996, in his residence. A native of Chesapeake, he was the son of the late Jesse L. and Carrie Anderson Bass and was the widower of Lucille E. Bass. He was retired as a machinist in Shop 31 of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 31 years and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Indiana United Methodist Church, Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge (NU)178, Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies, Khedive Shrine Temple, Woodman of the World and president of Yadkin Hunt Club in Chesapeake. He had been chief of the Nansemond Indian Tribe since 1960. Survivors include four daughters, Clara Land of Portsmouth, Peggy Hatton of Swell, N.J., Carrie Collins of Mobile, Ala., and Sandra Garner of Chesapeake; two sons, Joe Bass and Bobby Bass, both of Chesapeake; a sister, Gladys Passmore of Fort Mill, N.C.; a brother, Leonard Bass of Roanoke; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Indiana United Methodist Church by the Rev. Larry Brinkley. Burial will be in the Bass Family Cemetery in Chesapeake. (Bailey) Wagner Bassett, 70, of Angola, Indiana, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Northern Lakes Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Angola, Indiana, where she received wonderful care during her time spent there. Betsy was born on Sept. 20, 1953, in Angola, Indiana, to Al Bailey and Rosemary (Able) Bailey Ross. She graduated from Angola High School and received her Bachelor of Business degree from Indiana University. Betsy was a paralegal for several major corporations, often traveling around the world for business. She married Larry Bassett on Nov. 29, 2014. Betsy was a philanthropist and supported and loved her community. She was a member of Psi Iota Xi. Betsy loved her dogs. Among her favorite breeds were Leonberger and Bouvier des Flandres. Most of all she loved spending time with Larry and her family. She enjoyed taking rides on the pontoon with family and her two dogs, going to the Sea Plane Fly In's at Pokagon State Park and going to Balloons Aloft in Angola, where she had been a member on a Hot Air Balloon crew to name a few. Surviving are her husband, Larry Bassett, of Angola, Indiana; son, Dan Wagner, of Iowa; stepdaughters, Brooke (Nathan) Phenicie, of Glenview, Illinois, and Brittany (Tyler) Hartman, of Angola, Indiana; 10 grandchildren; and her brother, Wes (Patti) Bailey, of Rochester, New York. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Steve Wagner; daughter, Jamie Chapoteau; stepson, Brice Bassett; and sister, Kay Rosselot. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at Weicht Funeral Home, Angola, Indiana. Officiating will be John Coney, Minister. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m., on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola, Indiana. | 553 | Winnipeg Free Press, Thursday, October 31, 1935 Weddings Basset-Chavanne The marriage of Marthe, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Chavanne, of St. Boniface, to Mr. Joseph Basset, of Saint Claude, Man., son of Mrs. J. Basset and the late Mr. Basset, of the same place, was solemnized Wednesday at 7.30 a.m. in the sacristy of St. Boniface cathedral. Right Rev. Monsigner W.L. Jubinville celebrated the nuptial mass and the wedding ceremony. The altar was decorated with palms and bouquets of autumn blooms. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a model gown of tropical blue French crepe, made on simple lines, the front panel below the knees showing wide shirring emerging into flares at the hemline. The waistline was belted of the material to finish into a buckle at the front. The softly draped bodice showed a vestee of blue cut velvet spreading into a wide jabot and trimmed with rhinestone buttons. The sleeves were dolman and executed in the cut velvet, to finish into a tight cuff. She wore a small turban of velvet offset with grey accessories. She carried a bouquet of Talisman roses and lilies of the valley. Both bride and bridegroom were unattended. A reception was held at the home of the bride?s parents, Dollard boulevard, St. Boniface. The bride?s table was graced with the lovely wedding cake offset with tall ivory tapers in silver holders. Later Mr. and Mrs. Basset left by motor for Saint Claude, Man., where they will in the future reside. Mrs. Chavanne, mother of the bride, wore an afternoon gown of Manoa brown French crepe, cut on simple lines, with a hat of matching brown felt and brown accessories. Mr. Russell Lee Bass, 91, of Seaboard, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Va. Mr. Bass was born Sept. 7, 1922, in Northampton County, the son of the late Robert Drew Bass and Nannie Long Bass. He was also predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Annie Taylor Bass; and a brother, Waylon Bass. Mr. Bass served his country during World War II as a member of the Army Air Corp. He was a proud veteran and continued his service after the war as a member of the Air Force Reserve. He retired with the rank of captain. He is survived by his children, David Bass and his wife, Patti, of Franklin, Va., Gary Bass and his wife, Gail, of Chester, Va., Robert Bass and his wife, Lynda, of Wilmington and Jennifer Bass Bolton and her husband, Pat, also of Wilmington; his brother, Robert D. Bass Jr. of Portland, Maine; his sister, Ruth Bass Downing of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, which is handling the arrangements, with the Rev. Jim Cox officiating. Bassett) From a newsboy selling The Plain Dealer in the streets of Loudonville, O., to the head of nineteen different business enterprises, all within twenty-five years, is the record made by Ira S. Bassett of Pittsburg. Mr. Bassett had said that he owes much of his business success to the start and training he received selling The Plain Dealer. He used to meet the train that brought The Plain Dealer to Loudonville and, with papers under his arm, hustled through the town, earning his first ?bank roll?. ?It was a pleasure as well as good business to sell The Plain Dealer,? said Mr. Bassett, ?for the paper was such superiority in point of news and make up that it really sold itself. I sold so many of them that I was able to save money and finally get started for Pittsburg.? Mr. Bassett has little to say of his success since coming to Pittsburg. He does not have to say anything. The fact is that he has become the chief executive of the Ira S. Bassett interests and nineteen various businesses. His first trip back into the Cleveland district, after launching on the road to success in Pittsburg, was as traffic manager of the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce. Later he made the trip as commissioner of the Pittsburg Commercial Club, which aggressive and progressive organization he founded practically alone. In all his worldly success he has not forgotten his duty toward God. He gives more than one tenth, much more, each year, of his income. Many are the churches, charities and philanthropies that he has aided, although little is publicly known of his benefactions. The only rescue mission in the state of Pennsylvania, exclusively for the down-and-out negro, has been supported almost entirely by him. Nor is it money alone that he gives to God?s work. Considerable of his time he devotes to ?doing his bit?, as he calls the duty, in behalf of the church. Although he never misses a day as his desk, he devotes many a night to preaching the gospel, not only Sunday nights, but week day nights. Not many months ago a campaign against vice was planned by Woodlawn, Pa., a town located in the Pittsburg district. Mr. Bassett responded to the demand that he lead the fight. A tabernacle was built and there, every night, he preached. Then Pittsburg wanted him for a similar campaign and a tabernacle was built on Mr. Washington, where he waged war on sin, then going to the North Side, where he preached from the pulpit of the large Manchester church, then to the Avalon-Bellevue district. He started the most unique campaign ever launches in Pittsburg, known as a ?from-the-pew? movement, in which clergymen were conspicuous by being mere spectators, while laymen directed the fight to reclaim men for the church. This campaign was waged in the Oakland district, where most of the student population dwells and where most of the rooming houses exist. He is soon to go to Ohio to take the stump in behalf of a dry state. Many have been the demands from all parts of the nation for his time and services, which he gives without remuneration. But he has found it impossible to go farther away from Pittsburg than a night?s ride, because he has made it a practice to be at his desk daily. More than 1,600 persons attended the Bassett interchurch evangelistic campaign in the tabernacle at Dueber-Hampden grounds Wednesday night when Ira S. Bassett, lay-evangelist, preached on the life of ?Naaman, the Leper.? Wilkes-Barre Times, November 26, 1918 No Bail Furnished For Ira S. Bassett Pittsburgh, Nov. 26 ? No bondsman had appeared to furnish $35,000 bail for Ira S. Bassett and he was still in jail today awaiting grand jury action on charges of consipiracy and fraudulent concealment of assets. Three of his alleged co-workers in the alleged ?blind pool? and evangelistic party, were held under $10,000 bail each by Magistrate Sweeney. Of the millions they are alleged to have collected from willing dupes, only $22 and a broken down automobile have been discovered in the search for assets, it was stated by Attorney James, Sachs, representing the receivers. Evangelist Charged With Concealing $400,000 of Assets (International News Service) PITTSBURG, Pa., Oct. 23 ? Charged with concealing $400,000 of his assets and of conspiracy to defraud, Ira S. Bassett, the businessman evangelist, whose failure a few days ago disclosed that he had hundreds of victims who had loaned money to him for investment, was under police custody today in the St. Francis hospital. According to Attorney Sachs, who is acting for some of Bassett?s clients, the businessman evangelist has liabilities between $3,000,000 and $5,000,000. It is said the number of persons who gave their money to Bassett for investment will number into the thousands. Bassett?s method of conducting business is under close scrutiny. Promising 10 to 20 per cent on loans of money for a few days on the claim that when his promises were made good in the first instance he gained the confidence of his friends and his clients grew rapidly. Bassett (Picture included) Everybody within a radius of 5,000 miles or more of Pittsburgh remembers the famous Trade Tour that was carried to a successful and profitable consummation by Pittsburgh manufacturers not so very long ago. The Trade Tourists on that occasion occupied a train made and equipped in Pittsburgh, and the spaces not occupied by the tourists were filled with products of manufacture that were given out en route. The object was to boost trade in Pittsburgh, and that is exactly what it did. In charge of that tour was Ira S. Bassett, who also first suggested it. He was Traffic Manager of the Chamber of Commerce of Pittsburgh from 1907 to 1913, and has just been appointed Commissioner of the Pittsburgh Commercial Club, where he will have full charge of the workings of that organization. Born in Loudonville, Ohio, March 19, 1874, he entered the services of the Pennsylvania Lines West as telegraph operator at Freedom, Pa., in 1893. He was a traffic manager when he resigned in 1907. Services for Mrs. Jessie Bucy, 66, of Killbuck, who died Sunday in the home after a long illness, will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the residence. Rev. Frank Mitzel will officiate with burial in Killbuck cemetery. Friends may call at the residence tonight. A native of Killbuck twp, Mrs. Bucy was a member of Killbuck Methodist church. Conn to Speak at 75th Anniversary of Killbuck Church (Excerpt) At the afternoon meeting Mrs. Lola Bassett, daughter of the church?s only living charter member, Mrs. Lillie Duncan, will read a historical account of the church. Mrs. Duncan, now 91 years old, who became one of the church?s 20 charter members in 1972 when she was 16 years old, many not be able to attend the celebration, Rev. S.R. Clark, the present pastor said. However, it is expected he will be represented by two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter in addition to Mrs. Bassett. | 560 | 3. Elizabeth Arthur was born in Capel, possibly at Broomals, early in 1823. She and her twin sister were baptized in St. John the Baptist Church in Capel on 16 March, 1823. Elizabeth married David Bassett of Cheam, Surrey (near Ewell) in the spring of 1851. David was born in Cheam about 1825. He was the son of a Bricklayer, Thomas Bassett, and David also became a bricklayer. David and Elizabeth lived in Cheam after their marriage, at first on Cheam Street and then, by 1871, they had moved to High Street where they continued to live for the rest of their lives. In addition to their three children, a boarder, John Pye, also lived with them in 1871. Although Elizabeth was about three years older than David, she apparently told him she was only a year older. It is not known at this time whether William Arthur was related to Mary. He may have been a cousin. This was reflected in her reported age in 1861 and 1871. David Bassett died during the spring of 1879 when he was about forty-six years old. In 1881 Elizabeth still lived on High Street in Cheam. On the day of the 1881 Census her four year old granddaughter, Elizabeth Smith, was staying with her. To help make ends meet Elizabeth had taken in two more boarders in addition to John Pye. John remained a boarder at Elizabeth?s home for at least twenty years and was still living there in 1891. After her husband?s death, Elizabeth admitted to being born in 1823 and reported her age accordingly in 1881 and 1891. Around 1888 Elizabeth?s daughter, Emma?s, husband, Frederick Smith, died and shortly afterward Emma and her five children moved in with Elizabeth where they were living in 1891. Elizabeth Arthur~Bassett passed away late in 1896. Elizabeth Arthur and David Bassett had three children; a. Emma Elizabeth Bassett was born in Cheam, Surrey, in the spring of 1856. Emma married Frederick Smith in Cheam in the spring of 1873 when she was just seventeen. Frederick was born in Mitcham, Surrey (near Wimbledon), around 1850. In 1871 he had lived in Cheam at the house of William Thorns, a butcher, and learned the butcher?s trade. After their marriage, he and Emma lived in Merton, Surrey, not far from Mitcham and Wimbledon. Frederick listed his occupation in the 1881 Census as ?Inn Keeper and Butcher?. Frederick Smith died sometime between the conception of his youngest son in the summer of 1887 and the time of the Census near the end of March, 1901. He may have been the Frederick Smith who died in the last three months of 1888. After Frederick?s death, Emma and her five children moved back to Cheam and lived with Emma?s mother. After her mother?s death in 1896 Emma apparently continued to live in her parents? house. In 1901 she lived on High Street and took in laundry to earn a few shillings. Three of her children and a granddaughter, Evelyn Smith, were living with her at the time of the Census. Emma Bassett and Frederick Smith had five children; i. Frederick Sidney Smith was born in Cheam, Surrey, in the summer of 1873, within six months after his parent?s marriage. ii. Arthur Ernest Smith was born in the summer of 1875 in Cheam. iii. Elizabeth Mary Smith was born in Cheam during the first three months of 1877. iv. Edith Emma Smith was born in the summer of 1879 in Cheam. v. A retired manager of A&P Tea Co., he died at his home Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, after fighting cancer for three years. God sent his angel to tell him, ?Come and I will give you rest.? He was 77 and raised in rural Pike County, Miss. He was an honorably discharged U.S. navy air corps veteran of World War II. Survived by his wife of 53 years, Janie Parsons Bass; daughters, Patti McClelland and spouse Robert, Janie Gaynell Ables and sopuse Windy, Elaine McClure and spouse Terry, and Dana Christine Bass; a son, Mikal Ray Bass and spouse Mary; two sisters, Mildred Moak, McComb, Miss., and Madelon McManus, Clinton. He left 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation was at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation at Baker First Baptist Church, Groom Road, from 2 p.m. until religious services at 4 p.m. Thursday, conducted by the Rev. B.K. Miller. Burial in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Groom Road. Barbara was born April 19, 1949, at Portsmouth, VA to the late Theodore Alden Olcovich, Sr. and Dorothy Ann (Thayer) Olcovich. She was raised primarily in California, residing at Upland, CA, for more than twenty years, while raising her children. Barbara was a wonderful cook and homemaker to her five children. Travelling to many events during her children?s adolescent years. Barbara moved to Ardmore in 2004 and worked as a healthcare provider for Healthcare Innovations. She always loved to read books and look after her cats. She loved all animals and also enjoyed watching sports. | 563 | Anacortes American, September 14, 2022 Virginia Lee Dusenbury Sedro-Woolley - Virginia was born to Walter and Effie Bassett on February 21, 1927, in Montclair, New Jersey. She went to the Lord on August 31, 2022. At the time of her passing she was living at Birchview Memory Care in Sedro-Woolley, WA. Virginia's father was a fruit buyer for a grocery store that later became Safeway. Her mother was a teacher before she married Walter. She loved to read - especially The Harvard Classics. Virginia inherited this propensity and continued to read the classics well into her 90's. Virginia loved to draw, color, and paint from an early age. She and her grade school friends loved to cut out paper dolls and design and paint elaborate outfits for them. She developed a love for music in grade school. She emulated a favorite teacher who taught her to sing in parts. Walter bought a baby grand piano after Effie insisted that Virginia take piano lessons. Virginia enjoyed her piano, it followed her around the USA and presently resides in Anacortes. Even as her health declined, she enjoyed playing her favorite classics. At age 13, she met Bob, age 14, at a barn dance at the Calvary Methodist Church. Bob says: "It was love at first sight." Virginia says: "I asked Bob to go with me on our first date to a roller-skating party." Virginia graduated from Bloomfield High in New Jersey and attended Rutgers University. She moved to Montana and married Bob on September 19, 1946. She completed her college degree in Fine Arts at the University of Montana in Missoula. Paul, their first son, was born in February 1950 and Michael was born in May 1951. In 1955 the family packed up and moved to the farm in Charlo, MT. Virginia baked bread; churned butter; fed the cows, chickens, and sheep; milked the cows, and raised two fun-loving mischievous boys. In December 1965 the family moved to Wolf Point, MT, and Virginia's art career started. She loved the challenge of learning new media - oil, ink, watercolor, pastel, and etching. She preferred painting portraits of family, friends, and other unique characters. She said: "Painting portraits helps you see the beauty in everyone." While living in Flagstaff, Arizona, she painted the features and made the detailed clothing and accessories for the many Hopi Kachinas that Bob carved. She was an avid participant in many art and weaving organizations and held many administrative positions - Fort Peck Theatre Set Designer, Director at Large of Montana Institute of the Arts, Director of Flagstaff Art Center, President of Cedar City National Art Competition, President of Artists Northwest, and President of Whidbey Island Weavers Guild. Her work has been on display in collections around the country including the Guggenheim in New York City. Virginia's watercolor sketch of the old "Curtis Wharf" in Anacortes was chosen for the cover of the 1993 MacGregor's Anacortes/San Juan Island Directory. She was an award winner in many media and taught many workshops and classes in WA, MT, UT, CA, and AZ. Virginia loved teaching art. She taught lessons in her home as well at the Anacortes Senior Center. Many of her students went on to rewarding careers. For many years Virginia and Bob had a booth at the Anacortes Art Festival. He carved fan birds, and she sketched portraits. Virginia was an accomplished weaver and could often be seen wearing her beautiful hand-woven garments. She loved her church, Bible studies, and singing in the choir. Bob always joked "Daddy sang bass" and "Mama sang tenor" - like the Johnny Cash song. Bob and Virginia loved the sea and sailed all over the Puget Sound. They enjoyed sharing the many adventures with their friends and family. Bob and Virginia joined the ELCA Mission Builders and traveled around the U. S. They helped construct 11 churches. Virginia sketched the volunteers at work and left a drawing at the church upon completion of the project. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings - Doris Gidding and Jean Adams. Virginia is survived by her two sons - Paul (Julie) of Anacortes and Michael (Debra) of Billings, MT. Virginia was blessed with five grandchildren - Angela (Ron) Huskey, Heidi (Chris) Dahl, Matt (Yuan Yuan) Dusenbury, Peter (Flavia) Dusenbury, Rena Dusenbury and five great grandchildren - Leah Dahl, Claire and Ellen Huskey, Mia and Ben Dusenbury. Alvin was born January 4, 1936 in rural Marion County and raised in Knoxville, graduating in 1954 from Knoxville High School. While driving truck for his father, he met Shirley and was married December 21, 1958. Shortly thereafter, he was assigned his post in Korea serving in the 103rd Infantry Division. After honorable discharge from the Army, he and Shirley set up housekeeping in Des Moines. During this time, he completed his mechanical electrical engineering degree at Iowa State University graduating in 1972. Throughout his career he was very active with the National Electrical Contractors Association holding multiple positions within the organization. This provided him many opportunities to travel with his family throughout the US. Usually that vacation involved shopping destinations. Alvin retired from Stroh Corporation in 1998. This allowed him more time to enjoy spending time with his grandkids, along with gardening, fishing, hunting for mushrooms or picking berries of which he would make many a pie. His grandkids still won't eat a store-bought pie because Grandpa made the best pies. An avid Cyclone fan, he would also enjoy watching many ISU sporting events and it was a bonus when he spent that time with his grandkids. In his later years he also volunteered as foster grandparents with Shirley for Royal Family Kids Camp. Besides his work, Alvin was faithful in his church First Assembly of God greeting and ushering many through the years. Alvin loved people and always had a story to tell. Throughout his life, he demonstrated his love and faith in God. HIs legacy will be remembered and live out through his grandchildren of which he spent much time with. They all can share the endless stories he would tell them (ask them about the 3-legged chicken or the bar bouncer). She was on the Executive Committee of Christian Women?s Club in the Indianapolis North Chapter and the Business and Professional Women?s Club. Previously, she was a long-time advocate for the disabled, serving as Coordinator of the Putnam County Council on Handicapped Citizens and on the Board of Directors of the Parent Information Resource Center in Indianapolis. Brian is survived by his beloved wife - Susanne; his daughter - Taylor Brianne; his father - Milton G. "Mickey" Bass (Patty); his sisters - Sherri L. Hooper (Jeffrey); Michaela N. Bass (Fiance, Macon). He was predeceased by his mother Barbara L Simmons nee Viands. As soon as Brian and Susanne married, his family grew instantly, gaining many brothers and sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews that he cherished and will never be forgotten. Brian was a selfless hero, a true fighter, an avid sports lover, an inspiring coach, always had a quick wit about him, was the king of one-liners and was a natural born comedian. In his early years, he loved playing football and baseball, hanging with his peppertree boys and being a life guard at his local pool. He briefly attended Montgomery County Community College, where he played football and also played with the Washington Nationals. Soon after, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where his passion for football continued. During his service, he became brothers with many, growing a bond that would last a lifetime - especially his Junk Yard Dogs. While in the service, Brian met the love of his life Susanne, who he would marry only a few years later with a love lasting over 30 years. Brian worked many jobs during his lifetime to include: car lot and gas station attendant, usher/ball boy for the Washington Redskins, a volunteer fire fighter in many states/locations (Hyattstown VFC, Rockville VFC, City of Virginia Beach VFC, Stafford Township VFC, Manahawkin, NJ & Berlin, MD VFC) and an EMT. He sold life insurance and was a tow truck driver. Brian was a stagehand and briefly owned his own landscaping company. He was also a Freemason, a food and florist delivery driver, a county and a school bus driver, coach of many sports: baseball, high school football (Seneca Valley Screaming Eagles, Kellam Knights and Green Run Stallions) and of course, countless hours as Taylor's softball coach for more than 15 years. Brian was the type of father to never miss a single tryout, practice, game, tournament or anything involving supporting his daughter. His most recent jobs that he loved were driving a tractor at Johnson's Farm in Medford, NJ, cooking on his favorite food truck in Pennsylvania and being a ranger/golf cart attendant at Frontiertown Campground in MD. His true passions were his fire career and coaching football & softball. Brian was employed as a federal firefighter, investigator and inspector (NAS Oceana, NOB Norfolk, St. Juliens Creek, Portsmouth Naval Hospital, NJ Forest Fire Service and NWS Earle) where he eventually retired in 2017. During his employment, Brian worked extremely hard to advance his fire fighting career to support his family. He obtained several certifications over many years. One that stands out is that he was trained on the NASA Space Shuttle for Airport Emergencies. Brian enjoyed attending sporting events, celebrating the holidays, spending time with his pup Max, and always making his girls happy. Some things he would always say: "if I could make an impact on just one player, I would feel accomplished", "hard work always pays off " and "give life everything you've got". Some great advice he would say to Taylor "If you're not at least 15 minutes early, you're late", "If you're going to build the house of life, you need to start with a strong foundation" and "Don't dwell on the past, celebrate the future." Mollie earned her early education graduating the Bearden High School, she attended and graduated from the University of Central Arkansas with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Tech. Mollie spent 31 years at the Bradley County Medical Center as Lab director and retired from BCMC. She transitioned to teaching at the South Arkansas Community College for 8 years, and she earned an accredited licensure for ASCP. Mollie was a faithful member and a Christian Children's Church leader at the First Assembly of God Church, she dedicated and devoted her time for 22 years. Also preceding her in death was her brother Irvin Jackson Bass. Bass, 84, the former president and vice chairman of Borg-Warner Corp. in the 1970s, who led the corporation during its conglomerate heyday and also helped make it one of the first American manufacturers to supply parts to the Japanese auto industry in the 1960s, died of complications from several illnesses Thursday, April 25, in Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "He was certainly a product of his era," said Geraldine Fiedler, former vice president of human resources for what is now BorgWarner Inc. and the wife of current BorgWarner chairman and CEO John F. Fiedler. "He was a gentleman, always had a joke and was quick to poke fun at himself and events. But he was also a very sharp businessman." Mr. Bass liked to say he got his start in business, at 17, because his one-time girlfriend's mother didn't like him. As the story went, she persuaded her husband to "hire that kid and get him off my back" because she loathed the idea of seeing him lurk around their house for another summer. The girlfriend's father owned Eberhardt-Denver Co. Though Mr. Bass' relationship with the young woman never took off, he remained with the company for the rest of his career. It was bought by Borg-Warner's Morse Chain Division in 1956. He later became president of the division, living in Ithaca, N.Y., then Chicago, while holding a number of executive posts until his election as a director of the corporation in 1973. He served as president of the corporation from 1975 to 1979. He became corporate vice chairman in 1979, when Borg-Warner's interests ranged from air conditioning to chemicals and industrial parts. He retired in 1982 before an era of mergers, acquisitions and leveraged buyouts pruned BorgWarner to its current form as a specialist in manufacturing automotive components. Throughout his career, Mr. Bass prided himself on a thorough knowledge of materials production born of his early work on a factory floor. "Bob used to say he still had chips on his shoes--meaning he was walking on the factory floor and picked up steel chips on his soles," said Ron Ruzic, an executive vice president at BorgWarner and group president of its Morse Tec subsidiary. "He started from the bottom up and really understood the process." Along the way, he took night classes and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Denver in 1941. The same year he married the former Isabelle Cantrell, whom he had met in college. When Mr. Bass retired, it was to a summer home he and his wife had long kept in Evergreen, Colo., where Mr. Bass filled his days with fly-fishing above 10,000 feet, his wife said. But she added that they kept a home in Chicago, where Mr. Bass remained a life trustee of the Field Museum and chairman of the BorgWarner Foundation until 1992. He was 84. Bass spent 48 years with Borg-Warner, which manufactures vehicle power-train applications, including four years as president of its Morse Chain division. He retired in 1982. Bass was born in Denver on June 15, 1917. He received a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Denver. His real passion was fly-fishing. Bass and his wife, Isabelle, owned a summer house in the Evergreen area, where he kept a small smoker for the trout he caught on the Wigwam Club property. The Basses served the silky smoked fish at cocktail parties. "His smoked fish was so good," his wife said. "I've never had smoked fish as good as his. I can buy some here in Chicago that they smoke up in Wisconsin, but it's so dry and hard." Bass also was a generous contributor to the Colorado Nature Conservancy and to the Field Museum in Chicago, where he was a trustee. His vast collection of Navajo rugs, including at least one from each Navajo tribe, is being donated to the museum. She ran a day care business for 7 years and then finished up as a service consultant for 25 years at the former Corson Cadillac in Hyannis, MA. She firmly believed in volunteering, serving at times as president of the Cape Cod council of Camp Fire, financial secretary of the First Baptist Church, first aid instructor for the Red Cross and President of the Sam?s Rough Riders, a camping group. She loved camping, being outdoors, cooking and baking treats for her friends and family. She also loved animals, especially her German Shepherd, Chrissy. She spent her spare time reading, doing word puzzles and working jigsaw puzzles with her great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her sister Linda Worth and her brother Richard Worth. | 583 | Courier Press, January22, 2021 William Henry Freeman (Pictures included) 1932 ? 2021 Newburgh - William Henry Freeman, 88, of Newburgh, previously of Owensboro, Ky., and Evansville, passed away peacefully at home on January 13, 2021. Mr. Freeman was born April 11, 1932, to William A. and Mary F. (Bassett) Freeman, at their Independence Avenue home in Owensboro. He graduated from Owensboro Senior High School in 1950. He married his sweetheart, Ruby Jeanette Husk, on April 21, 1952. They initially met in the first grade, but his family moved after that year and he attended another school until they met again in junior high band when he played trombone and she played clarinet. They later attended Owensboro Senior High together for two years before she transferred to the county high school for junior and senior years. He went on to attend Western Kentucky State Teachers College before entering the United States Air Force on January 5, 1951. He began writing letters to Ruby, she wrote back, and after some hesitancy on her part, they started dating and fell in love. During his service, he served as an electronics and radio instructor. He felt fortunate that he was able to stay close to home, based at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, and easily found ways to make trips home to see Ruby and his nearby family and friends. He achieved the rank Airman-First Class, receiving the Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged January 5, 1955. Upon returning home to Owensboro, he was briefly employed by the General Electric company, before becoming a field engineer with International Business Machines (IBM) working out of their local office and making calls working on computers and learning about technology as it constantly changed. The family had the opportunity for some extended trips to Minnesota and New York due to his work, which was full of some interesting times, but they were happy to come home. He was fascinated how computers have changed over time from being the size of a bedroom to fitting in his pocket as a smartphone that now has more memory than any of those large machines of the past. He and Ruby welcomed a daughter, Suzanne, on February 15, 1959. They moved to Evansville in 1960 and resided there until moving to Newburgh and building a new home in 1972. He retired from IBM in 1989 after the birth of their grandson, Jake. They remained in Newburgh for the remainder of his life but kept up with Evansville, being just next door, and frequently, sometimes weekly until recent years, visiting family in Owensboro. He enjoyed the time he and Ruby got to spend with their daughter and also babysitting their grandson as he grew up. They spent a lot of time traveling often to Owensboro, caring for her parents and aunt, and his mother. Until recent years, his many interests included Kentucky Wildcats basketball, which everyone knows is best enjoyed by muting the telecast and listening to the radio broadcast. Additionally, he liked keeping up with current events by spending multiple hours watching CNN and reading the newspaper, including Peanuts and Close to Home on the comics page. He also kept tinkering with technology after retirement. From fixing the sewing machine to sharpening scissors (correctly, because his father was a barber, and he knew scissors should be sharp), he never got bored. He bought his first home computer in 2001 and discovered how to keep up with IBM retirees through internet groups. Of course, he also experienced the adventures of testing out his farming skills with the once-popular Farmville application, but was glad to reconnect with old friends and keep up with current friends through Facebook, especially trading photos studying Freeman, Bassett, and Husk genealogy. An avid reader, Mr. Freeman kept hundreds of mystery novels accessible on his Kindle and Nook, as well as in print. (His grandson, a librarian, will be cataloging these books for a long time.) He was happy to pass on his love of reading to his daughter and grandson. His love of older music was evident, as well as old radio shows. He appreciated pipe organ music, southern gospel, and big band tunes, as well as anything classic country or anything instrumental. His experience playing the trombone led him to investigate other instruments, including the banjo. His grandson picked up the trombone and played it proudly in honor of his grandfather in middle and high school. As of late, especially while spending more time at home, he enjoyed a good crime drama or outdoor adventure on television, especially Chicago P.D., Blue Bloods, Life Below Zero, and even some exciting British dramas and comedies like Agatha Raisin and Doc Martin. A soft spot for animals, he also tuned in to vet programs like Dr. Jeff and Dr. Pol from time to time. He greatly enjoyed hometown foods, especially from Moonlite and Old Hickory. He would do anything for anyone, and we will miss him forever. May 30, 2025 Douglas Richard Bass, lovingly known as "Papa", passed away peacefully at home on May 30, 2025, at the age of 70, surrounded by the love of his devoted family. Many years ago Doug lost a kidney while helping assist his co-workers. He later developed kidney disease and endured years of dialysis, both outpatient and at home. He also underwent a liver transplant in 2021. So, needless to say, Doug was one tough cookie. Through all this, his wife Paula never left his side, nor did his sons and many grandchildren, all of whom, he loved so very much. Doug was born on November 2, 1954, to the late Delbert and Frances (McMannamy) Bass. A 1973 graduate of Clay High School, Doug built a life defined by hard work, love, and dedication to others. On Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 1978, he married the love of his life, Paula (Baron), in Long Beach, California. Their marriage of 46 years was a shining example of commitment, love, and family values. Doug worked for General Dynamics in California before moving back to Toledo in 1979, where he dedicated 34 years to Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital (NOPH Hospital). Doug is survived by his loving wife, Paula; his sons, Dylan (Denise), Phillip (Nicki), and Corey (Jennifer); his grandchildren, Ava Jane Bass, Jesah Bass, Dain Bass, Foster Bass, Aniston Bass, and Bianca (Jet) Blackburn; and his great-grandson, Shepard Blackburn. He is also survived by his sister Roxanna Logsdon, his brother Walter E. "Butch" Bass, brothers-in-law Glen V. | 586 | Custer County Republican, Broken Bow, Nebraska, Thursday, 19 June 1913 Mrs. Tabitha Vickers Mrs. Tabitha Vickers was born in Gibson county, Indiana, December 6, 1829 and died in Custer county, June 15, 1913, aged 84 years 6 months and 9 days. She was married to Daniel Holcomb in 1846. To this union were born seven children of which four died in infancy. In 1861 she was married to Robert Skelton. Four children were born to this union all died in infancy but one. She leaves two brothers and one sister to mourn her loss: J.W. Skelton of Los Angeles, California; W.A. Skelton of Milburn and Lucinda Holcomb of Seattle, Washington. In 1871 she was married to Granderson Vickers. She was united in with the Baptist church when quite young and lived in that faith until her death. In 1882 they moved to Nebraska, and shortly afterward they organized a church of the same faith and order. The members most all moved away and then in 1891 she united with the missionary Baptist church. She was a charter member of both organizations. She was always a cheerful giver to all good causes. She leaves one stepdaughter, 18 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her loss. | Tabitha (I51)

While growing up, he returned to spend the summers at Mountain View with his grandparents. John drove a truck for over 30 years before starting his own truck line, Bass Trucking. He also raised cattle in Jackson County. He was a member of Northside Church of Christ. John enjoyed racing in the hobby stock division at area racetracks. He liked to spend time working on his car, #74. He spent time hunting with his bow for deer and he enjoyed watching Gunsmoke with Linda. He was very close with his grandchildren and he loved his family very much. John married Linda Nocktonick on Friday, October 13, 1978 in Topeka. Linda survives at their Topeka home. Other survivors include his daughter, Tara Bass of Topeka; grandchildren, Auzure, Amara and JonMichael; two sisters also survive, Debbie Espinoza and Tammie Espinoza, both of Topeka. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ronnie Bass and sister, Terrie Miller. John was cremated. In his spare time, Sam enjoyed fishing, woodworking, doing yardwork, and raising tomatoes. He enjoyed watching sports, especially OU football, New York Yankees baseball, and the Denver Broncos. February 22, 2021 Wayne Arthur Bass, 64 of Elko, our long time Brother, Friend and Loved One passed away peacefully in his home after a long battle with cancer on the morning of February 22, at 2:45 AM. He was preceded in death by his Father, Arthur F Bass, his Mother, Donna Massie-Bass, and a son, Dillon Bass. Wayne is survived by his brothers, Jerry & Renee Parker (Southern Pines, NC) and Greg & Lynette Parker Wendover), a son James Nagel (Culver City, CA), cousins DeeDee (Anderson) Swanson (Zephyr Cove) & Brett Anderson (Ely), and the many Brothers & Sisters whose lives he touched over the years. Wayne was born and raised in Elko. His career path took him to Idaho, California, and he ultimately landed in Carson City where he lived and worked at Home Depot- a job he loved! Then came the cancer diagnosis. After a six-month battle, aided by his devoted cousin Dee Dee, Wayne decided to move home to Elko where his lifetime Brother, Greg Martin, was his primary caretaker till his last breath. Wayne possessed an endearing passion for music and was well known as an accomplished harmonica and percussions player. Wayne played locally with the band, Nature's Way, and the Lamoille Canyon Band. Wayne often was an invited guest to many a stage of various bands playing across Northern Nevada. In fact, he was actually invited to play with Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac at her home in Sacramento! Wayne loved the outdoors and especially loved fishing at the Ruby Marshes, where he was able to enjoy a few last fishing trips this past August with his two brothers, Greg Martin & Greg Parker. No services are planned at this time, however, a wake will follow late spring or early summer! Wayne's family deeply appreciates Greg Martin's many months of being Wayne's primary caregiver. His sacrifices and devotion to Wayne is a testament to their Brotherhood. And many thanks to Billie Jean Crawford and Deborah Thompson at Horizon Hospice. Born on February 18th, 1927 Betty was an only child where she grew up in North Birmingham and graduated with honors from Phillips High School at the age of 16. At the age of 18 Betty married the love of her life, Samuel Thompson in 1945. They started a family and Betty was a devoted wife and dedicated mother to 3 children (Jackie, Robert and Lee). As a beloved and active member of her community, Betty was truly humbled when she was awarded the Citizen Of The Year Award in 1962 by the Gardendale Chamber Of Commerce. She worked as the registrar at Mortimer Jordan High School until her retirement in addition to helping her beloved husband Samuel Thompson in starting Oak Wood Cemetery. One of Betty's passion's in life was gardening. Regarded as a well respected member of the gardening community, Betty served as the President of the Garden Club, was a Master Flower Show Judge and was the proud recipient on multiple occasions of the Gardendale Yard Of The Month Award. Known as an avid world traveler, Betty accounted Paris as her favorite city. Betty was a longtime member of Gardendale Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church.
