He is survived by his wife Janet Bass of Columbus, GA, daughter Suzanne Bass Ivey (Tim) of Phenix City, AL, son Roy S. | 652 | Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home ? Brandon ? 23 October 2024 LaVerna Bassett LaVerna Jean Bassett, 81, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2024, at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She was born in North Ferrisburgh, April 2, 1943, the daughter of Lawrence Harley and Effie Leola (Carpenter) Vincent. She grew up in Addison on the family farm. She worked as a machine operator for Metro Mail of Rutland for 25 years and at Maple Meadow Farm in Salisbury for 30 years before retiring in 2020. LaVerna loved nature, including camping, hiking, and snowshoeing, and enjoyed working in her flower gardens. She also loved all kinds of animals, especially hummingbirds. She is survived by her beloved husband of 37 years, Richard; her children, Foster Provencher and his wife Linda of Salisbury; Lawrence Provencher and his wife Heather of Weybridge; and Shelby Provencher and her wife Heather of Columbia, South Carolina; and a brother, Ronald Vincent of Addison. She also is survived by grandchildren Michael Provencher, Tyler Provencher (Britney), and Krisandra Provencher, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Alva "Buck" Vincent. A private graveside service and interment took place at the Evergreen Cemetery, Pittsford. July 29, 2022 A loving, dedicated husband, father, and family man, George Council Bass, Jr. 78 died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on July 29, 2022, in Fairfax County, Virginia. He had waged a valiant fight against Agent Orange induced leukemia. George was born December 3, 1943, in Memphis, Tennessee to the late George Council Bass, Sr. and Eva Louise Moore Bass. George grew up in the Orange Mound where the Bass family was one of the original founders of the community. He graduated Melrose High School in 1961. At Melrose, he was captain in the National Defense Cadet Corps and a member of the yearbook staff. He earned a scholarship to LeMoyne College where he majored in mathematics. In 1964, George joined the United State Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War. During the War, he was wounded in battle and awarded the Purple Heart. George earned the rank of Sargent and received an honorable discharge in 1967. In 1966, he married Juanita Gardner, his best friend from 1st grade through college. Each wedding anniversary, they told the story of their getting married while he was still in a full body cast, recovering from his injuries in the Vietnam. Following his service as a Marine, George worked with Pacific Finance Company (TransAmerica) as the first Black Regional Finance manager. He, then, worked for Spector Redball Trucking where he was the first Black Regional Dispatcher. George joined the United States Postal Service and retired from the Memphis Bulk Mail Center as an IT Supervisor in 2012. George accepted Christ into his heart at his family?s church, Christ Temple Church of Christ Holiness USA at the age of 12 under the guidance of his Uncle Clee. As a young man, he was a member of Stephens Baptist Church, his mother?s church. Until his death, George was a member of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church where he co-developed with his wife Juanita a Sunday School class (Love Manifested) for special needs members. He participated in the church choir as a baritone for over 15 years. Reading the Bible and talking to his family about God?s saving mercy brought joy to him. Through the years he had many interests: George loved fishing and could stay on the lake all day. He was also an avid Sci-Fi fan. He enjoyed the Dune Book Series and later the Star Trek movie/series franchise. He was a member of a CB radio club where his handle was ?Bigwheel?. He also relished in a good political debate. George is survived by his wife of 55 years, Juanita, 3 daughters Andrea Lynne Bass, Karen Elizabeth Bass-McFadden (Randolph), and Allyson Denise Bass McCollum (Michael). He has 4 grandchildren: Elaine Lynne and Darius Calvin McFadden, Athnee? Charlisa McCollum and Matthew Langston-Bass McCollum; 2 great-grandchildren, Madison Sophia Lasane and Abre O?Shea Marshall. He is also survived by sisters Erma Bass Fitzgerald, (James), Georgia Riley Turner (Quincy) Deborah Riley Young (Foster), and brother Joseph Riley (Doris). He was preceded in death by sisters Dareatha Bass Scott-Wilkinson, Rose Bass Phillips, brother Larry Riley and niece Rosetta Renee Bass-Brown. George was a father figure to nieces Pamilla Scott, Shelbye Scott Turnage (Raymond), and nephews Ronald Scott (Vickey), Eric Scott, and Alex Scott. He is also survived by his aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews from the Moore and Bass families. Juanita and George?s girls thank their Memphis friends and neighbors and their new-found Virginia neighbors and friends who have been a source of comfort as they prepare for a different life. They are sustained by that support and strengthened through the grace of having known George and been loved by him. Glenn enjoyed fishing, hunting, was an avid Cowboys fan, loved welding, playing softball and basketball and was very stubborn. November 5, 2024 Of Statenville, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born on August 17, 1954, in Valdosta, Georgia, to the late James Earl Bass and Lillian (Deloach) Barfield. Ricky dedicated many years of service as a mechanic at Valdosta State University, where he was well-respected for his skills and work ethic. A true outdoorsman, he was known for his love of working in the yard. His family referred to him as a ?Workaholic?. In his downtime, Ricky had a variety of hobbies that brought him joy. He was a fan of classic ?Westerns,? with Gunsmoke being a particular favorite. His love of sports also ran deep, especially when it came to watching football and cheering on the Atlanta Braves. Ricky enjoyed the thrill of finding treasures at flea markets and yard sales. Above all, Ricky was a devoted family man. He cherished the time spent with his loved ones and was known for his kindness, loyalty, and his ability to bring people together. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of hard work, dedication, and love for those he held dear. Ricky will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Along with his father, he is preceded in death by his stepfather, Jack Barfield; his sister-in-law, Jo Bass and his brother-in-law, Wayne Barfield. Walter is survived by his daughter Carol Bassett (Allen Cloer), his son Frank Bassett (Lori Bassett), his daughter Janet Tighe, his grandchildren Dr Danielle Tighe, David Nash - Pappas, (Margaret Nash-Pappas), Ben Pappas, Tiffani Stump (Paige Stump), Dr. Olivia Tighe, Josh Brunza (April Brunza), and Shannon Tighe. He is also survived by several siblings including his brother John Bassett (Pat), and his sisters Phyllis Coombs, Linda Anderson, Cynthia (Dave Wildowski), Barbara (Jeff Bitgood), Sheryl (Steve Shea), as well as several nieces and nephews, and his longtime friend Lucinda Swanson. Walter was a Marine, Beloved Father, Friend, and Grandfather. He had an infectious sense of humor, and people loved him. In his younger years he played baseball and was a ringer on several teams in the Boston area. Later he went on to coach baseball. He needed to stay busy. Whether he was building a tree house for his grandsons, or climbing up on the roof at the age of 85 to make repairs after a hurricane, he was on the move. He worked as a tool and die maker, machinist, he owned an auto body shop, B's Auto Body, he worked at Polaroid, and he retired from Georgia Pacific at the age of 78. He could fix anything, and he was generous with his skills and time. He loved animals, and over the years, he owned numerous thoroughbred race horses. He always had biscuits for the neighborhood dogs, and was always available to help out a neighbor. He was one of ten children born to the late John E. and Ruth E.(Franklin) Bassett of Connecticut. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty Bassett, brother Richard, sister Ruth (Schaefer), brothers-in-law Raymond Anderson and Richard Coombs, and grandson Timothy Tighe. A family celebration of his life will be 12/11/2023 at the Naugle Funeral Home from 11:00 - 12:30 all are invited. Military funeral will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 2:00 PM. She was born in Santa Rosa County, FL on August 24, 1927, to Holley and Jessie Bass. Eula was a member of First Baptist Church of Baker. She loved to garden, and loved to travel with Glenn and Gloria. Eula helped Glenn on the family farm and help him with anything that needed to be done. Most of all she loved her family, she loved to garden, loved to cook what she planted and loved to serve what she cooked to her family and friends. Eula loved to take care of people and her gift was making people feel special. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers: Marlin, James Verlin, and her baby brother Dewey Bass and his sister Florine Wallace. Her husband Glenn Dotson preceded her in death. Survivors include her daughter Gloria Dotson, who was the apple of her eye; brother in laws: Jerry Dotson and wife Bobbie and Dale Dotson and his wife Victoria; sister in laws: Charlotte Bass and Jollie Carver. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Backus Hospital, Norwich. He was born August 20, 1932 in Plainfield a son of the late Ernest and Yvonne (Lavallee) Bessette and had resided in Lisbon for the past 25 years. He was employed by the former Norwich State Hospital for 25 years, retiring in 1984. Mr. Bessette was a member of Ponemah Council #34 K of C and a communicant of St. Augustine Church, Canterbury. He was the first Eagle Scout in the Plainfield Troop in 1948 and had also been awarded three Eagle Palms. Mr. Bessette was a man of many talents and virtues. He was an avid bird watcher, loved carpentry, working on his computer and had taught his grandchildren to play chess. Besides his wife he leaves two sons, Michael and Lona Bessette of Norwich, Brian Bessette and Dawn of Lisbon. two daughters and sons in law Sandra and Walter Thoma of Norwich, Suzzette and David Costanzo of Canterbury. Bassett of Andover RD, died Thursday (Oct. 5, 1972) at Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville, after a long illness. Born at Independence, Oct. 27, 1889, he was a son of Henry and Esther Austin Bassett. On June 26, 1912, he was married to the former Ella Langworthy, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Willis (Barbara) Jewett Jr. of Detroit, Mich.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Mr. Bassett had been a lifelong member of the Independence Seventh-day Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer. Friends may call at the Wildman Funeral Home, Whitesville, Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services Monday (Oct. 9, 1972) at 1 p.m. will be conducted by the Rev. Bessette, 69, of 1206 Locust St., Owensboro, died Friday, April 8, 1994, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Louisville. He was born in Brattleboro, Vt.; was employed in manufacturing and engineering at General Electric Co. in Syracuse, N.Y., and Daytona Beach, Fla., before retiring; and was a member of Painters Local No. 156 in Evansville and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 696, American Legion Post No. 9 and AMVETS Post No. 75, all in Owensboro. He was a Navy veteran and served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater during World War II as a gunner's aviation radioman 2nd class with Patrol Bomber Squadron No. 22. Survivors include his wife, Linda F. Bessette; five sons, David Bessette, Wayne Bessette and Gary Bessette, all of Daytona Beach, and Rusty Pannett and Scott Pannett, both of Tell City, Ind.; three daughters, Cheryl Altman of Vidalia, Ga., Sandy Jones of Tell City and Lisa Corley of Lewisport; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Lev Bessette of Orange, Mass.; and two sisters, Virgil Widney and Beatrice Lewis, both of Rutland, Vt. He will be cremated and his ashes scattered at sea from a U.S. Navy vessel. A monument dedication will be held at a later date in Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville. | 664 | Palmyra Enterprise, August 23, 1906 Isaac Newton Turner Isaac N. Turner was born in Mass., July 17, 18925. When he was four years old his father moved to Geneva, Ohio where Isaac grew and was employed on the lakes as a sailor. On Aug. 5, 1951 he married Lucinda E. Wood of Geneva. In 1854 he came with his family to Palmyra where he worked on the railroad and at the shoemaker trade. In 1858 he moved to Missouri where he resided until the outbreak of the Civil war. He went to serve in the war and his family returned to Palmyra. In 1880 he moved to Baraboo where he was employed by the Northwestern Railroad. During his residence in Baraboo his wife died (1889). In 1901 he went to the Wis. Veteran?s Home in Waupaca where he died Aug. 8, 1906. Two children were born to them, Asaph Hiram of Milwaukee and Lucy T. Bassett of Baraboo. He was born on November 6, 1949 in Hamilton, the son of the late CJ and Bernice Bassett. Robert was a loving father and proud grandfather. He is survived by his children: Sheree (Christian) Steinmann, Amy (Michael) Forrester, Joseph (Ashley) Bassett, Ashley (Michael) DelVecchio, Angel Bassett; his beloved and cherished grandchildren: Kassidy, Spencer, Hailey, Kaiden, Benny, Anthony, and Kyler; as well as an eagerly awaited great granddaughter. Robert is further survived by his beloved four legged companion, Bailey. One of twelve children, he also leaves behind one brother and several sisters; many nieces and nephews; and close friends. Whether he was making his rounds around the neighborhood or tinkering with his lawn mowers; Robert was happiest behind the wheel of his golf cart. Lawrence spent most of his life working in construction and was known for the exceptional quality of his work, driven by a sharp eye for detail and a commitment to doing things the right way. He could be a bit stubborn at times, but that same determination was part of what made him who he was. He also spent several years volunteering with the wrestling program at Clarke County High School, where he took pride in helping guide young people and give them a stronger start in life. He enjoyed spending time with his son, friends, and family, as well as caring for his many cats and his late dog, Cody, who was always by his side. In addition to his father, Larry Bassett, he is survived by his stepmother, Cyndy Bassett; his son, Joshua Ford and his wife, Caitlin Ford; his siblings, Lori LaPenna, Lance and Leslie Bassett; and several nieces and nephews, including AJ Higginbotham, Chase Brooker, Delana Harper. A service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 9th at Phelps Funeral Chapel, 311 Hope Drive, Winchester, with Pastor Charly Franks officiating. Phyllis was wonderful homemaker, and also worked at the former Hardwick Printers as a screen printer for several years. She was a long time member of St. Aloysius Church, and was very devout in her faith and credits her long life to God. She was a member of Catholic Woman?s Council and was heavily involved with church bingo and potluck suppers. She could always be found at the church BBQ cake booth with Sister Doris spinning the Wheel of Fortune. A Funeral Mass for Phyllis will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at 11:00AM in St. Aloysius Church, 64 Church St., in Gilbertville. She was a World War II Army WAC veteran, serving as a clerk in the transportation division. Besides her husband she leaves a son, Joseph E. Lafrance, Chief Warrant Officer, U.S. Navy, stationed in Hawaii; four daughters, Lucille St. Jean of Coventry, Pauline Strach of East Providence, Jeanne Dunham of Jennings, La.; Claire Lee of Middletown; a brother, Norman Bessette of Pawtucket; three sisters, Germaine Campbell of Glocester, Eleanor Cotton of Pawtucket, Norma Rodrigues of Cumberland; and seven grandchildren. She was further honored, with a group of seniors, for volunteerism by President Ronald Reagan in the Rose Garden of the White House. She was a member of the Hillsgrove United Methodist Church for many years. She leaves two daughters, Dorothy E. Burkhardt of Martinez, Ga., and Barbara A. Koehler of Warwick; a foster daughter, Betty VanEck of Warwick; 28 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was mother of the late George E. In 1967 he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country for 28 years attaining the prestigious rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In his early years Roger was based in Germany and he is a Vietnam veteran. While holding specialties in infantry and aviation, Roger earned his bachelor?s degree and later began a lengthy career flying commercial airplanes working for Continental Airlines and flew under the rank of Captain for 23 years. Roger lived a full life. He enjoyed dancing, flying airplanes, and traveling with his friends and family. He was fond of the finer things in life. He enjoyed taking many cruises around the world with his loving wife. He liked entertaining guests at his home on Lake Conroe and boating with his family. He was a great father, grandfather, and husband. Roger was a born leader and the rock of the family and he will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his daughter Jennifer Carrol and his brother William Sims. | 681 | Shelby County Addison Sketches Samiel Nail Samuel Nail, a leading old and respected citizen of Addison Township, is a native of what was then Roann County, North Carolina, where he was born September, 1 1809, being the sixth in a family of thirteen children, born to Henry and Mary (Keller) Nail. They were natives of Germany and Pennsylvania, respectively. The former was born in 1771, and came to Pennsylvania with his parents in 1774. About two years later they moved to North Carolina, where his marriage with Mary Keller occurred in 1799. The family emigrated to Indiana and Shelby County in 1824, first settling n what is now Brandywine Township, and continued resident of this county until the father died. The mother survived him a few years, and died in Illinois. The immediate subject of this biography remained at home and assisted his parents on the farm, until he attained the age of twenty-two years. He received a very limited education, on consequence, of the poor facilities for schooling then in existence. January 8th, his marriage with Cherry Wray was solemnized. he has always made farming his occupation and has been uniformly successful. He now owns 420 acres of well improved land in this county, sixty acres in Fulton County, and eighty acres in Missouri, beside some property in Fairland. All of this is the accumulation of himself, assisted by an economical and industrious wife. They both are members of the Methodist Church, and have always tried to lead true and consistent lives. In politics, Mr. Nail was originally an old line Whig. Since the downfall of that party, he has usually voted for the best man without regard to party lines. Cherry (Wray) Nail, wife of the above was born September 13, 1813. She was a daughter of James and Tabitha (Bass) Wray, who were natives of Virginia and North Carolina, respectively. They came to Shelby County about 1822, where they resided until their deaths. James Wray, Mrs. Nail?s father, was born January 13, 1787, and died October 8, 1865. Her mother was born July 5, 1789, and died March 30, 1851. The father was a minister of the Gospel. Samuel and Cherry Nail have had seven children, three boys and four girls: Daniel W., James H., John W., Melinda, Rebecca, Harriet A., and Nancy E. Daniel W. Nail was born February 3, 1841. He married Lizzie Parker, and they have three children, via.: Harry, (who has lately wedded Nora Bass,) Gracie and Carrie. James H. Nail was born December 25, 1844. He has been twice married, and his wedding with his present wife, Mary Howe, took place December 30, 1883. Melinda Nail, now Heistand, was born June 9, 1834. Her husband?s name was Benjamin Heistand, whose biography is given elsewhere. She is the mother of four children: Rebecca, now Mrs. Samuel Hooever, Mary E., wife of George Ballard, and Sarah, consort of Mr. M.R. Montgomery; Samuel, the fourth, died several years ago. Rebecca Nail, now Thomas; see biography of Allen Thomas. Harriet A. Nail was born May 12, 1849. She was united in Marriage to Mr. Henry Malpas, August 2, 1867, and they now have three children: Samuel H., Charles H., and Raleigh McRae. Nancy E. Nail was born June 5, 1841, and is now the widow of William F. Francis, who died August 10, 1880. Three children were a result of this union, only one of whom is now living, viz., Hattie Francis. John W. Nail was born April 27, 1956. he married Miss Laura Gray June 30, 1882. They have had two children, one now is alive, Maud. Mr. Samuel Nail, the principal subject of this sketch, has nineteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren most of this large family are engaged in the pursuit of farming. She enjoyed singing in the choir and working with the United Methodist Women. She was most passionate about caring for her family and being ";Mema"; to her grandchildren. Bass, age 86, a native and lifelong resident of Long Beach, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2011, in Long Beach. Mr. Bass was part of the Bass Family that were some of the earliest settlers in Long Beach. He was a 1943 graduate of Long Beach High School. The day after he graduated from high school, he joined the United States Navy with his best friend, William Skellie of Long Beach. Mr. Bass was a devoted and loyal employee of Mississippi Power. He truly loved his work and retired after 36 years of service. He served on the Long Beach School Board for 15 years and was the President of the board at the time when the new Long Beach High School opened in September of 1958. He was a member of the former Central Baptist Church, Past Master of Masonic Lodge Southern Star #500, and was Worthy Patron of Eastern Star #306, all in Long Beach. Mr. Bass was also an avid golfer and fisherman. He was a tomato farmer and passionate in his desire to grow the finest tomatoes on the Coast. He delighted in surprising family and friends with gifts of large bags of tomatoes. Mr. Bass was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd & Artie Beech Bass; his sister, Nona Lee Watts; his brother, Jimmy Bass and an infant brother. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 66 years, Lottie M. Bass of Long Beach; his sons, Dr. R. He was in the 13th Air Force and drove a dozer, clearing and building air field landing strips for the B47s during the Battle of Morotai, an island in the South Pacific. In 1945, Tommy married Roberta Howell and moved to Troy to attend Troy University and received his teaching degree in 1949. The family moved to Panama City, Fla., where Tommy began his teaching career at Springfield Elementary. Tommy left teaching to join the U.S. Postal Service. He enjoyed playing semi-pro baseball and played with the Louisville Sluggers at one time. Tommy taught for the Covington County School System from 1963 to 1986 at Pleasant Home High School, Straughn High School, Red Level High School and Bethune High School. He will be remembered for his drivers education classes by so many in the community. | 692 | The Anniston Star, Alabama, Dec. 14, 1961 Workman Is Killed In Mishap Road Employe Is Victim By Jerry Hampton CENTRE ? a 51-year-old State Highway Department workman was killed instantly here Wednesday when caught beneath a falling tree while clearing right-of-way for a new road. J.D. Hunt, engineer in charge of the Centre office, identified the man as Calvin Wilson Bass of Piedmont, Rt. 3. The accident occurred in the Jamestown Community as a group of workmen cut a series of trees, Hunt explained. High winds in the area at the time held one of the trees upright after its base had been severed, Huhnt said, and workmen finally moved on to the next tree after fruitless efforts to bring the first to earth. Bass was picking up some brush in the fall path of the first tree when the wind suddenly stopped, and was crushed as the heavy weight toppled on top of him before he could move. He was dead when frantic fellow workmen tore away the brush and limbs to reach his body. Services will ber held from the Goshen Methodist Church with the Rev. M.J. McElhaney officiating. Mr. Bass was a State Highway Dept. employe, and along with others, was cutting trees. One tree had been sawed through, but was still standing upright. The men moved on, and Bass was picking up brush when a change in the direction of the wind brought the tree down on him. | 694 | The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 20 Mar 2009 John Thomas ?Jack? Bassett III (picture included) John Thomas "Jack" Bassett III passed away peacefully on March 18 following a brief illness. Jack was born 13 August 1921 in Toledo, Ohio. He was the son of John Thomas "Jay" Bassett, Jr. of Cornwall, England and Mittie Reba Johnson of Jeffersonville, Georgia. Jack, the eldest of four sons, moved with his family to Decatur in 1929, a time when Decatur had many more horses and buggies than autos, and remained a Decatur/DeKalb resident for the remainder of his life. After graduating from Druid Hills High School in 1938, Jack met the love of his life and married Edith Nash, a lifelong DeKalb resident, on March 1, 1942, and after more than 67 years of marriage, Edith was at his bedside at the time of his death. As a depression-era 13 year old, Jack began to milk cows in exchange for the milk. As a student at Druid Hills High School in the 1930's, he arrived late and left early so that he could run what had become a fully operational dairy farm; located first on Clairmont Road at North Druid Hills Road, and later on Lawrenceville Highway. In 1940 he consolidated resources with his parents to purchase property on Covington Highway in DeKalb County where he owned and operated Fernside Dairy until 1958. During the 1950's Fernside supplied milk for households and notable commercial establishments in the Atlanta/Emory area, including Plaza Drugs, Horton's, Stacy's and others. A dairyman at heart, Jack's later career primarily consisted of work in metro dairies. He also worked in sales and security. During his career, Jack attended Georgia Tech and ended his career in 2007 as a school crossing guard for the DeKalb Public Safety Department. Jack's passions included devotion to family, church, storytelling, and cowboy poets. He was an avid gardener; always growing more than he could use for the love of sharing. He never met a stranger. He was a near lifelong Methodist and was an active member of the Glenwood Hills Masonic Lodge. Jack is survived by his wife, Edith Nash Bassett of Decatur, and his brother, Paul Toms Bassett and his wife Juanita Jeroe Bassett of Richmond, Virginia. He is also survived by sisters- and brothers-in-law, Evelyn Wilder Bassett of Thomaston, Charles Donald Nash and Dot Cheek Nash of Decatur, and Donna Pauline Nash of Tucker. He is also survived by daughters Beverly June Bassett of Olympia, Washington and Betty Reba Bassett Sule of Lilburn. Also by his sons John Thomas Bassett IV and his wife Patricia Jean Bassett of Marietta, and Edward Nash Bassett and his wife Lynn Marie Bassett of Olympia, Washington. Bassett Mr. William Bassett, of Countesthorpe, Leicestershire, died, Oct. 4th, 1860, aged seventy-two0, after a short severe illness. At the early age of eighteen he had, through Divine grace, begun to develop the Christian life; and in April, 1811, he was baptized and received as a member of the church at Arnsby, there miles from his residence, by the Rev. W. Cuttris, then pastor, the second after the Rev. R. Hall, sen. Mr. Bassett soon began to exercise his apt and appropriate gifts as a preacher in the villages around. This he continued to do, with pleasure to himself and useful acceptance to others, to the last. In the year 1820 he was chosen deacon of the church, where he always worshipped except when called to supply neighbouring pulpits, which he often did in former years. He was truly earnest in his endeavors to discharge the duties of his office; not only in serving tables, but in maintaining the truth, securing order in worship, and discipline in the fellowship of the church. In his latter years, after retiring from the business of farmer and grazier, he wrote and published a concise and interesting history of the church at Arnsby, copies of which he was happy to lodge in most of our denominational institutions, as well as to distribute among friends. He was a native of Starks, Louisiana; born on April 29, 1926 to parents Jerry Bass and Mary (Thompson) Bass. He served his country in the Army during WWII as a Tank Destroyer. He retired from Brown Tool in 1988 where he worked as an Oil Field Worker. He enjoyed going fishing, hunting and he was one great story teller. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Irene Perkins, LaVerne Meyer; brothers, Thurman Sheffield, Almond Bass, Prentise Bass. He is survived by his brother, Ray Bass and his wife Carrie of Starks, LA and numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held on Monday, February 15, 2010 from 5 until 9 pm at Dorman Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 11 am at the funeral home, with Rev. She was born Jan. 20, 1937, the daughter of Maragret and Kenneth Bessette Sr. of Williston. A 1955 Burlington High School grad, Joan worked as a school bus driver in Williston and Pasco County, Fla., and won many driving awards. When she retired she didn't stop, Joan was active in Bunco group, Bocce ball, and Bingo clubs, two Red Hat chapters, was secretary of Beacon Woods Board of Directors where she lived, was an avid garage saler, and of course, with her beloved '08 Corvette convertible was a Corvette Club member. Joan was a vibrant woman also known as "Joanie-ago-go." Joannie will be dearly missed. Joan is survived by her five children, G. Scott Delaire of Williston, Mark A. Delaire of California, Jeffrey L. Delaire of Florida, Laurie A. Gaylord of New Hampshire, and Susan A. Moore of Florida; stepsons, John and Dan Johnson; sister, Joyce Fredette of Florida; brother, Kenneth Jr. and Gayle Bessette of Williston; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her husband, Lee Ward Johnson. Bass observed their golden wedding anniversary at their home on Sunday, Dec. 14th, with a family reunion. The date of their marriage was Dec. 12, 1897. A bountiful picnic dinner was enjoyed. Vernell Bass Allen, 95, of Timberlake, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Hock Family Pavilion after a lengthy decline in health. Mrs. Allen was a longtime resident of Semora before moving to Timberlake. She resided at Cambridge Hills Assisted Living and Roxboro Nursing Center for the past two years. Mrs. Allen was born on October 2, 1918 at her family home in Halifax County, Virginia. She was the youngest child of the late Willingham Bass and Elizabeth Churchill Bass. She was married to the late Thomas Scott Allen, Sr. She was also predeceased by her sister Frances Bass Jordan and her brother Charles Willingham Bass. Mrs. Allen served as the postmaster in Semora until her retirement. She was a lifelong member of Semora Baptist Church and held several roles over the years including treasurer, pianist, and Sunday School teacher. She is survived by her two children Thomas Scott Allen, Jr. and wife Ellen of Cary and daughter Dr. Margaret Karen (Kay) Allen of Timberlake. Mrs. Allen is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Patrick Scott Allen of Raleigh and Jonathan Thomas Allen and wife Haley of Holly Springs and her special buddy Sophie. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Mrs. Allen's caretaker and friend, Sylvia Kidd, for her loving care over the past two years. They also wish to thank the staffs at Hock Family Pavilion, Roxboro Nursing Center, and Cambridge Hills Assisted Living for their compassionate care of Mrs. Allen while she was a resident of each facility. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 22 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm at Brooks and White Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter.
