| 701 | The County Record, Kingstree, South Carolina, September 15, 1921 Sad Death of Young Lady Monday evening about six o?clock friends of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bass of Lane were deeply grieved to learn of Mrs. Bass? death, which had unexpectedly occurred at the hospital here following the birth of an infant, her first born. Before her marriage to Mr. Bass about one year ago, the deceased was a Miss Koontz of Arkansas, and at the time of her death was less than twenty years of age. Mr. Bass is from Rock Hill, a nephew of Mr. R.L. Bass, and since bringing his wife to this community they have made many friends. The young wife was especially attractive and by her sweet and noble disposition endeared herself to everyone she came in contact with. At the Kelley Sanitarium where she was taken Sunday afternoon, everything possible was done for her comfort and relief, but the physical condition of her constitution was such that she did not respond to scientific methods of treatment and she gradually grew weaker, passing away about 6 o?clock. Her little baby survives and is doing well. The remains of the young lady were taken to her late home at Lanes Monday night and thence to Rock Hill Tuesday for interment. | Koonce, Alvene (I3622)

| 702 | The Courier-Journal, Louisville, Kentucky, August 20, 2018 Myrtle Agnes Foushee (1933 ? 2018) (Picture included) Louisville - Myrtle "Agnes" Bassett Foushee (Mawmaw), age 85 of Louisville, Kentucky passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, August 19, 2018. Agnes lead a rewarding life filled with loving memories with her family and friends. She is preceded in death by many, including her husband, Bernard (Bernie) Foushee and her son, Paul Michael. Agnes graduated from Meade County High School in 1952 and prior to being married, she worked as a secretary at the Meade County RECC. She is survived by her son, David Foushee (Libby), and her daughters, Cindy Hartlage (Mike), Alexine Foushee, and Benesia Magill (Pat). She will be missed greatly by her grandchildren Sarah (Justin), Laura (Mike), Chris (Kelly Jo), Adam (Kayla), Melissa (Nick), Costner, Riley, Jim, and Ryan (Jordan). Agnes was also blessed with eleven great grandchildren. Anyone who knew her would agree she enjoyed story-telling and reminiscing. She always had a smile on her face and was content with the simple lifestyle. She was a devoted member of Incarnation Catholic Church and adored spending time with loved ones. Her funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday at Incarnation Catholic Church, 2229 Lower Hunters Trace, followed by burial at St. Martin of Tours Cemetery (Flaherty, KY). Visitation will be held at Heady-Hardy Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Hwy, on Monday from 3-8 pm. The family would like to thank the staff of Park Terrace for caring for her. Bass 1952 ? 2023 Myra Lindsey Bass, 71, departed this life for her eternal home from her Pontotoc Co. residence on Thursday afternoon, October 5, 2023 from complications of a stroke. Myra was born in Pontotoc on September 25, 1952 to the late Edward Levurl Lindsey and Ruth Jones Lindsey. She grew up in the Union Community south of Plantersville and graduated from Nettleton High School in 197O. She spent her working life working for BellSouth Telephone Company, retiring after 30 years as a service representative. Myra married Thomas Bass on Oct. 7, 1977, a marriage that would have been 46 years two days after her death. A member of the Valley Grove Baptist Church in Pontotoc County, she loved the outdoors, gardening and bird watching, reading, family gatherings, her children and grandchildren, and living the quiet life of a country lady. Myra's smile was remarkable and her life will be remembered as a virtuous woman whose heart was larger than life itself. A service celebrating her life will be held at 1 PM Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Valley Grove Baptist Church with her pastor, Bro. Greg Herndon officiating and Bro. Tommy Wiggins assisting. Private burial will follow in the Bass family plot at Valley Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11AM-service time on Sat. only at the Church. | 704 | The Daily News, Galveston County, Texas, Tuesday, 14 January 2025 Roland Louis Bassett GALVESTON, TX ? Roland Louis Bassett, exemplary husband, father and grandfather, passed away at UTMB in Galveston on January 7, 2025. Roland was born December 6, 1938, to parents Cecil Emerson Bassett and Opal Alvina Baltz in Council Grove, Kansas and lived in Mexico, Nebraska and Louisiana before choosing Galveston as his home. Roland graduated from University High in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. He said the best thing that ever happened to him was meeting and marrying his wife, Adrienne. They met while he was at Tulane Law School in New Orleans and eloped to Baton Rouge in 1962. Last year, they celebrated 62 years of marriage. In 1964, the pair moved to Galveston where Roland practiced law for more than 60 years. He was an active civic servant and considered it a privilege to serve his community. A lawyer by trade, Roland left an indelible mark on the island through his work, assisting many with legal incorporation and the formation of many charities. A Galveston College Regent, he helped establish its Universal Access scholarship program which has benefited thousands of young Galvestonians with tuition support. Roland chose Moody Methodist Church as his place of worship. He devoted his time and talent to being active in Church affairs and serving on several of its Boards and Committees. He was a founding member and Trustee of the Permanent Endowment Fund of Moody Methodist Church and Chairman of its Asset Management Committee. The fund serves non-profits whose focus areas include education, religious mission and ministry, health and wellness and crisis support services. For more than 40 years, Roland devoted himself to the Rosenberg Library. There, he was President for 15 years, and later became Treasurer. A devoted Rotarian, he served as the Galveston Rotary Club's Director and as a member of its foundation. He was elected as a Galveston City Council member and to the Galveston College Board. He served as Chairman of the Galveston Wharves Board. He also served on other boards including the Galveston Symphony, Galveston Housing Authority, Salvation Army of Galveston, Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Galveston. In the 1990s, Roland and Adrienne lived in Albania volunteering with the American Bar Association's Central & East European Law Initiative. There Roland assisted the new Albanian government in writing commercial laws following the collapse of the worst form of Communism ever devised. Roland is predeceased by his parents and his brother Cecil. He is survived by his wife Adrienne and their three boys Roland, Jr. and wife Michele, Mark and wife Mary Beth, Keith and wife Genette, and six grandchildren Bryson, Grace, Jordan, Anna, Alex and Allison. He is survived by a nephew, Dr. Cecil Bassett III. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Dr. Donald Strain and his children Sherri, Gregory, Susan, Cathy and Michael. The family is forever grateful to the caregivers at UTMB Jennie Sealy, the P.A.M. Rehabilitation Hospital, All Care Home Health and Right at Home for their love and kindness. The Daily News, Galveston County, Texas, Thursday, 9 January 2025 Longtime Galveston leader Roland Bassett dies at 88 Keith Bassett spoke with both sorrow and amusement while recalling his father's life. "He was a normal dad, and we weren't perfect children by any means," Bassett said with a slight laugh. "We gave him plenty of headaches, but he rarely told us how to live our lives and what to do. He was a leader by example." Roland Bassett, hailed by locals for his work as a longtime island leader, died Wednesday at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He was 88. "Everything you can think good about somebody, that's Roland Bassett," Jim Yarbrough, who serves on the Wharves Board of Trustees, said. "He just was a class act on top of being a terrific professional attorney, ultimate gentleman, ethical, honest, tell you like it is but in a nice way. "I just had so much respect for him that he was above reproach. He was top notch in every regard." Bassett, an attorney, served as a city councilman, a member of the Galveston Housing Authority board, on the city Planning Commission, the Galveston Central Appraisal District board and the Wharves Board of Trustees, and the United Way board, among others. He was president of the Rosenberg Library board for 15 years, served on several boards at Moody United Methodist Church, and was chairman of the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce. But it was 40 years as a Rotarian that truly summed up Roland Bassett's life, his son said. "We always joked that the Rotarians have the four-way test ?" he said, trailing off as his voice began to break. "He truly lived his life by that four-way test." The four-way test is: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? "He was a second-generation Rotarian," Keith Basset said. "My grandfather was born in the early 1900s and he was instrumental in a Rotary club in Dallas, so my dad had always followed that example." Family also joked that Bassett was "the man with many lives," his son said. "He had suffered a heart attack, had open-heart surgery and a stroke back in early 2000s and then he had a stroke in 2015," he said. "He had prostate cancer back in the early 2000s as well. He had various ailments over the years, but he had rebounded from everything." Right before Thanksgiving, Bassett fell and was hospitalized. Not long before he was scheduled to be released, he had a stroke. He had begun rehabilitation and was adapting to a new normal, Bassett said, but on Friday fell ill and never recovered. "Roland was a friend," City Manager Brian Maxwell said. "His son is my best friend. So, there were lots of opportunities to have and share good times with Roland and his wife and the entire Bassett family. "Roland has left a legacy that will be hard for anyone to surpass, but more importantly, he instilled that service of community in his sons who are involved across our city in making this a better place for everyone from the chamber, economic development, scouting and even the city pension board." Yarbrough said Bassett was someone he tried to emulate and set a standard to which Yarbrough held himself. "What I was always impressed with was just his ethics," he said. "I mean, he was just a straight shooter and he'll be missed." That sentiment was echoed by Maxwell. "People like Roland Basset don't come around every day," he said. "Galveston lost a good man and I and my family lost a dear friend." Bassett is survived by his wife of 62 years, Adrienne, and their three sons ? Roland Jr., Mark and Keith. All information on services still was pending as of Thursday, but visitation will take place Jan. 18 at J. Don Allen Bassett, 59, of Sun City, Ariz., son of Mary Louise Deeds of Evansville, died of natural causes at 10 a.m. Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. He received his bachelor?s degree from the University of Evansville, and his master?s of divinity from the Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. He was a United Methodist minister, and had served churches in Northern Indiana, Southern California and Arizona. He was a senior pastor at First United Methodist Church of Sun City for the past eight years. He was a clergy member of both the Desert Southwest Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and of the Central West District. He was a private pilot and a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. He had led church groups on ?People to People? tours to Russia, Europe and Israel and was a member of the Sun City Rotary Club. Also surviving are his wife, Jean; two sons, Kirk Alan Bassett and San Clemente, Calif., and Aaron Pierce Bassett of Vista, Calif.; a sister Charlene Gayle Betulius of Haubstadt, Ind.; and four grandchildren, Jason Bassett, Wesley Bassett, Brittany Bassett and Kylie Bassett. Bass William Hartwell Bass, 91, recently residing at Heritage Hall Health Care in the King George County Courthouse area, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at Mary Washington Hospital, of natural causes. A resident of Stafford County for 64 years, he was born in Richmond June 13, 1914, and was raised there and the area around Keeling and Ringgold near Danville. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, the former Myrtle Lee Booth, currently at Woodmont Center; his son, Bill Bass and his wife, Shirley, of Chesapeake; and his daughter, Norma Mears and her husband, Don, of Virginia Beach. Mr. Bass also leaves five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his brother, R. Homer Bass and his wife, Cordie, of Durham, N.C. He was predeceased by his father, John Robert Bass; his mother, the former Hattie Carol Moorefield; and his stepmother, the former Lillie Moorefield. Mr. Bass was educated at Dan River High School in Kentuck. Before World War II, he built Tankar Service Stations throughout the South. When the war halted construction, the family moved to Fredericksburg, where Mr. Bass joined Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. as an agent. He served in this position until his retirement in 1973. Mr. Bass was an active member of the Stafford County Lions Club and served in various positions, including president. For many years, he volunteered his time transporting a young blind student to the Virginia School for the Blind. He was a member of Falmouth Baptist Church. An amateur radio enthusiast, he spent many years as an active ham under the call sign W4ONV, using the handle "Bill." Throughout his life, he owned many animals that brought him great joy. As a young boy, he had a special dog and a pony. As an adult, he cherished his time with his beloved horse, Sheba, and his dogs, Chippy and Sim. In honor of his lifelong love of animals, memorial donations may be made to the Fredericksburg SPCA, 1523 Olde William St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401. Born in Greenville, she was a daughter of the late William B. and Minnie Peden Thomason and the widow of Marvin A. Bass. Before her retirement, she was a seamstress with J.C. Penny Co. She was a member of Peden Clan of Fairview Presbyterian Church and a member of Dunean Presbyterian Church, where she was a former Sunday schoolteacher of the Ladies Bible Class. Surviving are three daughters, Katie B. Turner of Greenville, Nina F. Finley of Fort Mill and June B. Wilson of Birmingham, Ala.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandchild, Nancy Lee Bingham. She was born Sept. 20, 1937, in Geneva Township, to Everett and Lula (Gipson) Bassett. Donna worked at South Haven Coil for over 30 years. She enjoyed sewing and making Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. She also enjoyed her flowers. Bass died Saturday, Dec. 14, at his home. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 19, in the chapel of Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, 108 Cross Creek Road., Central, S. C., with the Rev. Harold Olson, Judge Gary Barnes and Coach Jim Hammett offi-ciating. The "Coffee Club" will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home. The family will be at their respective homes. Coach Bass was a graduate of Mooresville High School, Maryville College in Tennessee; Edinburgh Scotland; and the Sports Academy in Mobile, Ala. Tom served in the 82nd Airborne Pathfinders during the Korean Conflict, making 69 jumps. Tom's coaching career spanned 41 years. He coached at Sevier County, Tenn., for four years, where he had Dolly Parton as a student; one year at the University of Tennessee; 14 years at Clemson University under five different coaches; 20 years at Seneca High School, where he served as athletic director and head coach; and after 10 years of retirement, returned for one year at Seneca High School. Tom loved football and golf and was an avid reader. He was a proud member of the "morning coffee club," where he shared his morning coffee with his many friends. He loved his family and especially his grandchildren. Tom was a member of First Baptist Church of Clemson. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Dee Bass, of the home; the mother of his children, Susan P. Keaton of Abbeville, S. C.; children, Stephen (Barbara) Bass of Seneca, Laura Bass of Austin, Texas and John (Samantha) Bass of Anderson, S. C.; stepdaughter, Dee Anne (Robbie) Shoenleben of Liberty, S. C.; cherished and beloved grandchildren, Ian Shoenleben, Andrew Bass, Hannah Bass and Harper Bass; brothers-in-law, Larry (Barbara) Morgan of Englewood, Tenn. and Jerry Morgan of Madisonville, Tenn.; and a number of aunts and nieces and nephews. He was the husband of Evelyn (Keich) Bass. He was a truck driver for the Atlas Powder Co., Reynolds, for the past many years. Born in Wilson, N.C., he was a son of the late John and Beatrice (West) Bass. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Tamaqua, where he was a former church deacon. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific Theater of Operations. Surviving with his widow are three sons, Lester W. Jr. of Palmerton, Gary G. of Chesapeake, Va., and David A. of Endicott, N.Y.; a daughter, Dianne L. Ontiveros of Cancun, Mexico; three brothers, Alex of Tarboro, N.C., John H. She was the wife of Francis ?Wally? Bassett. Donna was born in New Haven on April 27, 1949; daughter of the late Raymond and Alice M. Jorgensen Geissler. She enjoyed life as a homemaker and loved being surrounded by her grandchildren. She was a member of ?Danish Sisterhood of America? for 50 years and also loved her animals, camping and gardening. Mother of Craig W. (Sandra) Bassett, Kimberly D. Leyerzapf and Christopher D. (Jessica) Bassett. Grandmother of Kayla, Kevin, Carson, Taryn, Pierce, Makenzie and Mitchell. Elzie was born on May 27, 1933, in Williston, Fla., to Lewis Elzie Sr. and Freida Mae (Bell) Bass. Elzie was employed as a bread salesman for 42 years with Flowers Baking Company. He proudly served over four years during the Korean Conflict in the United States Army with the 1st Army Rangers Division. During his time in service, Mr. Bass was the recipient of a Purple Heart for the injuries he received during combat. Mr. Bass had lived in Panama City, Fla., for most of his life. He was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Panama City, Fla. Elzie was a member of the Bay County Disabled American Veterans Association Chapter 17 in Panama City, Fla. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Davis. Born 1950, to the late George and Marie Rose (Thibeault) Bessette of Plainfield. Michael graduated from Plainfield High School in 1968 and began working at Pervel Industries Inc., he was promoted to foreman in 1973. Michael was married in 1971 to his former spouse and had one daughter. A man of many talents, Michael dominated a variety of professions including joining the West Wauregan Volunteer Fire Department as a fireman, EMT, and eventually assistant chief. He worked many years as a stone cutter for LaPerle's and later Tri-County Memorials. In between he held a respected position at Anchor Glass Container in Dayville. In 1996, Michael graduated with honors from Johnson and Wales University in culinary arts. He quickly went to work as the Executive Chef of The Lord Thompson Manor, leading to the honor of being considered for a prestigious James Beard award. When he wasn't cooking, Big Mike (as he was known to his family and friends), enjoyed photography, playing guitar, gardening, fishing, and visiting with his beloved Grand-Cats. Mike is survived by his daughter Christina and Son-in-law Michael Stadolnik of Plainfield. Brothers: Francis (Evelyn) Bessette of Brooklyn, Gerard Bessette of New York and Sister, Louise (the late Louie) LaPerle of Scotland. He was born October 20, 1930, in Smithton, a son of James and Myrtle Bass. On March 23, 1957, at Lake Creek Methodist Church he was married to Dorothy Culp who survives of the home. He was raised and educated in Smithton. He and Dorothy made Smithton their lifelong home until their health declined. He was a member of Smithton United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He enjoyed his work in the sporting goods department at Cash Hardware for 25 years buying, selling and trading until the store closed. He continued buying, selling and trading sporting goods as a hobby. He went to work at Bob's AF Super, and then worked as a courier at Third National Bank, retiring in 2003. He served as mayor of Smithton. He was a Boy Scout troop leader. He enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting, fishing and target practice Also surviving are a daughter Anissa Douglas and her husband, Jerry; four grandchildren, Ashley, Aaron, Chase and Jayden, all of Smithton. He was the beloved husband of Joan T. (Cinqmars) Walton for twentyeight loving years. A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, he was a son of the late Philidore and Angelina (Morel) Bessette. Ray was a United States Navy veteran of the Vietnam Era and went on to work for the Pawtucket School Department for over twenty-five years having retired in 2022. He was a longtime member of the Major Walter G. Gatchell VFW Post 306, where he served as vice-commander. Ray loved to travel, together with Joan they travelled extensively to many areas of the U.S. and Europe. One of the most memorable was a trip to Normandy, where they visited the beaches where the infamous DDay landings took place. One of Ray's many hobbies was to collect cans and bottles, bring them to the recycling center and put the extra money toward his trips and vacations. On one occasion he realized over $500 from his redemptions. Ray was a true gentleman, kind, helpful and possessed a good sense of humor. He will be lovingly remembered by all whose lives he has touched over the past seventy-five years. Along with his loving wife, Ray leaves two stepchildren, Daniel Sullivan and his wife, Danielle, of Cumberland, and Rebecca Refino of Pawtucket; three grandchildren, Evelyn and Brayden Refino both of Pawtucket, and Theo Sullivan of Cumberland; two sisters, Jeannette Collette and her husband, Paul, of Prudence Island, and Cecile Paquette and her husband, Robert, of Pawtucket; a stepson-inJaw, Todd Alexander of Pawtucket; a sister-in-law, Joan Casey of Swansea; a brother-in-law, Donald Doucette of Attleboro and many nieces and nephews. A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019, at Stevens Memorial Chapel (607 28th St., Ames, IA 50010) with the funeral mass at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (915 12th St., Boone, IA 50036). Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery. Betty was born Nov. 26, 1925, at BooneHospital to Edward and Ella (McBride) Bass. Betty graduated from Boone High School in 1944. Her first job was at Ordinance plant in Ankeny (World War II). Betty worked on machine gauged 30- and 50-caliber loaded bullets. She said she was very scared at this job but it was good money and worked with wonderful people. After World War II, she married the love of her life, James J Pepper, at St. Peters and Paul Catholic Church in Gilbert, on March 15, 1945. Betty and James farmed so she become a farmer's wife, it was very hard work. In 1958, they decided to leave farming and move to Ames. James started work at Iowa State University and became an electrician. After her third daughter started school, Betty went to work for Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University. She started in high energy physics group as a scanner. Betty looked at film and measured particles on machines. After three years, Betty became supervisor and had a crew of 15 to 20 girls. When computers took over Betty's job, she became a plate marker. She worked for 25 years for Iowa State University. When Betty's husband passed away, she started doing some traveling. She enjoyed going and visiting her daughters and grandchildren in Florida. She loved looking for shells on the beach and caught her first shark surf fishing. She loved her trip to New York and Branson, Mo. Betty's favorite sport was Iowa State men's basketball. Even if they didnt have the best season, to her they were still the best. Betty is survived by her three children, Sandra (David) Henninger, Cynthia (Rich) Cooper and James Edward (Lindsey) Pepper; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Bassett, 71, one of Whitesville most respected resident, died at his home here Tuesday evening following a serious illness of about 10 days. Although Mr. Bassett had been in failing health for the past year, he had not been confined until last week. He was a merchant in Whitesville for many years, duing which time he and his brother, Guy Bassett, now of Rochester, operated the Bassett Brothers? Hardware Store on the corner of Main Street and Wildman Avenue. In addition to his duties in the hardware business, Mr. Bassett, for 18 years, 1914 to 1932, served as financial clerk of the Senate of the State of New York, a position which took him to Albany during the sessions of the Senate. In 1938 he was elected Clerk of the Town of Independence, a position which he held at the time of his death. Born in the Town of Greenwood, February 15, 1877, he was one of three sons of Frank and Hortense Manning Bassett. The family moved to Whitesville when Mr. Bassett was approximately six years of age, and he has been a resident of this village since that time. He was married to Essie Perkins Chapman on October 12, 1916, who survives, as does one daughter, Mrs. Rose Griffin, Whitesville, and a brother, Guy Bassett, of Rochester. A second brother preceeded Mr. Bassett in death. Funeral services will be held form the Methodist Church on Friday afternoon at two o?clock, the Rev. O. Blakely Hill, Wellsville, in charge. | 745 | Wisconsin State Journal, Madison, Friday, June 11, 2010 Bernard Bass MADISON - Bernard Bass, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at Karmenta Nursing Home. He was born on Nov. 2, 1921, in Adams, the son of William and Grace (Evans) Bass. He honorably served in the United States Army during World War II. Bernard was in the 44th Tank Battalion serving in the Pacific. He was instrumental in liberating the Philippines. Bernard was active in the local No. 464 Laborers Union. He worked in construction and helped build many of the buildings in Madison. Bernard enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an avid sports fan. He knew every stat and score in baseball, basketball, football and horse racing. Bernard was a lifelong Brewers and Cubs fan. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; children, Susan (John) Hersch, Sandra Bass and Catherine Bass; grandchildren, Anne Hersch (Mike Iswalt) and Carolyn Hersch; brother, Floyd Bass; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. A funeral service will be held at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., on Saturday, June 12, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. A visitation will be at the funeral home from 4:30 p.m. until the time of service. He was born in Whitinsville, MA the son of the late Roland Lapierre and Claire (Bassett) Lapierre of Hernando, FL. He also leaves two sons Daniel of Uxbridge and Michael of Thompson, CT; a sister Suzanne Haganey & her husband James of FL; a brother Richard & his wife Karen of Oxford; several nieces & nephews. He was a graduate of Northbridge High School and later worked for the Town of Northbridge Highway Dept.. He was an avid sports fan he especially enjoyed the Patriots and Red Sox. (Clark) Bassett, 94, passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Oakdale Rehabilitation and Skilled Nurse Center in West Boylston after an illness. Her loving husband of 50 years, Robert W. Bassett, Sr., passed away in 1991. She leaves a son, David R. Bassett and his wife, Gale of Princeton; a brother, Charles Clark of Hubbardston; four sisters, Evelyn Johnson of Hubbardston, Eleanor Gallant of Gardner, Roberta Kenda of Gardner and Priscilla Johnson of Oxford; two grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by two sons, Robert W. Bassett, Jr. and Arthur Bassett; two brothers, Hobert and John Clark and four sisters, Harriett Mallozzi, Grace Lisko, Marion Gustafson and Ellen Langelier. Marjorie was born in Hubbardston, the daughter of Lyman and Harriett (Butler) Clark and graduated from David Hale Fanning Girls Trade School in 1938. She was a member of Holden Senior Center and its Walking Club. She enjoyed bowling, cooking, knitting, reading and watching golf on TV. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thurs., Oct. 29, 2015, in the Keahey Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Russell Broussard officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. | 750 | The Chattanooga Daily Rebel, Tennessee, October 7, 1862 Dr. William Bass Dr. William Bass, a physician of this city, and son of John M. Bass, who has been connected with a gorilla party for some time now in this vicinity, met with a violent death a few nights ago. A guard of federal soldiers placed at the house of Mrs. Gen. Harding, in the country, at her request, to protect her property, had been fired on and captured by a party of gorillas led by Mr. Bass and an order was issued for his arrest. A party of soldiers were sent to a house where he had secreted himself to arrest him. He attempted to make his escape and was twice halted by the soldiers. He paid no attention to the command, when one of the fired on him with fatal effect. Bass Place The Bass Place, on the Charlotte Pike, six miles west of Nashville, formerly known as theh old Watkins homestead, was originally owned by W.E. Watkins, one of the noted men of his day. The original tract wa one thousand acres, running along the Charlotte Pike from the Cockrill place to the old Davison homestead, and backing on the Cumberland River. The old house of some fifteen rooms was built of brick and stone, bhe brick being molded and burned and the stone quarried and hauled by the slaves. The floors of this hold house were hand dressed and of ash, the sleepers and rafters werer cut out by hatchet and adz and are as good today as when put into the house. The shingles were of cedar and hand made and some of them are on the house today, though this building was completed about 1850. The only daughter of W.E. Watkins married Dr. William Bass. Of this union there were five sons. Those living are Major W.J. Bass of Chattanooga, and O.E. Bass of West Nashville, both of whoem now own a greater part of the old tract. During the Civil War a great many important events took place on this property. Dr. William Bass left home to cast his lot with General Forrest, was commissioned captain and ordered to Nashville to recruit a troop of cavalry. After Captain Bass had recruited a troop of cavalry he came in close to Nashville and passed one night at Genral Harding?s on the Harding Pike, known as ?Belle Meade?. Some of the negroes informed the Federals of his whereabouts, but he got away in time not be captured. A night or so after this, Captain Bass, with a few select men, went into camp on the Cumberland River, near the Charlotte Pike and alone went to see his wife and children at the old Watkins place, leaving orders for his troop or cavalry to come for him a three o?clock in the morning in order that they might attack the Federal pickets stationed on the Barrow hill, near Nashville. Some of the darkies on the place learned of Captain Bass? arrival at home and immediately reported to the Federals at Nashville. The Thirty-third Michigan Regiment was ordered out (and it is not stated definetly who was commander, whether Rosecrans or Alger). This regiment reached the old house, and called upon Captain Bass to come out. He came to the front door, thinking the call was from his own men, and without a word of warning he was host shot down by this Federal regiment, and left in the front yard. Hardly a part of his body escaped the bullets. The old home was ransacked and lmost torn to pieces. Captain Bass? wife, with five little children, was left on the place alone, every negro being ordered away. W.E. Watkins, then nearly seventy years of age, was also taken prisoner to the city. This young mother, with her five children was left to care for as best she could the murdered husband, and it was several days before proper burial arragenments could be perfected, the Federals refusing to allow anyone to pass through the lines and declining to permit andy help whatever. Several days after this, Forrest came ito this section and had his revenge. Several gunboats were captured on the river and burned. Before these gunboats were captured, an attempt was made to destroy the old house, and several cannon balls were shot through it. On the river banks, high in the hills, there are many graves where the dead are buried, with no marks to distinguish them. The writer of this article recalls, as a child, standing by and seeing four or five soldiers burierd in a trench, in their uniforms, the Federals in one place and Confederates in another. Much more could be written of the same history, but what is the use of recalling to this generation the bloody deeds and cruelty of a generation that is past.
