| 7322 | 1860 Federal Census - Nathan Henry Bass is listed in both Bibb County and Floyd County 1870 Federal Census of Rome, Floyd County, Georgia (July 1, 1870) Nathan Bass - 61 - Male - Georgia - Farmer 141,500 24,200 Caroline - 50 - Female - Georgia - Keeping House Eugenia B. - 30 - Female - Georgia - At Home John H. - 28 - Male - Georgia - Teacher Julia B. - 14 - Female - Georgia - At School Martha Hurt - 38 - Female - Georgia - At Home and six others Biographical Register of the Confederate Congress By Ezra J. Warner Nathan Bass (Georgia) was born October 1, 1808, certainly in Georgia, and probably in Putnam County, whence his parents had moved from Virginia. He is said to have been educated at Mount Pleasant Academy, the location of which is unknown to the Georgia Historical Society, but which may have been in the hamlet of Mount Pleasant in Wayne County. Shortly after 1840 Bass took his family, including two stepdaughters, to the newly opened Floyd County in northwest Georgia, where they were listed as early settlers of Rome. After acquiring land and slaves in Floyd County, Bass moved with his family in 1851 to Macon in Bibb County, where he came to be regarded as one of the wealthiest men in Georgia - his personal property in Bibb County alone was worth $351,000 in 1860 and his real estate was worth $251,000. Besides this, he retained ownership of his land and Negroes in Floyd County, and an undetermined interest in plantation lands in Barbour County, Alabama. As a Union Democrat, Bass was for years active in politics as well as in civic affairs. He served as vice-president of the Cotton Planters’ Convention of the Southern States in 1851; and five years later he was appointed chairman of the Kansas Aid Meeting, formed to combat the abolitionist movement and to lend assistance to proslavery settlers in the new territory. As president of the Cotton Planters’ Association, Bass presided at the inaugural of the Belgian Fair in Macon. When Georgia seceded the next year, he went with his state despite his Union principles. When Eugenius A. Nisbet (q.v.) resigned from the Provisional Congress, Bass, without his knowledge, was chosen to succeed him. Bass took his seat January 14, 1862, and thus served only until adjournment on February 17. During his brief tenure he took little part in lawmaking but apparently had confidence in Jefferson Davis; he granted the War Department whatever use of manpower it requested. His few votes on other matters, however, indicate that he opposed any control by the Confederate government over the economy. He made no effort to seek election to the Regular Congress. In the remaining course of the war Bass was prominent in supporting various civic enterprises while two of his sons served in the Confederate army. At its termination he was, of course, ruined by inflation, the expropriation of his slave property, and the subsequent decline of the southern economy. By 1872 he had moved back to Rome, Georgia, where he lived, bereft of his former land holdings, in a sort of genteel poverty until his death there on September 22, 1890, at the age of eighty-two. He was buried in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Rome, with his wife and several of his sons and daughters. | Bass, Colonel Nathan Henry Sr. (I48279)

Bassett Funeral services will be Thursday in Los Angeles for William L. Bassett, 91, member of a pioneer Minneapolis family and son of the man for whom Bassett's creek here was named. Word of Mr. Bassett's death at his California home was received Wednesday by T.G. Dolliff of the L.P. Dolliff Lumber Co., a former business associate, in a wire from J. Bean Bassett, a son. History of the City of Minneapolis, Minnesota (1893) Joel B. Bassett. The Bassett family belongs to the French Huguenot stock. After St. Bartholomew, some of its members passed to the British islands, whence they joned the emigration which brought exiles from religious intolerance and persecution to the American colonies. The town records of Lynn, Mass., show the name among the citizens of that town as early as 1640, and the family records indicate that they remained there some years after the close of the Revolutionary war, whence they removed to New Hampshire. In the early part of the present century Daniel Bassett, Sr., was a resident of Wolfboro, Stafford County, N.H. He cultivated a farm, and having been raised with religious principles promulgated by George Fox, he cultivated the gift within him, as the spirit gave him utterance, in the earnest but simple worship of the Society of Friends. He was uncompromising in his religious and political opinions. He was an early anti-slavery man, manumitting by a formal deed a slave that the laws of his state allowed him to hold as a chattel. In politics he was a Federalist, firmly supporting the Adams, and when the Whig party took the sucession, followed the fortunes and teachings of Clay and Webster, until it in turn was merged into the Republican organization. The state of New Hampshire was Democratic from its organization until the year 1850. Franklin Pierce and John G. Atherton had full control of the Democratic party in the state, and distributed the federal and state patronage among their supporters. The question of slavery entered largely into political discussions. When John P. Hale, Mason W. Tappan and Daniel Bassett, Jr., with their associates, undertook to wrest the state from the Democratic party, and succeeded in electing a Republican governor and sent John P. Hale to the United States Senate, no man in the state did more to bring about the political revolution than the last named of the above. Joel B. Bassett was born at Wolfboro, New Hampshire, in 1817, being the son of Daniel Bassett, Sr. His early life was laborious, and frugal, being passed upon the rugged farm, which he assisted his father and brothers to cultivate. His scholastic advantages were such as the country school afforded, and an academy located in the village adjacent to the farm, which he attended about two years. He was endowed with a mind eager for the acquisition of knowledge, and with a keen perception of facts and occurrences passing before him, so that by reading and observations he acquired a general education in practical things. Throughout his busy life he has been an omniverious reader of the news of the day, of periodical literature, and of books of science, history, and the practical arts. He has at his home one of the most extensive and valuable private libraries to be found in the city, where he spends much of his leisure time. As was customary with New England boys, young Bassett, remained at home, assisting his father in the labor of the farm until he reached his majority. He then went to the state of Maine and engaged in lumbering, working in the pineries, on the rivers, and in the mills for twelve years. During this time he was united in marriage with Miss Carpenter, who has been his life companion until one year ago, when she passed away. The only child of the marriage is W.L. Bassett, who was born and received his training and education in Minneapolis. He graduated with much eclat at the Minnesota State University, and after spending one year at Ann Arbor in the University of Michigan, in the law department, he engaged with his father in the management of the extensive lumber business of J.B. Bassett & Co. | Bassett, William Lincoln (I1464)

Among widely known business men of Philadelphia must be numbered Henry Bassett, president and director of Bassett, McNab Company, Incorporated. Anything that makes for the advancement of Philadelphia finds in Mr. Bassett a warm supporter, and he is a welcome figure in her club circle Henry Bassett, was born in Philadelphia, March 29, 1857, son of Jacob Keen and Elizabeth (Burt) Bassett. He received his education in the schools of Philadelphia and Eastern Maryland. He began the business of life as a farm boy on a farm on the Eastern Shore, Maryland, continuing in this work until the age of sixteen. Henry Bassett, his grandfather, emigrated from Philadelphia, going to Mobile, Alabama, where he entered the shipbuilding business on his own account. Jacob Keen Bassett, father of Henry Bassett, went South and started with his father and was there one year when he and his wife died of yellow fever. Henry Bassett was raised by his grandfather, until the age of nine, when he was sent to Philadelphia, where he lived with his uncle, Clement Keen, finally going to Holmesburg, Philadelphia. Here he remained with Henry Weed for two years and later went to Isaac Overdorf, an uncle, in Burlington, New Jersey, for six months and thence to the farm at Longwood, Maryland, where he remained for seven years, finally taking up his residence with Mrs. Benjamin E. Mahan, his sister, in Wilmington, Delaware, where he remained for four years, then returning to Philadelphia. Here he learned the trade of upholstering, and in 1882 came with the present house, then known as Brown, DeTurck and Company, which name was changed later to DeTurk, Bassett & Company, at which time Mr. Bassett became a partner. In 1902 the firm name was changed again to Bassett, McNab & Company, and was incorporated January 1, 1921, as Bassett, McNab Company, Incorporated, with Mr. Bassett as its first president, and office, with that of director, he still holds. A man of action rather than words, he has ever demonstrated his public spirit by actual achievements that have advanced the wealth and prosperity of his city. The upholstery house which he heads, and has largely aided in making one of the largest of its kind in the United States, has offices in Paris, New Yor Chicago and Los Angeles, the headquarters being, of course, Philadelphia. Its great growth has been chiefly due to the vision, foresight and aggressiveness of Mr. Bassett. Politically, Mr. Bassett is a Republican, but has never accepted office. Of genial personality, he holds membership in various clubs, among them the Union League and Philadelphia Country, of Philadelphia; the Ocean City Fishing and Ocean City Yacht, of Ocean City, New Jersey, and the Seaview Gold, of Absecon, New Jersey. Fraternally, he is identified with the Masonic fraternity, being a member of Harmony Lodge, No. 52, Free and Accepted Masons; Oriental Chapter, No. 183, Royal Arch Masons; Mary Commandery, No. 36, Knights Templar, and a member of Lulu Temple. For a number of years Mr. Bassett was a member of Company C, First Regiment, National Guard, Pennsylvania and is now a member of the First Regiment, Veteran Corps. The personality of Henry Bassett gives assurance of the force of character and vigor of mentality which his career has shown him to possess. Progressiveness is a part of his being, and he keeps step with all that is new, but no man perceives more clearly the dividing line between courage and rashness. His nature is kindly and genial, he makes friends and holds them, and in appearance and manner he is a true type of the broad-gauge business man of Philadelphia. On November 25, 1890, in Philadelphia, Mr. Bassett married Emma Cecelia Shaw. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett are the parents of a son: Henry Bassett, Jr.; born May 18, 1896, educated at and a graduate of Episcopal Academy, then attended the Wharton School of Finance, of the University of Pennsylvania; now in business with his father, being secretary and director of Bassett, McNab Company, Incorporated; married Dorothy Fisher Morris, and they are the parents of two sons (twins) and a daughter: Henry Bassett, born May 24, 1922; Robert Morris Bassett, born May 24, 1922; and Ann Bassett, born August 30, 1924. Henry Bassett's career may be summed up in one word - success - the result of his own unaided efforts. Throughout his career he has been animated by the spirit of progress, ever pressing forward and seeking to make the good better and the better best. Happily gifted in manner, disposition and taste, enterprising and original in ideas, personally liked most by those who know him best, and as frank in declaring his principles as he is sincere in maintaining them, his career has been a well-rounded one, and has add worthy page to the business annals of Philadelphia. Mr. Bassett's portrait appears with this account. Henry Bassett PHILADELPHIA - Sept. 27. Henry Bassett, well known in the upholstery trade here, died today at the home of his son, Henry Bassett Jr., in Wynnefield, after an illness of more than a year. He was 75 years old. Formerly the head of Bassett, McNab Company, he was a member of the Uni League the Elks and several Masonic orders. He leaves his wife and a son. | Bassett, Henry (I9)

Bassett, New Haven: ex-minister to Hayti. Ebenezer D. Bassett was born at Litchfield, Conn., on Oct. 16, 1833. His father was a mulatto, and his mother a pure Indian of the Pequot tribe. He attended the Birmingham Academy, and early distinguished himself as a mathematician by solving problems in the differential and integral calculus with as much ease as an ordinary scholar would perform examples in arithmetic. After finishing the course of study at this academy, he attended the State Normal School at New Britain, from which he graduated in 1953. During the two years following his graduation he taught successfully the Whiting Street Grammar School in New Haven. At this time he availed himself of the privilege of continuing the study of the classics and higher mathematics under professors at Yale College. In 1855 he married Miss Eliza Park of New Haven, and moved to Philadelphia, Pa., where he accepted the principalship of the Institute for Colored Youth, a school founded by the Orthodox Society of Friends for the purpose of giving a liberal education to colored youth, and preparing them to become efficient teachers. At this institution he taught the advanced classes in Latin, Greek, and the higher mathematics, and devoted himself to the education of his race. Here he exhibited marked ability as an instructor and disciplinarian. He possessed the rare quality of inspiring his pupils with an earnest desire to excel in whatever they undertook, and he therefore cultivated to a high degree the power of patient investigation and application. Mr. Bassett's scholarly ability awakened in his pupils a desire to emulate him. About his time the institute used to be visited by interested persons from all parts of the United States and even from the old world, and, as they listed to the translations of Homer, of Virgil, and of Horace, and as they saw the facility with which difficult problems in mathematics were demonstrated and solved, they would exclaim "This is wonderful!" And this expression was not exaggerated when we consider that these results were achieved during the dark and apparently hopeless days of slavery. Through the untiring efforts of Mr. Bassett his school was made to rank with the best institutions in the country. The proficiency of his classed became a standing argument against the injustice which could keep in the darkness of ignorance minds capable of such attainments. So much was the cause of freedom advanced and its possibilities worked out in the quiet of the school-room. At the beginning of President Grant's administration, it was decided by the republican leaders at Washington that colored men of acknowledged ability should receive positions in both home and foreign service. Mr. Bassett was the first candidate selected unanimously by the prominent men of his own race, and supported by distinguished persons in all parts of the Union for a diplomatic appointment. In President Grant's first list of nominations Mr. Bassett's name was sent for the mission to Hayti, and the nomination was promptly confirmed by the senate. This appointment made Mr. Bassett the first colored man to represent our country abroad. Mr. Frederick Douglass spoke of it as "a significant event, the triumph of a cause - the first small wire stretched over a chasm separating tow races." After receiving from his countrymen many ovations and considerate attentions, Mr. Bassett sailed for Hayti in June, 1869. When he reached Port-au-Prince he was received with every evidence of regard and satisfaction by the Haytian government and people. Hayti was unfortunately at this time in the midst of a bitter civil strife. Mr. Bassett found himself surrounded at once by factions and intrigues, and yet, in the discharge of his duties, he won and maintained the confidence and respect of our government at Washington, by whom he was highly commended for his heroic conduct during the Salnave revolution. Mr. Bassett's experience at this time in a country where the right of asylum had a particular force and significance, brought to him afterwards an invitation from the Kent Club of the Yale Law School, to lecture before its members on the subject. The New Haven Palladium, at this time, in speaking of this lecture said, "Mr. Bassett, having been our ambassador at Port-au-Prince, was peculiarly qualified for the masterly handling of 'Right of Asylum.' The lecture was listened to by a highly intelligent and appreciative audience, among whom were many who are prominent in law circles. Those who attended had the pleasure of hearing an able and scholarly disquisition on the subject". Mr. Bassett so won the confidence of the Haytian people by his nine years residence among them, that he was appointed by President Salomon in 1880 to be Haytian consul at New York. He faithfully discharged the duties of this office until the end of President Salomon's administration in December, 1888. Mr. Bassett's ripe scholarship and high attainments make him distinguished among scholars. His thorough study of the classics and of the French language shows itself in the style of his writing, which is finished and accurate. He is unassuming and cordial in his manners, thus making his social intercourse pleasant and agreeable. He could hardly fail to have an honorable position in the community at his present home, New Haven, where he is known as one of its scholarly, public-spirited and influential citizens. On many occasions he enjoys extended courtesies from New Haven's city fathers. In all the relations of life he is emphatically a good man - not passively good, but actively worth and earnest. Biographies Ebenezer D. Bassett Was born in Litchfield, Conn., October 16, 1833, and came to Derby when an infant, so that he is essentially a Derby citizen. His early education was very meagre, and while an office boy for Doct. A. Beardsley he developed talents that courted encouragement. He attended the High School in Birmingham, then went to the academy at Wilbraham, Mass., graduated at the State Normal School in 1853; studied at Yale in 1854 and 1855, obtaining a good knowledge of the classics. He then devoted himself to teaching, continuing for sixteen years. If his skin was not white he was a good a scholar and excelled in mathematics. During the war he wrote many appeals, which appeared in the newspapers, to encourage the enlistment of colored soldiers. He has been minister to Hayti eight years, and is now stationed in New York city as consulate of the Unites States to Hayti, for which position he is laregely indebted to Col. William B. Wooster and others of Birmingham, who encouraged and furnished him means to press forward in his ambition. In a note he makes the following acknowledgment: "My success in life I owe greatly to that American sense of fairness which was tendered me in old Derby, and which exacts that every man, whether white or black, shall have a fiar chance to run his race in life and make the most of himself". The National Cyclopaedia of American Biography Picture included BASSETT, Ebenezer Don Carlos, diplomatist, was born at Litchfield, Conn., Oct. 16, 1833, son of Ebenezer Tobias and Susan (Gregory) Bassett.
