Hinton 1861-1941 1877-1961 wife of 1862-1900 A. Burdette McGill 1885-1957 History of LaSalle County (1886) Daniel Bassett was born in Harwinton, Litchfield County, Conn., Feb. 16, 1823. He was eldest son of Leverett Ives Bassett, who was the 6th lineal descendant of William Bassett who, with his brother John, emigrated from England to Boston, Mass. in 1639. John settled in Mass. and William near New Haven, Conn. Leverette I. Bassett was an extensive farmer, and his son Daniel inherited his dispostion to engage largely in agricultural pursuits. In the summer of 1852 he married Amy E. Barker of Plymouth, Conn. and the following autumn settled in Peoria County, Ill. where he remained until the spring of 1865, when he moved to Groveland Twp., LaSalle County. He was 560 acres of land in one tract which is one of the best farms in the county. In 1875 he built his barn, a substantial structure, 54 x 60 feet in size, and in 1883 erected his residence, which cost $5,000 and is one of the best arranged and most complete in every detail in the county. He has a village of buildings on his farm, and is surrounded by trees anda grove of his own planting. He had 3 children - Annis E., Owen B., and Ella A. Owen is assisting his father in the care and management of the farm. They pay much attention to stock raising. Daniel Bassett - Biographical and Genealogical Record Pages 704-706 Honored and highly esteemed by everyone who knows him, Daniel Bassett, of Groveland township, LaSalle county, is a sterling representative of two of the oldest families of New England and possesses many of the traits of character for which his sturdy ancestors were renowned. He adheres to the same high principles of daily life, upholds the same ideas of religion and religious liberty, and has the same love for the cause of education and every power making toward the uplifting and progress of the race. In tracing his lineage it is found, by old records, that his ancestor, William Bassett, emigrated from England to Boston, Masschusetts, in 1639, and located at a village called Hamden, about three miles north of New Haven, Connecticut. He married a Miss Ives. They had one son, John, who was born in 1653, and died February 8, 1714. He served in the state militia, and, being appointed as captain of a company of New Haven troops, always afterward went by the title of Captain Bassett. He married Mercy Grigson, and their son John, born in 1691, became a personage of influence in his time. He represented the town of New Haven in the state legislature for a number of sessions, and was appointed cornet of a company of home guards. He owned considerable property, and was highly respected. He died March 27, 1757, aged sixty-six years. His wife was Elizabeth Thompson, and one of his children, John, was born in 1717, and married Sarah Eaton, a granddaughter of the first governor of the New Haven colony, and died when sixty years of age, February 12, 1777. Their son, Levi, born in 1747, married Mabel Atwater, and had five children, namely; Esther, Eaton, Lyman, Sallie and Leverett. He departed this life September 6, 1816, when sixty-nine years old. Leverett Ives Bassett, the father of our subject, was born in Litchfield county, Connecticut, and died on the same old homestead where he first saw the light. He married Linda Holt, a native of the same county, and they led the peaceful, industrious lives of agriculturists. Her father, Daniel Holt, also a Connecticut farmer, came from one of the oldest families in that state. His ancestor, William Holt, came from England and was one of the early settlers of New Haven, and was one of the seven persons who signed the New Haven constitution on the 1st of July, 1664. He died at Wallingford, Connecticut, September 1, 1683, aged seventy-three years. Daniel Holt, above mentioned, was the eldest of twelve children, and was born in East New Haven, July 5, 1767. On the 12th of January, 1789, he married Hannah, a daughter of Joseph and Hannah Holt, born August 17, 1767, and died December 14, 1839. They were the parents of five children, namely; Daniel, Hiram, Jeremiah, Hannah and Linda. Daniel Holt, who died June 23, 1834, when in his sixty-eighth year, removed to Northbury (subsequently, Plymouth, and no Thomaston) in 1789, and thence to Harwinton, where the remainder of his life was spent. Mrs. Linda (Holt) Bassett was born May 23, 1800, and died on Christmas day, 1854. Later Levrett I. Bassett wedded Hannah, sister of his first wife, and she lived to attain the extreme age of one hundred and one years. Mr. Bassett was called to his reward, April 4, 1863. Of ten children born in his family, four were sons, and of the entire number six survive, namely; Daniel, our subject; Levi; Annis. the widow of Stiles Hotchkiss; Mary, the wife of William W. Clemence; Mrs. Lois B. Coe, of Connecticut; and George, of Cleveland, Ohio. The birth of Daniel Bassett took place in the country where so many generations of his forebears had passed the span of life, the date of this being February 16, 1823. He grew to manhood on a farm and received a very "common" school educaton. In August, 1852, he was united in marriage to Miss Amy Elvira Barker, a daughter of Daniel and Amy (Pardy) Barker, and one week afterward the young couple started for the new home which they were to found on the broad prairies of Illinois. They located near West Hallock, Peoria county, buying a quarter-section of land, to the cultivation of which Mr. Bassett devoted his chief energy for many years. In 1865 he removed to his present homestead in Groveland township. Here he has owned, previous to allotting to his children, five hundred and sixty acres, finely improved, having a substantial dwelling and other farm buildings, and all of the comforts and conveniences deemed necessary in modern life. Mr. Bassett has been an industrious, hard-working man, useful in his community, upright and just in all of his transactions, and is wholly worthy the high esteem in which he is held. For almost forty-six years, Mr. Bassett found a faithful companion and sharer of his joys and sorrows in the person of his devoted wife. She was a lady of rare Christian virtues, and was loved by all who knew her. As is her husband, she was a consistent member of the Congregational church, and nobly strove to do her duty toward all mankind. She received the summons to the mansions above in April, 1898, when she was in her seventy-second year. The three children of Mr. and Mrs. Bassett are: Annis Elvira, Owen B. and Ella A. The elder daughter married Joseph Bane, since deceased, and their children are named respectively Daniel Hubert and Ira Owen. Owen B., the only son of our subject, is unmarried, and resides at home. Ella A. first married Wiley Marshall and had one child, Edna, and is now the wife of C. R. Hinton. Mr. Bassett has kept posted in all of the public affairs of this country, deeming this the duty of every patriotic citizen, but he has never been an aspirant to official distinction, and has resolutely kept out of politics. Since becoming a voter he has cast his ballot for the nominees of the Whig and Republican parties. | Bassett, Daniel (I787)

Loney, 1417 South Maple, Spokane, Washington (1930's) My father was an optician and quite an inventor, having at one time as many as 200 patents registered. Worked on invention similar to Holland tunnel machines (Discussed several times with Holland), also window shades, traps, etc. Had a complete small shop in back of his optical shop in Georgetown, D.C. for turning out models. He went to Kansas at age of six, his father ran post office and general store in Kansas (1858), built first church and first to be buried there - Hartford, Kan. He returned to Mass. shortly afterwards (due to his parents deaths), but during that time lived with Indians (after their death and while waiting for his uncle to arrive, via Prairie schooner, from St. Louis). Some years later my father guided in the mountains at Lake Placid, N.Y. later met Robert Louis Stevenson, and knew him well, thence moved to N.Y. City and worked in a shop on Madison Ave. in opticians' shop. One winter day they took a team and buggy and went to visit Bill. A big spring at the lower end of the Papesh Place had laid down a sheet of ice across the road. One of the horses slipped and fell, causing the wagon to lurch, throwing Mrs. Bassett on her head on the frozen ground. They righted things, and Mrs. Bassett appeared OK. They continued on to Bassett Creek. Betty prepared tea for them, and Mrs. Bassett proceeded to put spoonful after spoonful of sugar in her tea. That was the first indication that her head had been injured, but from that time on she was never in good mental health. When Hattie married Harry Bray, she moved to the deer Lodge area and took her mother with her. Mrs. Bassett died not long after the move at Warm Springs. Fred worked at the Goffner Sawmill, above the Taylor Place in Mol Heron Creek, and became acquainted with Cinnabar Basin. He moved to the Basin around 1895, and settled where Al and Judy Jensen now live (on the Sargent Ranch). On Nov. 26, 1897, he married Leah Smith, whose family lived on the place which was later proved up on by the Hesit family. (He was 34 and she was 21.) Their first daughter, Florence, was born Sept. 22, 1898. So for around ten years, the two Bassett families lived on opposite sides of the Yellowstone River. To visit each other or to trade work, they had to cross the river at a ford just above the present Corwin Bridge. Florence can even remember them hauling a threshing machine across the ford. She also recalls one time when her family went to visit Bill and Betty. They took a team and buggy. One of the horses was a mare which had a foal, which they allowed to tag along, as they were to be gone overnight. The river was high, and when the team plunged into the water at the ford, the colt swam ahead of the team and became lodged between the horses, under the tongue. Fred had to crawl out onto the tongue to push the colt forward and around in front of the team to prevent it from drowning. Bill and Betty ranched on Bassett Creek for a number of years. Their children were Harvey (Ethel Rigler's father), Lester, Shelby, Nellie (who died when she was 8-12 years old, and is buried in the Gardiner Cemetery), Nora (who married Bill Jones), and Wildie (born about 1905). At a time when buffalo were near extinction, buffalo were a problem on this ranch, especially in the spring. On any given day, a person could round a corner of the barn while doing chores, and run into a cantankerous old bull. The bulls were known to breed their cows, and they had some hybrid calves. So they tried to run the animals off, with varying success. In 1908, Bill sold the Bassett Creek place to the group which built the Corwin Springs Hotel and Plunge in 1909. The existing Corwin Bridge was built at that time. Subsequently, Betty operated a boarding house on Main Street in Livingston, and Bill set up a blacksmith shop in Fishtail. They are both buried at Fishtail. (After Bill died, in her later years, Betty married S.M. Fitzgerald, the man who originally led the Bassett family to Montana.) Phillip Bassett History of Park County, Montana 1984 Phillip Bassett and Mary Berry were married in Connecticut. They moved to California by covered wagon in the early 1860's. They farmed in the Red Bluff area, where he also worked as an architect. They raised seven children: Bill, Wayne, Charlie, George (Gene?), Hattie, Fred, and Abbie (in order). By the time the family was grown, Phillip and Mary had a fine home in Oakland. In 1880, S.M. Fitzgerald was promoting a horse concession in Yellowstone Park. He made a trip to California to purchase horses. Bill Bassett signed on with him to drive 50 to 75 head back to Yellowstone. When the horses were delivered, Bill found work with the Mulherin family. They lived at the mouth of Mol Heron (Mulherin) Creek (near the current Trestle Ranch buildings, but down on the creek). Fred came to Montana around 1881 (when he was 18). He built the little stone house at the head of Yankee Jim Canyon that was removed during recent highway construction. Shortly thereafter he settled at the mouth of Bassett Creek and established squatter's rights. In the meantime, Bill had married a Mulherine girl (Betty) and had started a family. So Fred traded his rights on Bassett Creek to his older brother for two saddle horses. When the Valley was surveyed, Bill filed on the homestead. At about this time, Phillip and Mary sold their home and moved to the Bassett Creek place with their daughter Hattie, where they lived with Bill and Betty. The ranch house was the current "Ranch Kitchen" restaurant. Fred worked at various jobs, including hunting, trapping, breaking horses, and freighting from Horr (Electric) to Aldredige. He took squatter's rights on the Papesh Place. The Upper Yellowstone country didn't meet Phillip's high expectations. He grew despondent, and committed suicide by taking poison in early May, 1884. He was buried in the cemetery at Mammoth. | Bassett, William Daniel (I1468)

They located near Springfield, Missouri, in 1830, where Mr. Bass homesteaded and entered land, and on which he resided until his death, which occurred about 1863. He was quite a hunter, and killed many deer and a few bears. Eight sons and five daughters grew to mature years, and all became the heads of families, and five sons and five daughters are living at the present time. John Bass was reared in Greene County, and was there married in 1850 to Miss Samentha Owens, who was born and reared in Greene County, and immediately engaged in tilling the soil on his own responsibility. He became the owner of his present property in 1868, which consists of 125 acres, but at one time his land amounted to 400 acres, the most of which he gave to his children. He has about 100 acres of cleared land, and a substantial residence and other buildings. His wife died in 1856, leaving two children: Sarah C., wife of W.A. Stratton, of Greene County, and Jasper A.J., who is married and resides in Webster County. In 1857 Mr. Bass married his present wife, Miss Angeline Hartley, who was born in Tennessee and reared in Webster County, being a daughter of Jesse Hartley. Their union has been blessed in the birth of four children: Jesse W., who is married and is a resident of the county; John W., also married; Margaret F., wife of David Bodenhamer, and Benton, a young man of eighteen years. Mr. and Mrs. Bass are worthy and consistent members of the Missionary Baptist Church. | Bass, John Wallace (I16)
