William L. Bassett Passes Away At His Home
Norwood – William Leroy Bassett, 84, died Saturday afternoon at 1:30
at his home on Pleasant St. Death was attributed to a heart attac
Mr. Bassett was born in Malone Nov. 11, 1863, son of the late John and
Mary McDowell Bassett. He came to Norwood in 1917 as a clerk in the drugstore
owned by H.L. McNulty. Mr. Bassett became owner of the business in Sept. 1925
and retired in August 1946.
He married Ella Lockwood Nov. 20, 1896. She died in 1897. He later
married the present Mrs. Bassett, then of New York City.
Mr. Bassett was a member of What Cheer Lodge of the Masonic Order.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the
home on Pleasant St. The Rev. David E. Hayman, pastor of the Congregational
Church of Norwood, will officiate. Burial will be in Madrid Cemeter
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Sarah Bassett, a daughter by his first
marriage, Mrs. Marion Shepard, San Francisco, a grandson, William Shepard of
Ossining, and a nephew, Roy Bassett of Canton.
Acting bearers at the funeral will be Arch Roy, William Kitney,
Charles Post, Almon Austin, Mark Dailey and James McCormick. Honorary bearers
will be Eugene Mott, Leo Donovan, Harry Farmer, Clayton Bush, Leon McCarger
and Edward E. Wright.

William L. Bassett - One of the progressive business men of Norwood,
where he is engaged in the drug business, is Mr. Bassett, who is a native of
Franklin County. He was born at Malone, Nov. 11, 1863, the son of John and
Mary (McDowell) Bassett.
John Bassett was born in Vermont. He spent many years in the employ of
the Rutland Railroad Company, and met with an accidental death in 1869. He is
buried at Malone. Mr. Bassett was a Republican, a member of the Methodi
Church and Masonic Lodge. His wife was born in Clinton, County, N.Y., and is
deceased. Their children were : 1. Frank, who died in 1906. 2. William L., the
subject of this sketch.
William L. Bassett attended the public schools of Norfolk and Madrid.
He spent seven years as a clerk in the employ of the A.T. Hepburn Drug Company
at Madrid. He then was located in Boston, Mass., four years, after which he
spent 26 years as a druggist in New York City. He was identified with the G.P.
Knapp Drug Company for ten years, the B.F. Quackenbush Drug Company for 15
years, and Ricker & Hagerman Drug Company for one year. In 1917 Mr. Bassett
came to Norwood as a clerk in the drug store of H.L. McNulty. He became owner
of the business in September, 1925.
Mr. Bassett was married (first) on Nov. 20, 1896, to Miss Ella
Lockwood, of Madrid, the daughter of Edward and Mary Lockwood. The former died
in 1902 and the latter in 1900. Both are buried at Madrid. Ella (Lockwood)
Bassett died in 1897 and is buried at Madrid. Their daughter, Marian B., born
in 1897, is the widow of Wilbur Shepherd and lives at Seattle, Wash. Mr.
Bassett was married (second) on April 19, 1916, to Miss Sarah D. Phillips, of
New York City.
Mr. Bassett has always been a Republican. He belongs to the Masonic
Lodge and Chamber of Commerce.

Dear Mr. Bassett
Replying to your letter of the 18th I regret that I am able to furnish you
very little information concerning my Father and relatives.
I have a faint recollection of my Mother telling me that my Father was a
native of Vermont State and during his early life resided in Waddington N.Y.
and there married Mary McDowell (my Mother). From Waddington I think they went
to Malone N.Y. where three children were born, Girl who died in infancy, Frank
and myself.
I was born the year 62 and my Father was killed in a railroad accide
Malone three years after, my brother was nine years older than me.
Father had two brothers William and Edward who resided in the vicini
Malone until their death. This is about all the information I can give. Family
records have disappeared and relatives passed away.
