Civil War Vet Will Be Buried Here Tomorrow
Cassius Bassett, Pioneer had Lived Here Thirty-four Years
The funeral services for Cassius M. Bassett, pioneer and Civil war veteran, who died Tuesday morning at his home, E2644 Thirtieth avenue will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 from the Smith & Company undertaking parlors.
Mr. Bassett resided in Spokane for 34 years.
The deceased was born in the state of Ohio, Une 23, 1844, and in the early 50?s moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James L. Bassett, to Olmstead, Minn. He enlisted in company H of the 11th Minnesota regiment, August 24, 1864, and was honorably discharge from the service at Gallatin, Tenn., June 26, 1865. He was married December 27, 1862, at Blue Earth, Minn., to Hannah Francis. He moved to Spokane in 1884, and lived in the same house in which he first lived in Spokane until the time of his death. Mr. Bassett was a charter member of Reno post of the G.A.R., and was also a member of the Spokane Pioneer society.
He leaves six children, 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The children surviving are Clifford A. Bassett, Seattle; Bert Bassett, Seattle; Mrs. J.E. Shepard, Portland; Mrs. Carl E. Myhre, Mrs. Ray Alison and Miss Rose Bassett, all living at E2644 Thirtieth avenue, Spokane.
Will Attend Funeral
Members of the Clara Barton fortress No. 6, Daughters of the G.A.R, will meet at the Review building Sunday afternoon at 2 o?clock to attend the funeral of Comrade Cassius Bassett. The funeral will be held from the parlors of Smith & Co. at 2:30 Members are requested by the commander, Mrs. F.F. Tremain, to wear their badges.
A certificate of record states "This certifies that Cassius M. Bassett enlisted from Olmsted County, Minnesota, to serve one year or during the war, and was mustered into the United States service at Camp Miller, Minnesota, on
the 24th day of August, 1864, as Private of Captain Joseph S. Eaton's Company "H", 11th Regiment Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. Colonel James B. Gilfillan commanding, Lieutenant-Colonel John Ball."
