Excerpt from Pierre's French Ice Cream Co., Cleveland, Ohio Dairy Field, May 2003 Pierre's began more than 70 years ago in what was called Pierre's Ice Cream Shop, which opened its doors in 1932. Gourmet ice creams were prepared fresh each day in the back of the store and sold by the cone or cup, or hand-packed to take home. The company's founder, Alexander "Pierre" Basset, dreamed of marketing a French ice cream - the very richest type of ice cream - which would be unsurpassed. Popularity for Pierre's products grew rapidly. The small shop quickly began delivering its specialty ice creams to restaurants, country clubs and gourment markets. In the 1960s, Sol Roth acquired Pierre's, and today the company is still owned an operated by the Roth family.
