Jenkins indicts 4 in Millen murder
By Pat Powers, Chronicle Staff Writer
MILLEN, Ga. ? The estranged wife, two of her relatives and another jman have been arrested and charged with the murder of a 41-year-old Millen businessman found brutally slain in his home last year.
Those accused of the shooting death of Curtis Douglas Bassett include his estranged wife, Sharon McMillan Bassett, 27, her father, James Allen McMillan, 54; and her brother, Kevin McMillan, 25.
Also charged is Tony McMillan, 21, no relation to the other McMillan defendants. He appeared as a witness last week in the Kathleen Blackburn custody hearing in Waynesboro.
Bassett?s body was discovered the morning of Oct. 12 by his sister-in-law, who had gone looking for him after he failed to show for work, according to Millen Police Chief Neil Casey.
Bassett, manager of a Millen convenience store, had been shot about nine times in the front and back with a .22-caliber rifle, Casey said. He apparently was shot in the living room of his house although his body was found in a rear utility room, he said.
Bassett was last seen alive around 11 p.m. on Oct. 11.
The state probably will seek the death penalty against all four, according to Lane Johnston, district attorney for the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit.
Case said no exact motive for slaying has been determined, although it might have stemmed from a ?possible love triangle episode? involving Bassett, Mrs. Bassett and her boyfriend, Tony McMillan.
?There?s a lot of speculation but nothing concrete yet,? he said.
Investigators were unable to find a coin and silver certificate collection believed owned by Bassett suggesting he may have been robbed, Casey added.
All four defendants moved from Millen about a year ago and had lived in Newnan prior to their arrest, Case said.
A Jenkins County grand jury on Tuesday returned murder indictments against the four. They were arrested without incident Tuesday afternoon by Coweta County authorities and returned to Millen on Wednesday, Carey said.
The four are being held in the Jenkins County Jail without bond.
?Bassett?s murder was a brutal type killing,? Case said. ?The man Bassett was well-thought of?, he said.
The grand jury also returned burglary indictments against the four defendants charging them with the July 1982 burglary of a Jenkin County residence.
Defendant Kevin McMillan is serving a sentence for a t County burglary and was brought from the Georgia Diagnostic Center in Jackson to face the murder charge, Casey said.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Lamon Gillis assisted in the investigation along with Millen police and Jenkins County Sherriff?s Department officials.
The four defendants had been suspects in the case from the beginning, although they were not formally charged until this week, Casey Said.
?In all honesty, we felt from the start we knew who did it,? he said.
Johnston said the four likely will be tried in a specially called trial, possibly in April.
