A Retired Tobacconist Dies
Plainfield, New Jersey - November 16 - Walter A. Bass, one of the best known tobacco merchants in the country, died at his home in the city last night after an illness of four weeks. Mr. Bass was born in Baltimore, and during the late war a tobacco plantation, which he owned, was confiscated by the government. Afterwards he moved to New York, and was one of the principal organizers of the Blackwell’s Durham Tobacco Company and for many years was at its head. He retired from active business several years ago. He is survived by two sons, Walter A., Jr. and William F., both in business in New York, and four daughters, two of whom are teachers in the Plainfield public schools.
