Fights Burglar In Home; Is Shot Through Hand
Jacob Bass Grapples Intruder He Sees Hiding Under Table
Negro Escapes.
Struggling for the possession of a revolver with a negro burglar in his home at 1722 7th street about 3:30 o?clock this morning. Jacob Bass, clothier, was shot through the right hand and cut severely on his face by the butt of the gun. The merchant probably owes his life to his presence of mind in quickly raising his hands to shield his face from the bullet.
After wounding Bass, the negro made his escape through the rear door. leaving a trail of foot and finger prints as the result of falling into a tub of water in making a hasty exit. Bass was taken to Freedmen?s Hospital. His condition is not regarded as serious.
The merchant discovered the burglar crouched under a dining room table while he was fumbling in the refrigerator for milk to stop the walls of his hungry four-year-old son. The negro rushed at him and the struggle for possession of the gun followed. Breaking Bass? hold on him, the robber fired the shot which the merchant?s hand prevented from striking him in the face.
Headquarters Detectives Sweeny, Waldron, Jackson and Jones, who are investigating the case, expect to make an arrest soon.
