Stephen Bassett's father died before he was twelve years old and on 2 Mar 1720 he was apprenticed to Jacob Miller, a saddler, for seven years. Soon after the termination of this contract, he entered the leather business in New York City, where it is recorded that he operated a tap-room in connection with his business at Pearl and Queen Streets. About 1730, he opened an extensive tannery at Acquackanonk, New Jersey, it being the first established industry of that region.

I, Stephen Bassett of Essex County, merchant; wife, Ann, to have use of all real and personal estate and at her death or marriage estate is to be divided among my children, Ann, Mary, Susannah and Eleana. Daughters, Susannah and Eleana, when they come of age or are married to have £60 each for their outset. Executors: Wife, Ann, and my friend, Peter Simmons, saddler.
