      Obituary
      Charles M. Bass

Charles M. Bass, son of the late Zebulon and Sally Bass, was born at Gananoque, Canada, Dec. 4, 1817, and died at the home of his son-in-law, Peter Mayer in the town of Clayton Dec. 29, 1906 aged 89 years and 25 days. Mr. Bass came with his parents to live on Grindstone Island when a child and grew up there to young manhood. He was the oldest of a family of nine children and call have passed on to the Spirit world but one, William Bass, of the town of Clayton. He was married to Maria Morse of Gouverneru in 1843 and they took up their residence in Rockport, Can., where they toiled together for eleven years. They then came to the town of Claytojn, Jefferson County, where Mr. Bass was one of the first to operate a market garden in the town of Clayton.
During his last years he lived with his daughter, Mrs. Mayer, who cared for him tenderly and where he died a peaceful and happy death.
Mr. Bas was the father of nine children, three of whom died in infancy. Six grew up to manhood and womanhood, Josephine, Olive, Mary, Celia, Lincoln and Cyrus.
His wife and one daughter, Olive, have died, leaving three daughters and two sons to mourn his loss. He was converted about 25 years ago, from which time he has been a faithful worker for his Master, going about to school houses holding revival meetings and going from house to house singing and praying with the people, urging the unsaved to repent of their sins.
His church relations were with the Free Methodist, they coming into his neighborhood and forming a class about the time he was converted. He was a very earnest, active member. Though the class scattered and disbanded, yet he was ever in close sympathy with his church and its doctrines. In his life that the most irreligious had respect for his religion. Thus with Mr. Bass passes away not only another old landmark but an earnest Christian a tru brother and a loving father.
His funeral was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church of St. Lawrence, Rev. H. Casler officiating, using the text Mr. Bass had himself selected, 2 Tim 4: 7-8. His remains rest in the Union Cemetery beside those of his wife.
