During the week, the barn originally belonging to the Taylor property at the
head of Mangin Alley, was moved across the rear end of the alley to the rear
of the Julius Rawson house, Mr. Rawson having purchased this some time ago.

Rufus H. Bassett, a resident of Canton for a great many years, died at his
home here last evening at about six o'clock, following an illness of several

In the death of Rufus Henry Bassett, which occurred at his home in this
village Monday evening, April nineteenth, one of the most respected residents
of Canton passed away. Mr. Bassett was born in Canton on the seventeenth of
August, eighteen sixty and has lived in this vicinity all his life. He was
the son of John Nelson and Almira Rawson Bassett and the only brother of the
late Dr. John Nelson Bassett, who practiced medicine here for many years.
The writer of this brief sketch has known Mr. Bassett for forty-seven years.
He can say with the utmost sincerity that he has never known a more
industrious, upright or cleaner man than Rufus Bassett. He commanded t
confidence of all who knew him. He was thoroughly dependable in every place.
He cared for whatever was placed in his charge as if it were his own and his
word was as good as his bond. He was free from bad habits and clean of
speech. The writer does not recall ever hearing him use an objectionab
word, or speak unkindly of anyone.
He leaves, beside his wife, four children, one son and three daughters, Carl
and Mrs. William Johnson of Massena, and Anna and Beulah who live at home.
The funeral was held from his late home Wednesday afternoon of last week, the
services being conducted by Dr. James M. Payson and was largely attended, many
members of the Canton Lodge of Odd Fellows of which Mr. Bassett was a member,
being present. The floral offerings were unusually beautiful, testifying to
the esteem of many friends. Burial at Fairview.

      Obituary of John Henry Wade
Among the laundrymen who tried and quit was Rufus H. Bassett, brother
of Dr. John N. Bassett, Esbon C. Tupper, Alvah J. Runions, the photo ma
William C. Case, Orris J. Southworth, and probably numerous others. Canton at
one time had its Chinese laundry on Hodskin street and women were horrified to
see the Chink take water in his mouth and spray the clothes while ironing.
