- 3B325435. Harlow Gillette Bassett, son of Loren Elias and Rachel (English) Bassett, was born 29 Mar 1840 in Bennington, Wyoming County, New York. He died 4 Feb 1911 in Ionia, Big Horn County, Wyoming. He married Mary Catherine Werts in Aug 1862 in Woodburn, McCoupin County, Illinois. He was in the Civil War.

Harlow Bassett was a miner and farmer, a native of New York, who was brought to this state when a child of two months. His father soon afterward went west, leaving the child with a family named McCauley and word came several years later of his having been killed in the state of Utah. Harlow Bassett, was a Union soldier, whose name may be found on the roster as first lieutenant of a company in the Ninth Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted at the very outbreak of the war, responding to President Lincoln's first call. After the expiration of his three months' enlistment, he veteranized and enlisted in the service for a three years term in the Army of Cumberland. He was made first lieutenant in 1864, in which year he enlisted for the third time. He served until the close of the war, thus making his service of four years and seven months duration. His record is the record of a brave man, for he participated in some of the most trying campaigns of the rebellion, under the commands of General Thomas and General Sherman. He was injured in the battles of Shiloh and Corinth...After the war, Harlow Bassett returned to Fosterburg and was an active farmer from 1867 to 1875 in Jackson County after which he returned to Fosterburg, only to move again, after two years to the state of Kansas. In the latter commonwealth, he continued to follow the same occupation, and kept his eighty acre farm there until 1886. The mother of the family passed away in 1881, and five years later the family broke up and scattered over the country. Harlow passed to his eternal reward on Feb. 4, 1911 at the ripe old age of seventy-two.

Harlow Bassett had one brother, LeRoy, who was a professional gambler and owned a plush gambling house in Kansas City. The gambling casino was operated by LeRoy and a half brother, whose name may have been Edwin, since it is known that Harlow did have a brother by that name. The story is told that at the end of each day's business, the two men would spread on a table all the silver taken in, and without counting, LeRoy would "cut" the pile in two with his hand and each man would take "half".
LeRoy gave Harlow a farm in Brown County, Kansas, on which he and Mary and their chlidren were living at the time of her death from childbirth.

The ages listed for Harlow in the censuses and other records make his calculated year of birth sometime between 1836 and 1841. It is evident that he was born before his mother died. She was deceased before June 1839. Harlow was most likely born in 1838.
BIRTHPLACE: Harlow's place of birth is listed as "near Bennington, New York" in his pension file. New York is his stated birthplace in the 1880, 1900, and 1910 censuses and in W.T. Norton, comp. & ed., CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF MADISON COUNTY, ILLINOIS AND ITS PEOPLE, 1812 to 1912, Vol. II (Chicago & New York: The Lewis Pub. Co., 1912), pp. 1790 & 791.
Illinois is his listed birthplace in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.
MARRIAGE: In an affadavit dated 17 Dec 1897 when Harlow filed for a civil war pension he stated his marriage date as Aug 1862 at Woodburn, Macoupin Co, ILL. to Mary Catherine Werts by John C. Strong, a minister.
This marriage record has not been found in the Macoupin County marriage records.
Harlow Gillette's obituary lists his marriage date as 22 Aug 1863. See ref. in death entry below.
DEATH: Obituary in the LOVELL CHRONICLE, Sat. 11 Feb 1911: "Harlow Bassett of Ionia passed away Saturday morning, February 4th, 1911 at 9:45 of pneumonia after an illness of about ten days, aged 72 years, 10 months and 5 days."

1910 Census of Sarver Precinct, Big Horn, WY, p. 13A (FHL & BYU film #1375758). In this census Harlow was living with his son, Fred H. and information on Harlow included: Harlow G. Bassett, father, age 70, wd., born NY, has own income. Census taken 18-20 May 1910.
MILITARY: Harlow Gillette Bassett served in the civil war between 19 Apr 1861 and 2 June 1865. He was injured in the battle at Shiloh on 7 Apr 1862. Served as a private in Co. G & F, 9th Ill. Mr. Bassett was an old soldier, having enlisted in the three mos. call then re-enlisted for three years and at the end of that service he again enlisted for 100 days and was commissioned as first lieutenant February 14, 1865. He received a pension of $15 per month.
RESIDENCE: In 1866 Harlow Bassett was living in Township 6 Range 9 (Fosterburg) in Madison County, Illinois. See James T. Hair GAZETTEER OF MADISON COUNTY, ILLINOIS, 1866 (BYU F168, 2nd item).
In an affidavit included in his pension file, Harlow Bassett of Afton, Uinta, Wyoming gives the following information pertaining to his residence: After the Civil War he lived in Fosterburg, Madison Co., Ill. up to 1875 where he worked as a coal miner most of the time. His next permanent residence was Atchison, Kas. where he worked as a day laborer. Next he moved to Afton, Wyo. While raising his family he worked and traveled over a great deal of the country stopping from a few days up to a year at different points, but he had his home the longest at the places named.
