In Loving Memory of my son James David Bass from his mother, Jo Estelle Lindsay Bass
David was born at the Schumpert Catholic Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana on 12 March 1953. After a gentle birth he came into the world smiling and he thrived. Somehow when he was 2 years old, he contacted a non-lung strain of polio. In 1955, He was diagnosed by our family doctor with fever from a virus and on Friday of that week his fever was gone and he seemed to be over it. However when he was trying to play on the living room floor he could not get up. Sunday I determined to take him to a specialist. Early Monday morning I called our pediatrician and told him I thought my son had polio. Two of them, met me at the back door of the clinic and immediately performed the spinal tap which was polio positive although the count was now much lower than when he had the fever. They sent me to the polio center at Confederate Memorial Hospital, where he was in rehab for several months from polio damage to his right arm and left leg. Again at age 3 David came down with the 3rd strain of polio, and damage settled in the old places right arm and left leg. David?s case was written up in the medical journals in 1955-56. David had therapy and operations to lengthen and stretch his left leg tendon to even up his legs up to the age of 15. He was also smiling and never complained. He took his difficulty in stride and overcame the weakness in his left leg as much as he could. His brother Jack defended him from from bullying kids.
David graduated from Southwood High School in 1971. As a teen he worked at Mr. Smith?s Pizza Inn for several years; He attended LSU Shreveport, and worked at a local bank on the night shift; and at Polan Chain Saw Co. He was a phlebotomist at Highland Hospital, and then at the Confederate Memorial Hospital cytogenetics laboratory with Dr. Mayliss. David had a camera-eye, and he naturally moved toward photography as a profession.
In 1987 Maureen Eastwood flew from England and married David in Cocoa Beach, Florida. They formed a business together, Le Image Pet Photographry. James was the pet photographer for the National Dog Groomers of America grooming shows. He held events from Flordia, SC NC MD VA and GA AL MS LA TX TN KY AR OK MO and CO photographing people and their pets at Grooming Shops and veterinarians. His last event was in the Spring of 2019 and he had future booked events for this fall and Christmas of 2019.
Davd became ill about 4 years ago with cellulitus and swelling in both legs. I am forever grateful to his wife, Maureen, she was his mainstay, and she helped him in everyway. He was given the last rites on Thursday night by Sacred Heart Priest, Father Johnathon. David passed peacefully of natural causes of liver cancer about 8:45 pm on Friday, July 26, 2019 at the Advent Hospital in Orlando, Florida. His wife Maureen, his mother Josephine, and his sister Becky and Becky?s husband Vince were by his bedside.
