Helen Ruth (O'Brian) Bass, 80, passed away July 13, 2006, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital from complications following surgery. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 AM at Grace Lutheran Church with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial will take place 1 PM Wednesday at Wilson Cemetery in Independence, Iowa.
Helen was born December 23, 1925, to George S. and Ruth Esther (Blad) O'Brian on a farm near Independence. She graduated from Jesup High in 1943. She married W. Duane Bass December 27, 1943, in Independence. They farmed near Independence until July of 1953, when they moved to Des Moines. She and her husband raised their family and were in sales and service work until 1973, when they moved to Camdenton, MO. While in Missouri, they owned a resort and retired in 1982. They moved back to Des Moines in 1997. Helen enjoyed and was devoted to her husband and family and "making memories" at all our family gatherings.
Helen is survived by husband Duane; son Larry (Diane) Bass; daughters Carla (Bill) Black and Judy (Rollie) Bramhall, all of Des Moines; sisters Eleanor (Carl) Van Tasell and Eunice (Gilbert) Hamilton, both of Independence; eight grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Helen was preceded in death by daughter Carol Ann; her parents and step-mother; two brothers; a sister; a sister-in-law and a step-mother.
The family requests any memorial contributions be made to Grace Lutheran Church.
