While growing up in Hartford, James enjoyed bowling and ice skating on the local ponds and ice rinks. He started his career at the Hartford Times as a newspaper carrier and later took a position with Hamilton Standard in Windsor Locks. In 1943, James left work and drafted into the U.S. Army to serve during World War II. During his retirement, he enjoyed gardening around his home, fishing in the Farmington and Connecticut Rivers and in Long Island Sound off the coast of Stonington where his wife Rita was from. He was talented at fixing things around his home and always had a project that he was involved in. A baseball fan his entire life, James rooted for the Brooklyn Dodgers as a young man and later for the New York Yankees. He was a talented investor and each morning he looked forward to reading the Wall Street Journal and following his stocks.
