Killed A Young Lady
Miss Mary Bassett of North Haven Struck by
an Engine While Returning Home
A fatal accident occurred at the Quinnipiac bridge, between Quinnipiac and North Haven, yesterday. Henry A. Bassett, who is employed at Capt. Craft's Quinnipiac Brick company's works, and who lives about half way between North Haven and Quinnipiac, had been in this city with his daughter Mary. aged 20 years, to purchase some goods. They returned to North Haven on the 3:20 train and started to walk back to their home on the railroad track. Just before they reached the bridge, Mr. Bassett looked around and saw the 3:29 express train coming. He warned his daughter not to go upon the bridge, but she did not heed his warning and ran ahead expecting to get across before the train. In her haste she slipped and fell and was immediately struck by the engine. Her body was thrown fully 40 feet. The train stopped and she was picked up. Death had been instantaneous. Medical Examiner Eliot was called. His examination showed the facts to be as named.
Miss Bassett was an only daughter and was one of the handsomest girls in North Haven. Her death is a great blow to her parents.
