Funeral services for George E. Bassett of 117 North Front Street, who died Wednesday at Veterans’ Hospital in New York City, were held from the home of his brother, Alfred, 74 Emerick Street on Saturday afternoon. The Reverend Stephen Conrad of Franklin Street A.M.E. Zion Church officiated. During the services Miss Van Der Zee sang two solos. Services were largely attended by relatives and friends and associates of the Veterans of Foreign Wars was present at the arrival of the remains from New York City. Friday evening I.B.P.O.E., Colonial City, No. 733, held their ritualistic services under the direction of Exalted Ruler Harvey Pennick. Joyce Schirick Post No. 1386, Veterans of Foreign Wars, held ritualistic services with Commander Howard Pangburn in charge. Also present were a number of members of Spanish-American War Veterans, Colonial Camp No. 75. The committal at the grave was by the Reverend Mr. Conrad. A V.F W. firing squad was under command of William Jordan and consisted of Harry Darling, Elmo Boogs, Scott Razey, Frank Laderway, Michael Evans, Joseph Perry, Chris Perry Sr., and Frank Stopskie. Taps were sounded by Howard S. Pangburn, commander. Bearers were James Van DeMark, Clarence Van DeMark, Clyde Brodhead, Henry Van Der Zee and William Bryant, all veterans of World War II, in uniform. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery at Saugerties.
