Dr. Robert Thomas Bass
BASS, DR. ROBERT THOMAS, 72, passed away on August 30th, 2006 following a courageous battle with cancer. Bob was the beloved husband of Jo Ann, son of Miriam, brother of Susan (David) and loving father of Bobby, Jeff (Vanessa), Cindy, Steve and Jodi as well as grandfather of Jessica (Jose), Lauren (Marco), Blake, Jonathan, Scott, Lily, Megan and great-grandfather of Alexandria. A lifelong resident of Miami Beach, he touched many lives in the local community with his generous spirit, easygoing manner and disarming sense of humor. Following his undergraduate education at the University of Florida (where he was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi) and graduate education at Northwestern Medical School, he served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force before establishing his vascular surgical practice on Miami Beach with Dr. Harold Unger and later, Dr. Stephen W. Unger. Although he practiced at several local hospitals, Mount Sinai Medical Center was where he devoted most of his career and where he served as past president of the medical staff. He was an avid traveler and had many wonderful adventures around the world. He also enjoyed traveling with friends where the camaraderie ended up being the highlight of the trip. No matter where he traveled, his sense of humor always took him places he never imagined he would go. Towards the end of his life, he fell in love with the mountains of North Carolina and chose to spend more and more time at their special place in Burnsville which was often filled with loving friends and family. He took up woodworking and hobbies like farming and driving a tractor, activities he was able to enjoy late into his illness with the help of his cousin and friend Alan. We will remember him most as a loving family man who always had a twinkle in his eye, a smile and the time and compassion for whoever needed him. A memorial service will be held at Temple Israel at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor and loving memory can be made to the Dade Community Foundation or Temple Israel where he had his Bar Mitzvah and worshipped throughout his life.
