      William E. Bassett
      Chief Petty Officer US Navy

I enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 8, 1941, the day after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
I was one of the lucky sailors who did not get wounded. However, I was out there in harm’s way in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets serving on all types of ships.
After Advanced Base Training, I went to the South Pacific, spending some time at Eniwetock and then we landed at Subic Bay in the Philippines.
I was a radioman, and we set up communication stations there and started communicating by Morse Code.
I was there when the war ended. I liked the Navy and kept re-listing, serving a total of 22 years.
I retired on June 10, 1963. The Navy made a man out of this Georiga boy. If I were young enough, I would gladly do it again.
