Bertrand H. Bassett (Picture in Naval uniform)
Bertrand H. Bassett, Sr., Cmdr. U.S. Navy (Ret), 73, of 3700 E. 11th Street, died Wednesday. In 1928 he was appointed a Lieutenant (J.G.) in the U.S. Navy serving this unit from 1940 to 1946, receiving Presidential unit citations and various commendations in the Navy. An island just north of Abappaomogan Island, was named for him for his efforts in establishing the LCI base for the Navy. He was also a member of every armed force unit of the U.S. system for defense except the Air Force during his military career. He is survived by his wife, Jean M.; son Bertrand H. Bassett Jr.; daughter, Marion J. Webb; Sister, Charlotte Hitchcock; 10 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Service will be today, Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel of B. W. Coon Funeral Home with Chaplain Ward McCabe officiating.
