Ruby Holman Bassett (picture included)
Ruby Holman Bassett, Gary, Indiana, Age 78 years, was born on march 31, 1927,
in Gary, Indiana, and ended her journey on Friday, October 20, 2006. She was a
graduate of Roosevelt High School Class of 1946. Ruby was united in marriage
to Leonard Bassett, Sr., for over 60 years. Ruby united with Jerusalem Baptist
Church in 1952 under the late Rev. E.B. Joyner. She loved the church and the
church loved her. She was a dedicated member of the Sanctuary Choir for 54
years serving as president for several years. She faithfully served her
constituents in the G5-55 precinct as Precinct Committee Person for over 40
years and also served as Co-captain of the 5th District. Ruby was a retiree
of the Gary Community Schools and School City Food Service. Ruby also worked
for the Calumet Township Assessors office, Lake County Commissioners office,
and Receptionist for the Lake County Court Building. Ruby was a loving wife,
mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Preceded in death by her father,
mother, 2 sisters and brother. She is survived by her husband, Leonard
Bassett, Sr.; four children, Leonard (Marsha) Bassett, Jr., of Florrisant, MO,
Dennis (Mary) Bassett of Rochester, NY, Leatha Harris of Grand Rapids, MI, and
Odetta (Virgil) Redd of Rochester, MI; 2 sisters, Joan D. Long and Roselee
Brooks; 9 grandchildren, Dennis LaShun Bassett, Dawn Bassett, Brad Elliott,
Vasco Bassett, Prim Rogers, Ronda Robers, Brandon Harris, Shona Redd,
Christina Redd; 2 great-grandchildren, Jah Mohommed and Haj Mohommed; special
friends, Arnetta Davis, Deloris Darrington, John & Frankie Wilcox; and a host
of other relatives and friends. Visitation Friday, October 27, 2006, from 12
noon to 8:00 p.m. with family hour from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Guy & Allen Chapel,
2959 West 11th Avenue. Funeral services Saturday, October 28, 2006, at 11:00
a.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1741 Fillmore Street, Gary, IN. Rev. Isaac
Culver officiating. Interment Oak Hill Cemetery. Professional services
