John and Ola Bassett with son, John R. Bassett, Jr. moved from Blakes, Virginia to Gwynn's Island, Virginia in 1933. He built their home on Gwynn's Island next to a shop he had built previously. They moved into their new home in January 1936. He was a good carpenter and mechanic.
He was wounded in World War I in three places. He was shot in the back, it came out of his chest. He was also shot in the right calf of his leg, it went through and hit the heel of his left foot. This was done by a machine gun. His job was "runner". He ran back and forth from commanders to the front lines to give orders from command. No radios.
