Saturday, April 25th, 2020 Eugene William Bass, 65, of Martinsburg passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2020 at Berkeley Medical Center. Born on February 9, 1955, in Washington County Maryland, he was the son of the late Earnest William and Mabel May (Giffin) Bass. Eugene, also known by Gene or Geno to friends, was a 1974 graduate of Bladensburg High School. He was a member of the Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was extremely passionate about the department. Gene received an award in April 1989 for his bravery and selfless acts to save individuals from a burning vehicle. Gene?s favorite jobs in his lifetime were being a limo driver for Detailed Destinations and working at Bear?s Repair as a mechanic and later in the office. Gene will forever be known for his bold and unforgettable personality. He loved racing Slot Cars, watching NASCAR, and watching area high school sporting events. He always cheered on the kids in his life in their sporting events or academic achievements. Gene also enjoyed visiting different railroads with his wife Mary and taking various train rides with her. They also loved going for car rides and visiting the ocean together. Gene is survived by his wife, Mary Garner Bass; two daughters Cheryl Hawkins and Tina Perry; four step-daughters Dawn Deal-Wells (Neal) , Tammy Deal (Lay), Amanda Churchwell (James), and Kathleen Norton (Charles); one step-son James Churchwell (Gina); five grandchildren Scott, Jewel, MaLesha, Martina, Myles; seven step-grandchildren Caitlyn, Darryl, Ryan, Lily, Kye, Sierra, and Carlton Jr; one step-great grandson Hassan; siblings Kevin Bass (Debbie), Patty Bass, Keith Bass (Pam), Curtis Bass(Tammy), Robin Gatrell (Scott), Doug Bass (Leah); numerous nieces and nephews, including Ernie Bass (Sarah Elizabeth) and Sarah Beth Lillard (Mike) as well as their children Will and Emma Bass and Ava May and Annalynn Lillard, who were very special to Gene. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Earnest and Ida Bass, grandparents Samuel and Sarah Giffin, and brother Dannie Bass. Due to the ongoing COVID-19, a memorial service is to be held at a later date when it is safe to gather together.
