Vivian J. Bassett
Died April 18, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Vivian J. Bassett, 70, of Traverse City and Livonia, died Sunday, April 18, at her home in Livonia.
Born on Easter Sunday, March 31, 1929, in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of Neel and Maggie (Stauffer) Hedden. She moved to Michigan in 1937; in 1980 she began spending summers at her home on Lake Leelanau.
Vivian was a 1947 graduate of Melvindale High School where she served as class president. Her peers voted her most likely to become the first female president of the United States. A working mother, she received her bachelor's degree in education from Madonna University in 1980. She worked as a teacher in Redford and Livonia public schools.
She enjoyed teaching, camping, reading, gardening and traveling. Her special joy was summer entertaining at her Lake Leelanau cottage. Vivian was an active member of Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City, Nativity United Church of Christ in Livonia, Livonia Weekenders, the Michigan Education Association and Elderwise.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. A great communicator who loved people, she was well respected. Vivian was a gracious friend and hostess and will truly be missed.
Surviving are by her husband of 48 years, William of Traverse City and Livonia; two sons, William (Laurie) Bassett Jr. of Williamsburg and Jonathan (Cheryl) Bassett of Jackson; two brothers, Dean and Dale Hedden; and a sister, Lila Balint. Her grandchildren include Landon, Wesley, Patricia, Kaitlyn and Sarah Bassett.
A memorial service for Vivian will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass St., Traverse City. A luncheon will follow at the church's fellowship hall.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Vivian Bassett Scholarship Fund at Central United Methodist Church.
