Mrs. Rufus Bassett
Mrs. Lydia Bassett passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas Wabel Sr., in Henry, Ill., on March 27, 1919, after a lingering illness, due to a complication of diseases and old age.
Lydia Hand was born in Castle Creek, Boone county, New York, January 11, 1840, and came to Illinois in 1867. November 11, 1868 she was united in marriage to Rufus Bassett, who passed beyond in 1896. To this union two children were born ? Carrie Alice, now Mrs. Thomas Wabel, and George Herbert, who passed away in 1907. Besides the daughter, she leaves nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many friends to mourn her loss. She was the last of a family of four children.
In her girlhood she united with the M.E. church at Castle Creek, N.Y., and has since lived a consistent Christian life, being a very patient though great sufferer during the last illness. She had the noble traits of worthy womanhood and fulfilled the life duties devolving upon her well and faithfully.
For many years Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Bassett lived upon the farm in Whitefield township, eight miles west of Henry, near the Center church, but after Mr. Bassett?s death Mrs. Bassett purchased a cottage in Henry, which had been her home until the time of her death, though as her ailments became serious she was removed to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wabel, where she was cared for.
The funeral was held at the M.E. church on Saturday, March, 29, at 1:30, Rev. M.B. Van Leer, the pastor officiating. There was a goodly attendance of sympathizing friends at the services. The hymn, ?Abide With Me.,: and the old time sacred song, ?We?re Going Home to Die No More,? were sang by the choir. Beautiful, fragrant flower bouquets lay upon the casket. Interment in Whitefield Center cemetery beside the husband, gone before.
The pall bearers were David Blackwell, Alex Brown, C.L. Clawson, William McAleer, W.R. Brokaw and John Reinbeck. A.B. Smith, mortician.
