Bass-Housman
Christian Cratus Bass ?Crate? as he was called was b. Aug. 23, 1878 near Fremont in McCracken Co., KY. He was the son of Archibald Washington Jr. and Elizabeth Houser Bass (see Bass). On the 14th of July 1896 in Graves CO. KY at her home he married Flora Thomas (Sib) Housman the daughter of William Erenst and Susan Virginia Lancashire Housman. Flora was b. Mr. 3, 1878 in Graves County.
Crate and Flora had seven children.
Edgar Cratus b. July 20, 1897 in McCracken Co., m May 29, 1920 at S. Fulton, TN to Ethel Wilkins, daughter of John Robertson and Eva Pearl Hodges Wilkins. The had two children, a daughter died as infant and Lola Elizabeth b. Feb. 25, 1923 m. Aug. 31, 1944 to Philip Armstrong; Violet Ruthers b. Nov. 16, 1900 in McCracken Co. d Mar. 11, 1987 in Memphis, TN, m Oct. 9, 1921 in McCracken Co. to Mark Edward Cline. They had had three children, Edward b. Dec. 11, 1922 in Paducah, m. Aug. 4, 1945 to Jean?, Raymond Bass b Dec. 8, 1924, m 1st Betty Joe Mays m. 2nd Frances ?, nad Martha Frances b. Dec. 13, 1930 m. 1st Calvin Allen m 2nd Ramlnd Eugene McMullen; William Johnson b. Feb. 4, 1903 in McCracken County d. Jan. 16, 1955 in Paducah m July 18, 1923 to Ruby Burkhart, daughter of James A. and Emma Burkhart. They had one sons James Cratus b May 1, 1925 m Aug. 14, 1946 to Margaret Yopp: Durward Bellmont b. Nov. 15, 1905 in McCracken County m. Sept. 13 1925 in So. Fulton TN to Birdie Mable Wilkins, daughter of John Roberrson and Eva Pearl Hodges Wilkins. (Mable and Ethel are sisters). They had one daughter Bettie Ann, b. Mar. 22, 1927 m Dec. 2, 1948 to John Dean Tate; Jennie Elizabeth b. Oct 19, 1913 in McCracken County m 1st Dec. 25, 1932 in McCracken County to Aubrey Grey Brown son of Euin Locke and Maggie Lee Stovall Brown m 2nd David Harmon son of ? and Lena Wyatt Harmon. Jennie and Aubrey Brown had one daughter Aubrey Jane Brown b Apr. 26, 1934 m 1st Aug. 28, 1957 to Harold Lee Mason, m 2nd June 8, 1963 to Arnold Truman DeJarnett. Jennie and David Harmon had two sons David Michael b. Aug. 13, 1947 m Aug. 8, 1981 to Donna C. Smith and Wayne Thomas b. Oct. 5, 1950 m December 1947 to Lynn Gillings; Helen Louise b. Feb. 18, 1915 in McCracken County m. Apr. 17, 1938 in South Fulton, TN to Charley Brooks Yahr, so nof Eddy Earl and Vera Mae Green Yahr. Helen and Brooks had three children, George Terry b. Sept. 21, 1939 in Graves Co. KY m Aprl. 13, 1962 to Sandra Sue Conley, Barbara Gay b July 22, 1942 Pine Bluff, AR m June 1, 1963 to Richard Lowell Couch, Connie Louise b May 21, 1955 in Lebanon, TN m Apr. 15, 1978 to William Geiger; CHaroltte Celia b July 5, 1916 in McCracken County m Dec. 29, 1935 in Metropolis, IL to Solon Smith, son of Emmitt and Lucy Davidson Smith. They had one son Raymond Jerry b. 1939 m 1st June Gossum and 2nd Pauline Butler Hayes m 3rd Karen ? 4th Ann Pierce Luker.
As a young man Crate was one of the first automobile salesmen in Paducah. He worked for Foreman?s Ford and Abell?s Chevrolet. He boufght a farm on the Old Mayfield Road near Fremont, enxt door to his fatgher?s and reaised dairy coews and horses. When Jennie, Helen and Charlotte were in high school at Reidland Crate drove the school bus. Before their marriage Flora taught school in Graves County.
Mr. Bass d Dec. 20, 1942 at his home and Mrs. Bass d Mar. 20, 1963 in Paducah. Mr. and Mrs. Bass are bvuried at Harmoney Baptist Church Cemetery in Graves County where they were active members. Submitted by Bettie B. Tate.
