Al Bassett
Melstone - Al Bassett, husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away November 1, 2009, at his home in Melstone, after a year long battle with cancer.
Al was born to Fred and Mary Bassett on March 19, 1940. He attended schools in Ingomar, Sumatra and Melstone, with some years having his own mother as his teacher.
He married Theresa Rostad on May 29, 1961, and they had two daughters. After working several different ranching jobs and also as a government trapper, they settled in Melstone, where Al started working in the oil field in 1966. He continued working in the oil field until the time of his death. He was the Justice of the Peace and Mayor of Melstone for several years. There was never a child in need that he was not willing to give a helping hand.
Al is survived by his wife of 48 years, Theresa; daughters Barb (Dean) Clark, Billie (Ryle) Harms; two brothers, Thad Bassett and Donnie Bassett; his grandson, Trevor Clark (Bronco), who shared his love for trapping, fishing and hunting; his granddaughter and angel, Chalee Harms, who shared his love for his horses.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mary Bassett.
Al believed that the great outdoors was his house of the Lord and that is why it has been decided to have a graveside memorial service at the Cabin Creek Cemetery, south of Melstone, on the Melstone/Custer Road on Thursday, November 5, at 11 a.m. A luncheon will be served at the Melstone Community Center following the service.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Montana Youth Trapper Camp, c/o Jim Buell, PO Box 133, Gilford, MT 59525; Melstone First Responders, Melstone, MT 59054; or the Larry Jordan Memorial Fund, c/o Northern Rodeo Association, PO Box 1122, Billings, MT 59103.
