NEW BEDFORD – Allan Bessette, 68, of New Bedford, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the husband of Joan F. (McHale) Bessette. They were married 48 years.
A lifelong resident of New Bedford, he was the son of the late William Bessette and Savaida (Brown) Forand Bessette. He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, where he was a collector.
He worked for Continental Screw Co. for 24 years and for Aerovox Corp. for 11 years until he retired.
Mr. Bessette was a military police officer with the Massachusetts Army National Guard for 35 years. He served in the 1st 221st Field Artillery Unit, 685th Military Police Company and 772nd Military Police Company; he retired in 1991 as a sergeant. He was activated during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his widow; a son, Leonard P. Bessette of New Bedford; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a brother of the late Fred, Warren and William Jr. Bessette and Russell Forand.
His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
