The deceased long played a prominent part in the civic life of Malone and was an outstanding figure for many years. After studying in Malone schools, he learned the trade of machinist and was for many years employed at his trade in the Hind’s Foundry on Catherine Street. He later was employed for a period of 18 yaers in the Rutland Railroad shops. After leaving there, he was employed in a similar capacity in the New York Central shops, continuing this employement until he reached the age of 70, when he was retired on pension. At that time his associates gave him a banquet, and many of the most prominent men in the village paid him honor. Mr. Bessette took a keen interest in public affairs and was instrumental in the organizing of the Citizens Party, which has been in power in Malone for many years. He served six times as a trustee and many times filled the mayor’s chair on the board when that official was absent. He was a talented musician and was a member of the Malone band for more than half a century, acting as its director for a number of years. He also taught music and directed the Notre Dame Church choir for a number of years. He played in various music circles for nearly 50 years. Mr. Bessette was prominent in fraternal organizations. He held membership in the Malone Council, Knights of Columbus, St. John the Baptist Society, Independent Order of Foresters and Modern Woodsmen of America. He filled various offices in these orders from time to time. He was married on Ocotber 17, 1881, to Louise Malette of Malone. Besides his widow, he leaves four daughters and four sons: Mrs. Joseph Hamilton, Mrs. Cassie Ste. Marie, Miss Blanche Bessette, Miss Gertrude Bessett, Louis J. Bessette, captain of Company I, 105th Infantry, Edgar L. Bessette and Raymond C. Bessette of Malone, and Clarence E. Bessette of Piercefield; two brothers, John of Hull, Que., and Alfred of Hartford, Conn., and one sister Mrs. Eixlda Dumontier of Hull, Que.
