    • According to George, his son, Samuel first went up to the copper mines at Calumet, Michigan, when he was twenty years old and was a stable boy for the mines. They had "Whim" horses. Then later he took a team up there and had a contract to draw timber for the mines. He could draw twelve loads of four-foot wood one mile in a day. In 1867 he took his bride, Dorinda, up there with him. Their first child was stillborn. They left the mines and came home where George was born in 1870. In 1876 when Beechwood was new, Samuel and Dorinda lived in it. At some time, Samuel acquired the eighty acre farm adjoning that is now known as the Tollgate Farm. He also had the eight acre farm across Twelve Mile road from the north 80. Samuel and Dorinda built their home in 1894 a year before his father, John died. After his wife died in 1911, Samuel lived there with his daughter, Edith. The 160 acres were divided equally among his four children after his death in 1922.
