William A. Bassett, Mankato, died Friday, May 12 of cancer. He was 84 years old. Bill was deeply affected by the decency and steadfastness of his parents. He was able to face and do hard things. Bill was city manager of Mankato for 28 years until 1996. Bill was born in Detroit, Michigan. He came to Mankato in 1968 with his first wife Barbara and their four children; Victoria (Chuck) Raymond, Marty (Katie), Elizabeth and Greg (Jana). He had seven grandchildren, Michael, Bill, Richard, Grace, Alexander, Anne and Thomas. Bill and Pam Year, his wife of thirty years, continued living in Mankato until their retirements, then wintering in Arizona. During his career and up until his illness, Bill continued to influence his profession. He served on the International City Managers Association, Board of Directors. He was an active volunteer and advocate for professional management in Minnesota cities. Bill taught graduate students during his retirement. He managed numerous cities in transition. He helped young managers and he volunteered with State associations. He was a trusted and principled advocate for Minnesota cities. Bill recently received an award from the Minnesota Association of City managers for a lifetime of service excellence. Bill always viewed his public service as a 'calling'. He had great reverence and love for the profession. Bill loved words. Literature enhanced and guided his life. He loved opera and classical music. He danced and laughed with those he loved. He cared deeply for his children and their families. He was a loyal and trusted friend to many. He is survived by his wife, Pamela Year, his children and grandchildren. Please gather with us in honor of Bill's life on Friday, May 19th between 3:00pm and 6:00pm at the Verizon Center, Ellerby Room, Mankato.
