Josephine E. Bass Mattison Mayer
Mrs. Josephine E. Bass Mattison Mayer, 97, wife of Peter Mayer, died last Thursday morning at 7 am, at the home of her son, George Mattison, near St. Lawrence. She was stricken Ill on Tuesday.
Mrs. Mayer was born October 31, 1844, a daughter of Charles and Maria Morse Bass, at Pillar Point. She attended school there and later graduated from the Sackets Harbor school. Following her graduation she taught school for many years on Grindstone Island until 1861. She was twice married. In 1862 she was married to Hiram Mattison, of Sanfords Corners, now Calcium, and for a year the couple resided at Clayton, where he was employed in the shipyards. In the summer of 1863, they went to Illinois, located about 50 miles from Chicago. After residing for 25 years in Illinois, the couple moved to Doland, So. Dakota. Mr. Mattison died there in 1896 of typhoid pneumonia. Following his death, Mrs. Mattison returned to the east and settled in Clayton. There she married Peter Mayer in February, 1905. Mr. Mayer died August 27, 1927, and since that time Mrs. Mayer had resided with her son, George Mattison near St.
Lawrence. Mrs. Mayer was active in the Grange and served for a number of years as lecturer. By her first marriage Mrs. Mayer had ten children, seven of whom, survive. Besides her son, George, they are Burton, Donna, Texas; Benjamin and William, of the state of Washington; Byron, of Syracuse; John,
Doland, S. D.; and Mrs. Ida Brown, of Quincy, Wash; also two brothers,
Cyrus Bass, of Clayton, and Lincoln Bass, of Adams. Funeral services were held from the home of her son, George, Sunday afternoon at 2, with Rev. William Eddy, pastor of the Clayton and St. Lawrence Methodist Churches Officiating.
