      Bernice Bassett Earle

GRETNA - Bernice Bassett Earle, 89, a retired bank clerk of Jacksonville, died Friday, July 25, 2003, in San Diego. A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. EDT Aug. 23 at Lakewood Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, with reception in church social hall following service. Memorial contributions may be made to Lakewood Presbyterian Church, 2001 University Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32217. She was formerly of Gretna and Jacksonville. She was born on Feb. 10, 1914, and was the great-granddaughter and granddaughter of Confederate veterans Capt. George Washington Bassett Sr. and George Washington Bassett Jr. of Finnegan's Florida Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. She was the daughter of Robert H.M. Bassett and Carrie V. Chester and raised by her aunts, Betty Bassett Mosley and Mortimer Bassett. She descended from original American land-grant tobacco-farming families in Gadsden County, living in rural housing without running water, indoor toilets or electricity until her late 20s. During World War II she worked as a bookkeeper for the railroad. She met her future husband, Harold George Earle - war time Air Force navigator and civilian pharmacist - at a USO dance in Panaba City. After marriage in 1945, they moved to Jacksonville. In 1968 two months after her husband died, she returned to the workforce, after a 25-year hiatus, at the American National Bank, which became SouthTruts. She continued to work full time every day until she was 79 and retired in 1993. In September 2000 she sold her Jacksonville residence of 54 years to be closer to her grandchildren. She really enjoyed her family and friends, gardneing, dogs, cats, walks and a good pound of boiled Florida shrimp. She is survived by a daughter, Susan Peinado of San Diego; two grandchildren, Susana Peinado and Philip Peinado, both of San Diego; two cousins, Gertrude Johnson Young of Gretna and William T. Bailey of Jacksonville; two sisters-in-law, Mary Bassett (widow of Ted) of Cottondale and Jean Bassett (widow of Herb) of El Paso, Texas.
