Grace Kathren Decker Hignite Bass
Grace Kathern Decker Hignite Bass 91, Indianapolis, died Sunday, October 29, 2006. She was born to Polie and Sallie (nee Alexander) Decker in a small town in Kentucky and never lost her love for the outdoors and fishing and camping with her family and their families.
She is the last of seven children borne to Sally and Polie Decker. She and her late husband were volunteers at the Richard L. Roudebush VAMC for over forty years. Always active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary she was a Past President of Hoosier Post 624 and Lawrence Post 261 Ladies Auxiliaries; Past President, 11th District Ladies Auxiliary; Past Grand President of the Military Order of the Cooties; Past 7th Supreme President of the MOCA; and Past Hoosier #1 MOCA Auxiliary President. Her care and concern for the patients in our veterans' hospitals and nursing home was always one of her great loves and passion.
She was an avid Scrabble player as all her children and grandchildren have learned well. She loved playing penny ante poker, solitaire or any card game with anyone if it made him or her happy and would provide a small amount of happiness in their world. Crossword puzzle master number one, there wasn't one she couldn't finish in her prime and none she wouldn't tackle. Her smile, her laugh, her singing (when you could talk her into it), her ever sharp wit, her straight to the point way of looking at life, will be missed by all her family.
Both her husbands, Raymond Hignite and Charles R. "Pop" Bass, and two sons, Douglas and Billy, preceded her in death.
She leaves behind her children, Dennis and Richard Hignite, Sandra White, and Charles A. "Bud" Bass; 25 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and 10 great great grandchildren. She also leaves behind nephew, nieces, cousins and countless friends from Veterans of Foreign Wars and Sisters from the Ladies Auxiliaries.
She will be laid to rest next to her very special veteran "Pop" in Washington Park East Cemetery.
