Dorsey Bass
Dorsey Machir Bass, 87, of Columbia died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at his home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at First Christian Church, 101 N. Tenth St., with the Revs. John Yonker and Fred Thayer officiating. Burial will be in Columbia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Mr. Bass was born Jan. 30, 1915, in Columbia to Andrew J. and Mary Machir Dorsey Bass.
He married Bettina Fitts Hinton on Dec. 14, 1947, and she survives.
He graduated from Hickman High School and the University of Missouri-Columbia.
He was a captain in the Army Air Forces and a pilot during World War II in the China/Burma theater.
He owned and operated Woodside Farm south of Columbia as well as other farms since 1947. He was a city councilman of the Third Ward of Columbia in 1962.
He was a member of First Christian Church and the Downtown Rotary Club. He was vice president of the American National Cattleman's Association.
Survivors also include four daughters, Nancy Hinton Bass of Columbia, Betty Bass Hall of Atlanta, Martha Bass Abernathy of Raleigh, N.C., and Sarah Bass Witkowski of Austin, Texas; a son, Dorsey Bass Jr., of Palo Alto, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
