Alfred J. Bessette Jr. (Charlestown)
ALFRED J. BESSETTE Jr., 78, of Thomas Street, who operated Bessette Hardware Stores in Pawtucket and Lincoln with his brothers before retiring, died yesterday at home. He was the husband of Margaret M. (O'Rourke) Bessette.
Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late Alfred J. and Mary (Cavanagh) Bessette, he lived in Riverside and Lincoln before moving to Charlestown.
He previously worked for the New Haven Railroad for 19 years.
He was a graduate of Bryant College. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a past president of the Lincoln Lions Club and former member of the FOPA of Lincoln.
Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Stephen M. Bessette of Charlestown, William J. Bessette of Lincoln, Peter A. Bessette of Granite Bay, Calif. and Christopher P. Bessette of San Francisco; eight daughters, Mary Ellen Krochmal of Cumberland, Anne M. Landry and Margaret S. Muksian, both of Lincoln, Elizabeth J. Bessette of Newport, Barbara J. Mello of Portsmouth, Jacqueline Bessette and Deborah J. Bessette, both of Wickford, and Linda F. Bessette Branch of Bristol; five brothers, John Bessette of Cumberland, Philip Bessette of Warwick, William R. Bessette of Lincoln, and Gilbert and Paul Bessette, both of Pawtucket; a sister, Virginia Fortin of Cumberland; 24 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. He was father of the late A. Joseph Bessette III and John F. Bessette.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. in St. Jude Church, Front Street, Lincoln. Burial with military honors will be in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
