John Anthony Bass
John Anthony Bass, 70, son of Eben and Helen (Woodman) Bass, passed away at home with his family at his side on September 15, 2008, a beautiful late summer New England day. He is survived by his partner, Doris Cottrell, of Mansfield; his three sons, John; Adam, and his wife Lynne; Michael, his wife Cindy, and their children Kimberly and Nicholas; and his adopted son, Jeffrey, his wife Lori, and their daughter Jessica. His first wife, Lois Gilbransen, stepdaughters Jennifer, Abby, and Amanda, his brothers Stephen, William, and David, and sisters Clare and Anne, also survive him. John's second wife, Sally, and brothers Eben and Harold predeceased him. John was born and raised in Scotland, CT, and worked on the family farm until his retirement in 1984. During those years he was a town selectman, a member of Hampton Community Players and the Scotland Congregational Church choir, and a little league coach. He then became the winemaster of a Connecticut winery and traveled, experiencing places around the world. For several years, he lived and worked a simple farm in the mountains of Costa Rica, growing bananas and coffee. He enjoyed many friendships in his life, and saw his beloved Red Sox win the pennant twice.
Family and friends will hold a private celebration of his life this weekend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in John's name to The Hospice of Eastern Connecticut, 34 Ledgebrook Drive, Mansfield Center, CT, 06250.
