    • Most likely the John Bassett who was transported to Western Australia on board the Racehorse that arrived in Western Australia in 1865.
      John Bassett, John James and Thomas Bugg escaped and absconded from a road working gang upon Green Mount Hill, whereupon they found and took up with Moondyne Joe (Joseph Bolitho Johns), a Western Australia bush ranger. On 27 Aug 1866, John Bassett was captured and taken back to Fremantle prison where he was kept in solitary confinement on bread and water until the capture of Johns and companions in October of the same year. He was eventually set free in April 1872.
      John Bassett, aged 20 years, in Birmingham, convicted of shop breaking on 30 Dec 1863. He was listed as a grinder by occupation, had brown hair, oval face and stood 5 feet 3-1/4 inch tall with a sallow complexion, single, no children, but he was marked on the right arm with the name Emma Bassett.

      Racehorse - arrived in Western Australia in 1865
      This 1077 ton ship was built in Jersey in 1853. It was employed as a convict transport for Western Australia and left Portland, England on 26 May 1865 bound for the Swan River Colony. She carried the thirty second of 37 shipments of male convicts destined for Western Australia. The voyage took 76 days and the Racehorse arrived in Fremantle on 10 Aug 1865 with 172 passengers and 278 convicts.
