George Bassett Dies In Capital
Former Teacher and Policeman Here Is Victim of Heart Attack
George W. Bassett, 73, former well-known local resident, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William P. Butler, 2916 Parke avenue in Indianapolis, following a short illness of heart disease.
Mr. Bassett, a nephew of W.C. Duncan and Mrs. M.W. Young of this city, left Columbus in 1914 going to Indianapolis where he became part owner of the Union Labor News. For approximately 20 years he had been a publisher. Besides the labor paper he also published labor periodicals.
Before leaving here for Indianapolis Mr. Bassett worked for a number of years as a merchant policeman in the city, and also as an accountant. Prior to that he taught school both in Bartholomew and Brown counties.
Funeral Saturday
Survivors are two sons, Lowell H. Bassett and William R. Bassett, and two daughters, Mrs. Butler and Mrs. Clarence H. King, all of Indianapolis; three brothers, Harry W. Bassett of Washington, and Walter M. Bassett and Homer D. Bassett, of Indianapolis; a sisters Mrs. Blanche Anderegg of Indianapolis; two uncles, Mr. Duncan of Columbus and Dr. M.A. Duncan, of Kansas, and two aunts, Mrs. Young, of Columbus, and Miss Ella Duncan, of Florida.
His wife, who was Laura Minor of Nashville before their marriage, died about ten years ago. She was a sister of Mrs. Ella Durnal, of Columbus, and Mrs. Jennie Allison of Nashville.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o?clock Saturday afternoon at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Butler. Dr. Charles Drake Skinner, pastor of the Central Avenue M.E. church in Indianapolis, will officiate. Burial will be made in Crown Hill cemetery.
